Hey guys. My sister is going into the hospital today to have 2 toes amputated. She's had a bad infection for a while now and been treated with a few courses of antibiotics but they haven't cleared it and her doctor is concerned that if the toes are not removed, the infection will spread to the bone and then it becomes very dangerous. So, she is going to be in the hospital for 2 weeks, and off her feet entirely for at least the first week of that.
I want to order some books for her that my stepdad (who lives near her) can take to her, but I am not sure what to buy. And, there's no good bookstore here where I'm staying where I can go and just browse, to get some ideas for titles. Her taste in books is generally different to mine - she tends to like things involving the supernatural - ghost stories, hauntings, ESP, mysteries, that kind of thing. Nothing really too heavy or, say 'intellectually rigorous' - she has some learning disabilities and although she can certainly read "normal" novels, anything really challenging isn't going to be especially enjoyable for her.
Any ideas?

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
It's a vampire romance novel, and it's completely addicting.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=h6QuJZffgHYC&dq=alchemist&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=-8DNkDbaDs&sig=W8255hKM925d93aOeD6mf2lGlLc#PPA11,M1)
it's an easy read, and very inspiring in a beautifully simple way.

Lawrence Block wrote some good Burglar books -- mysteries -- and the Whoopi Goldberg movie shouldn't put anyone off of them.
Try The Burglar Who Studied Spinoza or The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian.

A couple light and uplifting reads that I have enjoyed a few times =)
Jonathon Livingston Seagull - Richard Bach
Celestine Prophecy - James Redfield
I Hope her surgery is painless and she heals up quick!

I really enjoyed Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. She's quite unputdownable and that title is a kind of mystery. I'm reading another of hers at the moment, called One Good Turn, which is so far proving to be another good read.
I hope your sister recovers well from the operation. It sounds rough :(

Is she the woman who wrote Behind the Scenes at the Museum? I seem to recall reading that a few years ago and that I enjoyed it.

Sorry to hear about your sister!
Is Anne Rice too normal? Or Patrick Süskind's Perfume?
I totally enjoyed Audrey Niffenegger's Timetravellers wife.
And of course when you have loads of time on your hands you should read the Hitchhikers guide to galaxy, the trilogy, all five or six of them...
well it's supernatural... ;)
