Are people overreacting towards and Absolute Vodka Ad depicting a pre-1848 map that shows California, Arizona and other U.S. states as Mexican territory?
US citizens are pretty pissed off, but the ad was never meant to be used in US markets.

is this overreaction or did the advertisers do it on purpose, knowing it would be controversial, thus calling attention to the ad?

Absolut vodka pulls ad showing California in Mexico

Mon Apr 7, 9:36 PM ET

The distillers of Sweden's Absolut vodka have withdrawn an advertisement run in Mexico that angered many U.S. citizens by idealizing an early 19th century map showing chunks of the United States as Mexican.

The billboard ad has the slogan "In an Absolut World" slapped over a pre-1848 map showing California, Arizona and other U.S. states as Mexican territory. Those states were carved out of what had been Mexican lands until that year.

Although it was not shown in the United States, U.S. media outlets picked up on the ad, and after a barrage of complaints, Absolut's maker said on Sunday the ad campaign would cease.

Defending the campaign last week, Absolut maker Vin & Spirit said the ad was created "with a Mexican sensibility" and was not meant for the U.S. market.

"In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," a spokeswoman wrote on Absolut's Web site.

"Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal," she wrote.

Absolut's blog cite has received more than a thousand comments since the ad campaign was launched a few weeks ago, with many calling for boycotts of the Swedish company.

"I have poured the remainder of my Absolut bottles down the sink," one blogger wrote.

A war between Mexico and the United States from 1846 to 1848 started with Mexico's refusal to recognize the U.S. annexation of Texas and ended with the occupation of Mexico City by U.S. troops.

At the end, Mexico ceded nearly half of its territory to the United States, forming the states of California, Nevada, Utah and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Mexicans remain sensitive about the loss and the location of the border. At the same time, the United States is fortifying barriers to keep out undocumented Mexican migrants.

Some Mexicans use the term "Reconquista" (reconquest) to refer to the growing presence in California of Mexican migrants and their descendants.

France's Pernod Ricard is taking over Absolut vodka, one of the world's top-selling spirit brands, after buying Vin & Spirit from the Swedish government at the end of March.

Yeah I have to admit I read an article about this earlier today and I had to read it like three times because I kept felt like I was missing something, because I couldn't work out what exactly it is that people were upset about.

TBH I still haven't figured it out but I give up.

I believe it to be connected to the wave of anti-imigrant sentiment in the U.S...be they legal or otherwise, that political pundit's and so called journalist's espouse...you know your Sean Hannity's,Tucker Carlson's,Glen Beck's and Lou Dobbs...(n)...it's a little bit like this tool in the city of "brotherly" love...

yeah it's like they think if we remind the Mexicans that most of the western half of the US was once their property they'll start jumping the border in droves. and many Americans already think theres is a problem with immigration so I guess that's part of it.

I can't stand by the argument that mexicans take jobs away from Americans, because as far as I'm concerned they are willing to do alot of jobs that american straight up don't WANT to do, no matter how poor they are.

My personal opinion about where the resentment of immigrant came from in the land that is suppose to be a melting pot of cultures is this...back when my great grandmother came here from France, the majority of immigrants wanted to be americans and they wanted to learn english...but now Immigrants want to have american rights but they don't nessarily want to learn english or become citizens, they'd rather preserve thier own language and culture and this makes some people very upset. why should we cater to them when they decided to come here?

what any of that crap really has to do with a stupid old map used in a vodka ad, I'm not really sure. it just struck a cord with some very red white and blue vodka drinkers I guess.

obviously if they drank a little more vodka they'd be drunk enough that borders wouldn't matter to them anyhow. I think that might have been the point of the ad. heh.

^yeah, that's usually the kinda crap their ad department does. the ad as it stands doesn't really make much sense in comparision with their other campaigns.

I think Absolut should make an ad set in the 16th century, with some african slaves brewing the vodka and having a drink with some Indians.
Let's see how Americans feel about that.

I think if there was a picture of a 'wealthy american' in chains in the background doing tough and dirty labour and being abused, that they'd at least get a smirk out of it.
