I haven't read anything that they will be charging for multiplayer. Isn't that what X-box gold is for?
that's what i thought, but dead space 2 charges extra for it. and i rented battlefield 3, and you had to either pay a one-time $10 fee for multiplayer access, or redeem the code that came with your new copy of the game (so renters and used-copy buyers get fucked)
and i mean, it's battlefield, that's a game that you play for the multiplayer. i just wanted to try it out, but i wasn't paying $10 for it

You do have to pay for Xbox LIVE but no extra cost for multiplayer if you buy the game new. If you rent or buy the game used, then yes, you have to pay to get a code to access multiplayer.
Multiplayer is fun but not at all necessary to the game.
Explanation from BioWare:
Your ending(s) are determined by your "Effective Military Strength" (let's call it EMS for now) bar. Focus on that bar - that is your indicator of how well you will do in the end-game.
You can maximize your EMS just by collecting War Assets in the single-player game. There is a certain threshhold of these you would need to exceed (I can't get too specific) but I can tell you there are MORE than the required amount that can be gathered in the single-player campaign.
"Galactic Readiness" is a modifier you can improve by playing multiplayer. That is to say, if you play a lot of multiplayer, you will need less War Assets from single-player to fill up your EMS bar (ie it will balance out the requirements to account for you playing in both modes). Single-player game play does not impact that bar.
EMS = success. EMS can be maximized via collecting war assets alone, even if your Galactic Readiness is 50%.

Also, I forget what I said in my last post in this thread but I played Saints Row: The Third, Skyrim (still have to get through more of it), then Mass Effect 3.
I got very lucky with these games. Each one is great.
Despite the uproar over the ending(s) in Mass Effect 3 - and no spoilers of course - I really liked it myself. Though I understand the arguments against it, and some of those arguments I even thought of, I decided to overlook them just to enjoy the experience.
Kind of glad I like the ending anyway because here I am, all happy while others seem to be seriously stewing so hard over it.
*keeps on rocking N7 hoody like it ain't no thang*
yeah, i played the game pretty religiously since day 1 and i beat it already (it is pleasingly long). i am kind of curious what effect my war score actually had on the ending...i'm gonna do another run where i beeline through the plot collecting as few assets as possible and see what happens
multiplayer seems neat, if a little simple, but unfortunately i seem to have the worst luck with xbox live and can never seem to stay in multiplayer matches for very long without getting disconnected. i think it has something to do with NAT ports something something i'll figure it out some day

It's something you have to experience for yourself.
For your PS3; Heavy Rain, Little Big planet (1 or 2), Modnation racers, Killzone 2 + 3, Dark Souls, Darksiders, Infamous 1 +2, God of War III and the HD collections, Metal gear solid 4, The Orange box, Gran Turismo 5, the Resistance trilogy, Batman arkham asylum and city, Burnout Paradise, Borderlands, Skyrim, Dead Space 1+2, Vanquish, BioShock 1+2, Grand Theft Auto IV, Saints row 3, Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Mass Effect 2.
No stinkers at all in there and most you'll find pretty cheap (y)
sweet, thanks. i'm working through the bioshocks, now, then on to the portals. i've heard good things about little big planet, so that's probably next. red dead was good from the little i've played before/seen, so i'll have to get that (plus, deadwood was badass). i played the bad companies, and they were sick. farcry 2 was awesome, and that new one will be sick, i imagine. i want to check out the operation flashpoints, and battlefield 3 (i'm no longer going to hold out and wait to do them on computer). video games are awesome.

I finished Xenogears finally after initially buying it in 1998. Took me long enough, but I finally sat down and finished it. Quite easy this time. My first run, I got to the second to final boss and could never beat him.
That is the extent of my video gaming. I don't have much time for it. Though, I occasionally play Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds.
I didn't know you enjoyed playing turn-based RPGs. Xenogears is one of my favorite JRPGs.
Check out my friend's Xenogears hip-hop concept album:

Well, I've been playing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. I'm at the final dungeon. I'm about to fight the final boss.

Anyone play Terraria?
i've been playing max payne 3. this is just a plain old cool game. it's like die hard fucked breaking bad and the baby was a video game. it's cheesy in a lot of ways, but just plain fun, like playing an action movie.
i will say this though--it's super hard to play when you're trying not to drink. max sure likes to drink. even the opening menu is just him drinking whiskey until you start the game.

it's like die hard fucked breaking bad and the baby was a video game.Max Payne is essentially John Woo meets the Matrix (yes, that's an actual exert on the back of MP1's box/case); Remedy unabashedly enjoys showcasing it's pop culture references (even vocally citing Lost, Stephen King, and Twin Peaks when promoting Alan Wake) and and you can see Rockstar Vancouver carried that through to this sequel.

I have been playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 like an absolute motherfucker. Absolute. It's just as addictive now as when it was released 5 decades ago.
the civ 5 expansion has made the game a lot more fun, i've been pretty hooked on it lately
i also finally got around to buying starcraft 2. i'm too afraid to touch multiplayer because by now everyone's presumably such a pro but the singleplayer campaign is really masterfully put together, i'm pretty blown away by it. a little disapponting that there's no zerg or major protoss element to it, but it's not a huge thing, because they did such a great job with the terran story.

It has been a weird gaming year for me so far, the arrival of baby number 3 has meant very little time for console gaming. I am playing through Infamous 2, which after Skyrim and Zelda:Skyward Sword is only my third home console game this year.
I have a long commute though so I am doing lots mobile gaming, loving the Vita, 3DS still cool (especially Resident Evil) and quite a bit of IOS gaming

I'm way behind on games. This summer was crazy busy. But I have played the newest Mass Effect 3 DLC - Leviathan. I dug it but I was already in the "I like the ending" camp so, take that as you will. Also if you feel the same way or you just can't understand why anyone would like the ending, click here (http://badassdigest.com/2012/08/17/film-crit-hulk-smash-a-few-more-words-on-the-column-about-the-ending-of-mas/).
I did keep up with The Walking Dead: The Game and holy shit guys. You have to play it. It's not your typical shooter. It's definitely reminiscent of point and click with a little bit of shooting. It's great though. They really follow the same kind of vibe and examination of what survivors do in crisis, just like in the books. I had to pause the game and pick my jaw up from the floor with the latest episode. Episodes 1-3 are out already but I recommend just getting the season pass.
I watched my man play Arkham Asylum and I played it a bit too on his PS3 but I wanted to play the entire thing myself, so I picked up the GOTY edition on sale and so I'm doing that now. I'm too broke to buy newer stuff at the moment so I'm going back to "older" stuff.
Super interested in Sleeping Dogs though. Maybe a year from now when it's $20. :p

i keep hearing about how amazing this game is...would you recommend it to someone who's never seen the show or read the books? or is it something that i could enjoy with no knowledge whatsoever about the background of any of the characters or anything?
and follow-up; would the game spoil anything about the show? i keep meaning to watch it eventually, but lately, i only ever seem to watch TV shows when i'm eating, and i don't like to watch gory stuff or zombie stuff while i'm trying to eat (it's why i stopped following true blood--but i made an exception for game of thrones). i'll do it eventually though! probably!
edit: nm, i just went and bought it anyway. you're right, it's really good. even if i have already come across one point of classic "what do you mean i can't do that???" adventure game syndrome...i just wanted to use the cane to get the brick...would totally work in real life...

Very, very true. I used to worship them as a kid.
wow. the walking dead is really amazing. everyone who hyped it to me was actually underselling it, if anything.
it's basically a point-and-click adventure with a genuinely gripping story, you can really get invested in the characters and the conflicts. the combat sequences, when they do come up, are usually point-and-click affairs (with the occasional button-mashing) but they do a good job of making them really tense.
the story is super-dark, it's pretty incredible. the choices that they make you...make actually feel genuinely difficult (especially since most of them are on a timer, so you don't have to time to list out pros and cons, you gotta choose fast)
i just finished episode 2. it's...it's quite a thing so far.
and if anyone's hearing "point and click adventure" and having flashbacks of pixel-hunting for items that you'll to beat the game later, and if you miss it now you can't go back and get it so you have to start the game over, or of obscure puzzles where you have to stick tape to a fence to steal cat hair to make a fake mustache to use a fake id or whatever, don't worry. the puzzles have all been very logical so far, and the game's standard difficulty actually outright shows you all the things in the environment that you can interact with, so you don't have to pixel hunt to look for bricks or coins or whatever.
you can turn that off, if you like, but the focus of the game is really on the story-telling and the intense character interactions and group dynamics, the puzzles never stand in the way of that.
you guys
the new x-com game is incredible
play it please

Dishonored was excellent in lots of ways. The Hitman-esque freedom of approach combined with some RPG-ish elements in terms of the magic powers and shit meant that you could end up in hundreds of cool unique situations on each level (eg rewiring a wall of electricity to harm your foes then using the force-push to knock your target back into it just as he draws his weapon), however it was just too short. There's almost zero replay value, thanks to the developers deciding you weren't allowed to carry over all the powers you've spent the entire game earning into Mission Select. That genuinely pissed me off. Rented it for 5 nights, only needed 3. A great game but far too short.

Bought and loving it. Not sure I want to try the new XCOM though. So many precious memories could be erased in an instant - the early series basically constitutes a third of my top ten games of all time. It couldn't possibly live up to my expectations no matter how good it is.

it's seriously really, really good. basically everybody who loved the original loves this too. they kept in all the cool stuff that made x-com so great (the difficulty, the sense of loss, the organic progression through the game through artifact recovery & research), and stripped away all the little aggravating things that kept the game from its full potential (trying to measure out your units' capabilities through an arbitrary allotment of "time units", having to command like 14 individual dudes every turn, having to worry away your budget buying ammo and building storage facilities for all your ammo that you bought, an opaque global panic system, etc)
plus they added in some new features that fit in really well, like a cover system that feels almost perfectly implemented, class systems for your units to give them more personality (and increase your attachment to them so you feel worse when you get your vets killed), and...it's just a really, really well done game, it's hard to find anybody with anything bad to say about it (except for exceptionally stubborn nerds who jack off to spreadsheets and want annoying things like time units back)
the lead developer, jake solomon, is a massive x-com nerd too, so he and his team really approached the game with the love and attention it deserved. if you read interviews or watch them on youtube, he comes off as this really cool guy and it just makes the game even more fun somehow. they definitely sat down, thought long and hard about what made x-com so special, and thought even longer and harder about how to make the original game's soul shine even harder, and you feel it when you play
basically what i'm saying is that you should definitely be using your love of x-com as a reason to buy the game, not as a reason to not buy the game, you're seriously missing out
here's an hour long video of jake and two other devs playing the game, to give you a sense of what it's like and why it rocks (you dont have to watch the whole thing, just jump around) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VP4YmExQAE
(i really want people to play this game)

there is, yeah. it's...it's a good demo in that it gives you a sense of what the game is like and whether or not you're going to like the full version, but it's a bad demo in the sense that it's really really short and one of the (two) missions is a heavily scripted tutorial that tells you exactly where to move at every turn
having said that, playing the second mission, the one where you can do shit, made me say "yep, i like this, i'm buying it". you don't get to see any of the geoscape or base management stuff really so you're just going to have to trust me that that's fun too

Assassin's Creed 3, thoughts?
i loved it, like all of the series but i wish i hired it out instead of buying it. It's a really good mix of some features that have stayed the same and some that have changed. i hated playing as Haytham tho, posh twat.
people on the internet are just railing on the game for its flaws, and i'll admit, it has some (bugs, an unremarkable protagonist, a plot/writing that's not quite consistent, a crafting system that's more or less utterly pointless because none of the dozens of things that you can build are more worthwhile than the beaver pelts that you can get at the beginning of the game), but i don't quite get the hate. the good far outweighs the bad in my opinion, i think it's a hell of a game, easily as fun as any other in the series.
it probably helps that i live in boston for real life and am kind of a big fan of the age of rifles/sail in general. i admit i got a semi once i found out there was naval combat in the game (i'm relieved it's so well done, though i wish there were more boarding actions, or that i got the version of the game that let you wear the sea captain outfit on land)
i liked playing as haytham personally--playing as a gentlemanly british aristocratic type with a sword & pistol was neat. kind of came close to my original hopes before anything about the game was announced that it would be set in victorian england

Will i like bioshock infinite?
i thought bioshock infinite was amazing. one fear i had going in was that it was going to be like the first bioshock; a cool setting/story, but a sort of blah game that wasn't terribly fun to replay once you were done with it.
not the case! the game is fun as hell, in addition to looking beautiful and having a really good story (which you should avoid spoiling for yourself).

I know it's old but I just finished "Need for Speed, The Run" That game was badass with a great soundtrack.
Now I have to return to "The Last of Us". Really good game if you like the zombie type thing. It differs from most though in that you don't just go around shooting at everything. You have to same your ammo and be stealth a lot at times. Graphics are amazing
I'm at chapter 8 or so in Final Fantasy XIII. The characters and writing are terrible, and there's zero exploration. It's nonstop corridors throughout the game, and also nonstop cutscenes. It opens up later on once you get to Gran Pulse. I'm not there yet.
I finished the first episode of The Tyranny of King Washington, the Assassin's Creed III DLC. I like it so far. It takes place on an alternate reality timeline where after defeating the British, George Washington finds the golden apple and transforms into a brutal dictator. He declares himself king and strips away the freedom of the colonists who were fighting for that very ideal. Conner has no idea what happened. He suddenly wakes up to find his mother standing before him, and he has no idea what happened after the events of ACIII. In the alternate timeline, he never became an assassin or joined the order, so the only abilities he has are these newly-learned Native American spiritual powers which enable him to control wolf spirits. He can become invisible for a limited time, and also summon the wolf spirits to attack nearby enemies.

Well here is the thing. They only reason that Origins exists is because Rocksteady was working on the next gen one and WB didn't want to have that long of a gap, so they hired another studio to make a filler. I haven't played it yet but it seems like they did at least a decent job.
The new one looks great. It kinda makes me want to get a PS4, and I really wasn't planning on it. Arkham Knight could be the last one Rocksteady does though, so that means that WB will continue the franchise without them, which could be dangerous quality-wise.
I feel like Arkham Knight is going to be the Batman game we've all been waiting for. They tested what they could do with Asylum (keeping it on one island was a genius move development-wise), expanded if they could do a more open world with City (while still containing it) and now all that foundation building leads to the new one.
FF XIII was straight-up horrible. My husband tried so hard to finish it and just couldn't power through it, and he loved previous FF games. Just a terrible game.
I just got to Gran Pulse. Just the fact that I'm able to explore an open field makes a world's difference. I don't feel I'm being grabbed by the arm to hurry along with the story all the time. It's cool how they show the monsters running around and hunting each other, like being in the wild. All in all, it's definitely one of the weakest FF games. I heard FFXIII-2 is better, and Lightning Returns: FFXIII looks pretty nice.
Also, AC IV is wayyyyy better than III (y)
ACIV's appeal is the ship sailing and I don't much care for that. I still think ACII is the best.

In anticipation of the Star Citizen dogfighting module I've been playing the original Wing Commander games. They're still a lot of fun. Quite impressive for their time.

I just recently got a new machine, actually. the specs are...this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229285
i'm pretty happy with it; i'm finally able to use antialiasing and run games with shadows!
as far as whether PC gaming is good, that's a rather large question but i'd say definitely yes! there's lots of pc-exclusive games out there.
pc gaming is definitely great if you're into niche stuff, steam (and non-steam sources as well) gets lots of cool indie stuff that doesn't really make it to xbox. I know xbox has live arcade and an indie games library, but i've never really been impressed with the stuff on there in the way that you find cool stuff on PC.
i'd throw out papers, please (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QP5X6fcukM) as an example of the kind of cool stuff that people make and release on PC, simply because all it takes is the ability to do so...i feel like consoles make you jump through more hoops
and if you're into strategy games at all, there's really no other way to play them than on PC. every now and then some make their way over to consoles, but the ports are usually not great; you need a mouse for that kind of thing.
if you only ever play the big budget titles (assassin's creed, call of duty, mass effect, and so on) then you probably don't need a PC but there's definitely cool shit out there.
you can actually browse steam on your...browser if you want to take a look at the kind of stuff that's on it. http://store.steampowered.com/

Bob - did you play Gunpoint? I really wanted to try that game but I'm stuck on Macs.

right? newegg rules
i did play gunpoint waus, for a bit. i liked it, then got slightly stuck on a puzzle, and played something else, then i got sucked into a steam sale hole and i haven't really got back to it
that's another thing about steam, they have so many damn sales. i have so many fucking games that i can't even remember what half of them are now, i just bought them because they were like 75% off and i said "well i'm never going to see that price again, better get it just in case"
gunpoint was one of those games. i'm not huge on puzzle games honestly, but i liked what i played of it!

Couple games I've been playing lately:
Terraria: 2d mining/exploration game, I've got almost 400 hours in it. Addictive.
Starbound: very similar to terraria but more depth and you explore a near infinite universe of galaxies and solar systems.
Mass Effect: It's a lot of fun and the woman who voices Shepard is extremely talented.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: I prefer Skyrim because the leveling system is busted in this game but whatever, it's still Elder Scrolls and I'm saving my money for the new game.
