Oh totally. In fact (also spoilerish)I didn't realize how much it would matter so I'd go back and forth between renegade and paragon, but stayed mostly paragon. But not enough because once Miranda and Jack had their little tiff, I sided with Jack as the Paragon/Renegade options weren't available. I then spent the rest of the game hardcore trying to get as many Paragon points as I could to gain Miranda's loyalty back. By wasting time doing that all the crew were killed sans the Doctor at the end. I never did quite get enough Paragon to win back Miranda's loyalty either :( so of course, Miranda died.
I was kind of mad but at the same time it's pretty neat that the game is that smart.
don't beat yourself up over not being paragony/renegady enough to keep both of the characters' loyalty, those parts are weird and randomly difficult. in my last playthrough, i was playing as an imported ME1 character and i wasn't able to intimidate either legion or tali into staying loyal despite having literally a 100% renegade score. i sided with legion and went to talk to tali later and the option was still grayed out, there was literally nothing i could do about it. i think that the longer you wait, the harder the persuasion check is, and i guess it can go over 100? i really have no idea what that was about but it was very annoying because i was going for the no man left behind achievement (more because i want everyone alive for ME3 than for the achievement itself) and i had to retry the final mission three times before i finally figured out how to beat it without getting tali killed. but i did it!

Just beat God of War III. What an epic game. Dumb as fuck action but on a massively grandiose scale.
Imagine a tiny pimple on your body twatting you about and you'll pretty much have the correct scale of Kratos beating the shit out of the titans IN REAL TIME!
ugghhhh i wish that game weren't ps3 exclusive, i wanted to play it so badly
so i have a theory about how the story ends, and i just want you to answer yes or no (or maybe "kind of" if that seems applicable) without spoiling it for me: does the game end with you killing almost all of the olympus gods and the titans, leaving only zeus alive, creating a situation where zeus is the monotheistic "god" and kratos is the devil?
because there were things in gods of war 1 and 2 that kind of hinted that the story might take that turn, and by the end of god of war 2 you look downright demonic with your immolation thing
I doubt it would be possible on the xbox. It's like some 'whole other level shit' going on...
Right to answer your questions; SPOILERS BELOW!!!!
Titans and gods: Yes.
Monotheistic: Yes, as if Kratos passed the power to the heavens, maybe symbolising the birth or the Christian 'one god'.
Kratos: Devil no, Martyr Yes.
ugh i wish i could steal a ps3 or something, that sounds cool
I've been playing the demo for just cause 2 a lot. Especially since I seen this time limit hack/trick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOEdDX-RD08).
I might pick up the limited edition of Amazon. Mainly because it comes with a HOVER CRAFT dlc.

Things to do in May.
-Get your self a revolver and a rifle
-Steal a horse
-find a yourself a room at the saloon
-get to the sheriff's office and get the bounty
-go on a rampaging quest across the Mexican borders.
-liquor bomb the gang's hide out
-steal some gear and money
-escape from the fortress
-twist the neck of a prison guard
-get into mayor's office
-do an old fashion Mexican stand off
-dynamite the whole mansion
-ride off to the sunset to bang miss kitty.
rinse and repeat. Red Dead Redemption is gonna Awesome!
It better not be shit. Bully wasn't shit, nor was The Warriors, but both felt like shadows of the GTA formula. It's not always a good thing. I have high hopes, regardless.

BOB, that comic, was AMAZING! HAHAHAHA. I actually ended up (spoiler kind of I guess) banging Garrus but I first egged on Jacob. That dude was PISSED when I broke up with him, haha. Then Thane was like "I know you have something else going on so if you are done with that, okay". I wish the game allowed love triangles, or love rectangles. Shoot. I can't believe you got through the end by the way with Tali alive! Any ideas on how to keep Miranda alive? I didn't use her to lead anything but she died. Maybe I should? Or I should take her with me? I can't imagine any scenario where I can keep her alive. Boo.

it's kind of funny; no matter which gender you are, if you talk to mordin often enough he'll say something like "shepard, i'm flattered, but i'm not interested in you like that". but if you make a move on one of your alien crewmates, he'll offer you advice on how to do it with them painlessly (or at least for garrus). mordin is the best character in the game in my opinion. he's simultaneously spock and the anti-spock. he also does this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj0iJtgHOCI)
as for SPOILER keeping miranda alive, i'm not 100% sure. basically the way the suicide mission works is that loyal members have a better shot at surviving, but they don't necessarily have to be loyal to make it. i think that researching squad upgrades (weapons, shields, etc) affects their chances too but i'm not positive. the most important thing to do is select the right squad members for the right jobs; a tech expert has to go in the vents (that's tali or legion), a biotic expert has to do the bubble shield thing (jack or samara) and a leadership expert has to lead the fireteam (that's miranda and garrus. i think garrrus. definitely miranda though). HOWEVER. if a squad member is disloyal, selecting them for their special job can still apparently get them killed, since sending tali through the vents ended up in her dying, so i would recommend not having her lead anything, just keep her tucked away. sending a disloyal crew member back with the surviving normandy crew will get them killed too (tali died like this) but for a loyal crewmember, this is probably the safest job you can give them, since everyone else seems to live.
when did miranda die, do you remember? i got tali to survive by having her hold the line with the defense team while i went on to kill the human reaper. my understanding is that the defense team is best off when it's filled with your more hardened squad members (grunt, garrus, etc) while your more squishy crew (mordin, jack) should follow you to attack the reaper. however, when i brought tali with me (assuming she was squishy), she got crushed by a falling beam and died, and she survived when i left her with the defense team, so who the hell knows. my advice then, would be to make sure you assign the right squad members to the right jobs, keep miranda out of any special tasks, and leave her behind to defend the door while you go off to kill the reaper. that's how i kept tali alive, maybe it'll work for her too.
and as long as i'm not shutting up about mass effect 2, if you haven't been doing it i advise you to listen to the various side conversations and advertisements in the game because a lot of them are hilarious. the bar in ilium is great because of the bachelor party and the quarian talking about her sex life (it's basically a bunch of alien dick jokes but it's sci fi and therefore mildly sophisticated). there's also elcor hamlet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCO_UsyhL9o). the elcor in general are pretty awesome but that one made me laugh my ass off. it's also a callback joke to mass effect 1, i was pretty impressed with it

haha YEAH I was like, wait, what?! THIS IS AWESOME.
Also, in regards to spoilery-mcspoilerson: I used Tali in the vents, Garrus to lead the teams both times, and I sent Grunt to take the doctor back. All of those worked out awesome. So in that last battle, how the team stays behind sans the two I picked (Thane and Jack), Miranda died during whatever it was that they were doing. :(

hrmm. i guess my only suggestion would be to do everything the same, except send jack or mordin back with the doctor (since they are squishy and tend to die easily, you want as many tough bastards to defend the door as you can and grunt is as tough as they get), and try doing it with miranda in your attack team (bringing either jack or mordin with you as the other person) or maybe try leaving her behind again. i THINK the way the door defense works is that it sort of adds up the (invisible) defense value of the characters you leave behind so maybe leaving grunt there will push it over the limit? i dunno, you could be screwed :(

I'll try a few variations from my last save (saved right before I went through the Omega-4 relay). After two or three tries though, if it still doesn't work, oh well. Haha.
yeah there might not be anything you can do. you definitely did everything right up until the final choice, so just try various variations of that (also save somewhere in the mission so you don't have to watch all the cutscenes and stuff leading up to it)

also can I just say it was disturbing how much I go in to the game. Jacob seemed to angsty so I broke up with him, and Thane was too moody/mysterious and I am not attracted to that generally. Garrus was much more my speed so when my boyfriend was watching me play and saw the option to break up with Garrus he said DO IT and I said "NO! Garrus is the best one. Jacob is a bitch and Thane is a moody woman, I am already a moody woman, I don't need that shit!"
...
then I realized I was playing a video game and I need to chill out a little.
:(
yeah, i picked garrus when i played as a lady too (i think she has the better voice actor; she has a sort of husky austerity whereas the male shepard just sounds like some random white guy, which is really offputting when you make a black character), he's just so loveable. he seems kind of uh, pointy, though, i'm not sure how that would work

Beat Final Fantasy Dissidia. I maxed out Squall to level 100. The final story in the game is difficult; you could die in a couple seconds, even with a maxed out level on a character. The benefits of completing that aren't worth it to me, anyway. There aren't anymore characters to unlock, nor is it important to the story.
As a side note, while you're fighting characters in the last story, the original 8-bit music (and 16-bit music as well, I imagine, but I didn't get far enough to find out) of the Final Fantasy games can be heard on the background music.
I've been playing the hell out of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 these past couple days. Close to finishing it, I believe. I think my play time is around 10 hours. It's not a long game. There's a lot of missions to do on the side, and it's vital to keep doing them, as more are available to you, since they can gradually increase your level and give you items and gil.

Anyone else looking forward to a new Nintendo handheld. The 3DS. I've been semi-following news about it because I love my DSi for on the go gaming. I came across what is supposed to be "Leaked" photos (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fhamstern.air-nifty.com%2Fmogumogu%2F2010%2F04%2Fpost-3c64.html) of this thing, and Damn!!
Photo's are kind of boring until about half way down the page, then it's TRANSFORMERS!!!!
gears of war 3 coming out in april 2011. that feels like a long gap between that and the second one
anyway gamefly shipped splinter cell conviction, it'll probably be coming tomorrow or thursday. i'm curiously excited about it for some reason, i'm really interested to see how it plays. i have the demo but it's pretty short, i'm curious to see if the full game stays fun, it's so very different from the previous entries.
i'm a few levels into conviction. it's...really cool. the plot is, as i expected, a pretty hammy "sam, there's a crazy government conspiracy and somehow your daughter's death is related AND ONLY YOU CAN STOP IT don't tell me you're too old for this shit" that's maybe a step or two below 24 in terms of quality but it works and nobody's playing this for the plot anyway
it's a total 180 from the previous games, it's much more action packed. stealth is less about moving slowly and lurking in shadows and more about moving quickly from cover to cover and figuring out ways to murder everyone in the room as quickly as you can without them noticing. it's very reminiscent of the stealth sections of arkham asylum only with a gun instead of a grappling hook
the mark and execute system is cool but it takes a little getting used to. often i find myself in situations where i can't hit some of my marks, so i try maneuvering around to get them in range/sight only to fuck up and get spotted. or sometimes i'll set up my marks only to have people move around making me want to make NEW marks which is kind of awkward to do on the fly. it is entirely possible however that i'm doing it wrong and trying to use it too much though.
at any rate it doesn't matter, you're a killing machine with your pistol even with manual aim and getting spotted is actually kind of exciting. when you get spotted and manage to hide again, a little ghost sam appears, showing you where the enemy thinks you are. so you can take enemies down by getting spotted, disappearing, and sneaking around behind them as they approach the place where they think you are. it's all very fast-paced and surprisingly intuitive, i'm impressed.
some of the music is really funky and cool (in my opinion) but it's used pretty sparingly so far. most of it is just sort of understated ambient sneaking or combat music but every now and then they use a track that's a little more...experimental, i guess? i'm not sure what word i'm looking for but i like it and wish they'd use it a little more. but maybe they do! i'm not too far into it yet
i'm pretty impressed with the mission variety too. obviously the bulk of the game is the sneaking and killing that you see in the demo but there have been some more unique missions too. i had one where you had to sneak through a crowded civilian area and kill three agents in the dark without any witnesses, and a kind of out-of place flashback mission that was more of a straightforward third-person shooter but still kind of cool. hopefully the game will continue to be interesting.
definitely worth a rent IMO. haven't tried any of the multiplayer yet.

Its official...
MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3
Confirming the rumors posted the other day, PlanetXbox360 reported that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was shown at Capcom's Captivate event in Hawaii.
There's an embargo on the details, so you won't be seeing screen shots, movies and other things until early next week, but here's the notes they were able to get together.
• Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.
• The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.
• This will be another 2D fighter — gameplay-wise — but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.
• The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.
• The game will run in 1080p resolution.
• It will be a disc-based release.
• Apparently the game will have unlockables again.
• Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.

Disc-based? They're gonna make it full retail? That's unexpected.
Nice to hear Marvel vs Capcom 3 became a reality. I hardly touched the first two games, but I think I'll make the plunge for this new one.
As for what I have been playing, I beat Star Ocean: First Departure, including the Cave of the Seven Stars bonus dungeon. I had to take my party to a level 160 range to stand a chance in there. My playtime was at about 26 hours. The final boss was a pushover.
I feel compelled to start a second play-through, in order to recruit the characters I wasn't able to get on my first play-through, but there are other games to play, so unfortunately, I'll have to move on.
With Star Ocean: First Departure beaten, I started Star Ocean: Second Evolution. At the beginning, you can choose to start out between two characters, and while they aren't completely different adventures, they differ slightly in story, and depending on who you choose, there will be a character you won't be able to recruit in your party, so that sucks, but that's the Star Ocean series for ya. I haven't gotten too far in Second Evolution, but I'll be resuming my save in a bit.

that will HYPE lots of casual players. Dont know about some guys though. It certainly looks like it will be shaping to look like Tatsunoko vs Capcom graphics. Regardless. THAT IS SOME BADASS TRAILER.
so after spending a few more days with splinter cell conviction here are a few more comments
the single player campaign is a lot of fun but way too short. like 5-6 hours. closer to 4 if you know what you're doing. i have kind of a weird personality in that i like to play through single player games over and over again if i like them even if they don't offer traditional replay value, and i like this one, but it is very very short.
i haven't tried the multiplayer too extensively; most of it is co-op and i hate playing co-op with strangers (especially 2 player co-op games like this). there's only one adversarial mode, in which you and another player try to kill as many enemies as possible while also killing each other; you get 1 point for killing enemies, 5 points for killing a player, and you lose three for dying. it's way more fast-paced than the single player or co-op because you really want to burn through the maps and keep moving and killing as much as possible; submachine guns and assault rifles get a lot more play, which is nice, because the five seven pistol is really all you need to get you through the rest of the game. playing cat-and-mouse with another player is pretty cool, but a lot of players tend to quit when they can tell they're about to lose which is kind of annoying.
the multiplayer maps are all independent from the single player game. there's also an option to play through them by yourself in something called "deniable ops". there are two modes: hunter, in which your goal is to move through multi-stage levels, killing everyone you meet. it's much more reminiscent of the original splinter cells than the single player in that there are a lot more dark areas and there's a much larger incentive to stay hidden. if you get spotted, enemy reinforcements arrive and you have to fight twice as many enemies (also they're constantly hunting you down and trying to kill you, whereas if you stay hidden you've always got the drop on them) before you can move on to the next stage. it's actually a lot of fun and it's surprisingly long, because there's about 6 or 7 levels, each with probably five-ish stages each, so there's a great deal of content there. you can also play it co-op with a friend.
there's also "last stand" mode in which your goal is to defend an EMP against waves of enemies. i haven't tried this because it sounds stupid but you can play it with a friend if you feel like doing something that sounds stupid with a bud
there's also a co-op story mode in which you play through...well, a co-op story with another player. this consists of four of the deniable ops maps (or i guess, more appropriately, four of the deniable ops maps are taken from co-op story). i haven't tried this because again, i really hate playing co-op games with racist 12 year olds on xbox live but i've heard that the story is a prequel to sam's story in the single player game so i'm curious to try it once my friends get the game too.
so yeah. ubisoft took a chance by gutting and restarting the gameplay and it paid off because the game's a lot of fun, but i don't think it's long enough to warrant spending $60 on a new copy. it's definitely worth a rent. i'd put it at about 7/10. if i had income i'd spend $40 on it.
i will also add that while the game is fun to play, i'm not sure i care too much for dark angry rage-filled sam fisher. i think i liked him better when he had a sense of humor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM3Cl5wBgNU)

Decided to give Lair a quick try, after it's been collecting dust for a long while. The controls felt wonky -- specifically, using the PS3 controller's motion-sensing capability to move the dragon rider.
While taking out many of my old PS3 and 360 game purchases, I put in Killzone 2 and resumed my save on that. I must have been playing that for a couple hours. Initially, when I had started that game several months ago, I wasn't very good at it -- my technique and skills sucked. But this second-go was successful, and I got quite further into the story.
Also got further in Star Ocean: Second Evolution.
a friend of mine showed me this: super mario crossover (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/534416). it's the original super mario brothers in its entirety, but you can play as other nintendo characters instead of mario. there's samus, link, mega man, the contra guy, and simon belmont, and they all control just like in their original games, with all the same sound effects and music and all that. except you're moving through super mario brothers and whipping goombas and picking up mushrooms and fire flowers to power up. it's INCREDIBLY well done, i can't get enough of it.
Yeah, I was playing that for a little bit. It was interesting. Would've been better if I got my game pad working for it, but you had to install some program that detected any input from the game pad as keystrokes from your keyboard. I didn't care to go through all that trouble to play a flash game.
Playing as Simon Belmont was pretty damn awesome.
Just started FFXIII, it's a bit linear so far, the fights are really fast and confusing but they're growing on me.
Plus it's bloody gorgeous to look at.

Just finished ME2. It was good but I was a little disappointed, perhaps 7/10. It had scenes which should have been amazing - exploring a deserted ship with a deranged AI, investigating the strange behaviour of a star, etc etc. But I never really got into those levels.
Something about it just did not allow me to immerse myself in the game world like I have been able to in other games (eg Fallout 3). I think a lot of it is that there are no real puzzles, it is always obvious what you need to do next, so you don’t really need to concentrate too hard as you play, so I find it gets quite repetitive. .
It seems this way with a lot of games these days, for me a lot of the fun of a game is the satisfaction of solving a difficult problem, but most games seem afraid that the user will get stuck and make it too easy. That is one of the good things about online play, you can always find someone better than you to challenge your skills.
Also the plot of ME2 was not as exciting as ME1 I don’t think, I mean it was obviously a continuation of the same story but it felt like a filler episode plot wise.
Now playing Red Dead Redemption but also have exams so not much time for gaming.(n)

i can see that, yeah, that's definitely true about the game. there aren't any real challenging puzzles. they almost had one in the part on ilium where liara is asking you to figure out who "the observer" is by finding and analyzing five messages, but then in the end the solution is just kind of handed to you, so the tension is defused.
have you played knights of the old republic? i haven't played it in ages, but i seem to remember that game having some pretty interesting puzzles. i think one of them required you to know how to do logarithms. is "do logarithms" a phrase? i haven't taken a math course in like 6 years, i don't remember anything about that.
i'm played red dead redemption at the moment as well. it's a lot of fun; there's a lot of things to do, and the game world is huge and beautiful, but one thing that bugs me is how a lot of the missions seem to require you to spend a minute or two accompanying someone to a destination, forcing you to match their speed (which is generally quite a bit slower than you'd be able to go if you were traveling by yourself). it feels like they're padding the game length, which is totally unnecessary because it's a pretty big damn game.
still, very good

The mission on the Illium is a good example, there was also one involving a court case with Tali and her father - it would have been really cool if you had actually had to work out what had happened to her Dad and then explain it acurately to the court to complete the mission, but instead they spoon feed it to you.
Liking RDR so far, spent yesterday evening just playing poker (y)

did you get the elegant suit that allows you to cheat (i'd spoiler that but you get it so early on and it's not really mysterious that a western game allows you to cheat)? cheating adds a whole new dynamic to the game, it's kind of cool.
it's also a surefire way to find yourself a duel if you're looking for one (with apparently no consequences, they even let you right back into the game)

RDR is pretty bad ass. I haven't played it myself (boyfriend is hogging it, *cough*) but you can hogtie people, rope them up and drag them behind your horse, jump off your horse and on to a train, rob people on the train, etc.
It's really fun just to watch it, even. I can't wait to have a turn though. (!)

it's pretty cool. you can pull a card out of the bottom of the deck while dealing and it gives you a secret third card that you can switch in and out with the two in your hand to make a better hand. you can also choose to swap it with another card from the bottom of the deck when the button comes back around but it's harder to do that than it is to swap it with the two in your hand so it's better to just focus on those in my opinion.
if you screw up the minigame and get caught you get into a duel but there seem to be no consequences - nothing happens to your bounty or honor and they let you right back into the game. one time i went back to the game to find the person i had just murdered sitting there playing! the only real consequence is that you lose all the money that you'd put into the game but if you have enough money to play poker that isn't a huge thing.

i discovered something very fucked up that you can do. if you hogtie a woman and put her on the railroad tracks and watch her get run over by the train (she explodes into millions of guts btw it's kind of gross) you get an achievement. it's called "dastardly". i'm just waiting for some parent to find out about that.
anyway i beat the game yesterday - i won't spoil anything (and i strongly advise anyone playing to avoid spoilers) but the ending is pretty damn cool, it's definitely worth playing through to the end. and there's still so much to do in the world even when you're done with the game - this is one of the few games i've played where i've felt compelled to try and 100% it. i'm working on all the ambient challenges now. i'm having trouble finding skunks for the hunter challenge.
and the rank 10 sharpshooter challenge is just insane - you have to disarm 6 people without reloading or changing your gun. this is really tough because i have a hard time disarming people; i shoot for the arm or gun but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, i'm never sure what the game considers to be a "disarm". it's also rough because after you disarm someone they can just pick their gun back up, so while you're trying to disarm 6 people you're just constantly getting shot. you can't really use dead eye because once you go into it, your gun automatically reloads, so you either have to find 6 people standing out in the open to disarm all at once while in deadeye, or you have to do it gradually while aiming manually, which is a very good way to get yourself killed.
i'm also having a hard time capturing an american standardbred (black stallion), i'm just having the worst luck. one time i lassoed one and rode it back to town and i was about 2 feet away from the hitching post when it literally just keeled over and died, apparently from a heart attack or something. nobody was shooting at it, i hadn't been riding it too hard, it just...died. apparently horses will do that in this game.

hahaha I forgot about that one! My bf figured that one out as well. So hilarious, but gross, yet hilarious.
i was riding around and i came across a stagecoach and a woman said "hey mister, help me out". so i stopped and then four bandits jumped out, and i killed them and then hogtied the woman because killing her felt a little dirty but then i saw a train in the distance and thought to myself "hmm, i wonder if...."

yeah it's really convenient that i'm unemployed right now because you can just lose yourself in this game for hours and hours and never even touch a mission. i'm having a lot of fun hunting and riding around looking for random encounters. even though this game has a pretty convenient fast travel system i rarely use it, the landscape is just too damn pretty. mexico is particularly cool looking.
it's best to ride during the day in clear weather to get the full effect. if there's clouds in the sky, you can see their shadows on the ground, it's really impressive. they did not hold back in creating this game, i'm really amazed that they made the experience of riding a horse through a buildingless sparsely populated landscape so fun.

i found a map with animal locations, that sounds about right. my current hunter objective is to find foxes, raccoons, and skunks (all night animals, which is annoying since night is less pretty). it seems like the games loves to wait until i've found 5 of an animal before it starts reliably giving them to me. i spent forever trying to find raccoons and then when i finally bagged the fifth one i couldn't ride my horse for 2 minutes without running over a raccoon. i'm sure there's an army of skunks out there just waiting for me to not need them before they show themselves.

it's a very long game, even if you do just kind of power through the story missions. which i don't recommend doing, because the game has so much to offer. i got to what i assumed was going to be the endgame about 2 or 3 times before the game actually ended. it's kind of like the third lord of the rings movie, except enjoyable. the fake endings i mean.
this game is kind of weird in that the beautiful landscapes make me want to go outside, but the fun game makes me want to stay in and keep playing. i'm torn.

Lost Planet 2, Alan Wake...with the release of RDR, SMG2, 3D Dot Heroes, Trauma Team, Blur, Split/Second, some Sands Of Time-type Prince of Persia, gaming plates must have been piled high this May.
i've been playing alpha protocol quite obsessively - the gameplay is a bit clunky (but fun once you get used to it) but dear lord, they really came through on their promise of making your choices have consequences in the game. it seems like every little thing you do, right down to the order in which you do things, has both immediate and long term effects on how the missions play out and how people react to you.
in my opinion, the best thing is that they do it in a way that avoids the stupid good/evil dichotomy that most RPGs use; instead of getting good and evil points or whatever, your actions just have consequences, that's it. if you're nice to a person, she might have sex with you, if you're mean to her, she'll call you an asshole and try to club you to death with a statue, but that's it, it's just a cause and effect kind of thing. i couldn't possibly try to explain all the various ways in which the various choices you have influence the various things in the game it's just...really interesting.
the gameplay seems kind of shitty at first until you realize that it's more of an action RPG than a straight 3rd person shooter. for example, unless you pump skill points into a weapon type, you're going to be absolutely horrible with it, it's not gears of war here. you have to kind of specialize your character and invest your skill points into the things you want to use, and once you do that, the game becomes quite playable - it reminds me a lot of deus ex, in terms of how absolutely shitty the guns are until you put your skill points into them, then they become murder machines.
hint: use pistols, especially if you're a stealth character. the chain shot ability is basically a "win" button against bosses and groups of enemies. very few bosses can stand 6 shots to the face at once.

Yeah I guess I'm not really into RPGs at all, so the RPG elements of it kind of turned me off. I like how many weapons and abilities there are but at the same time it was kind of a pain in the ass trying to figure what would be best to improve my character. Because of the PS3 Slim, prices for the PS3 have dropped down by $100.
Xbox360 on the other hand is selling the arcade version for $199 and the elite at about $250. Lets just say prices are dropping because of the newer models and.... because of the new technologies they're bringing like Kinect (Natal) and PS Move to attract more casual consumers.

So I am going for the platinum trophy on RDR, still along way to go.
Bob - I got the 'buckin awesome' trophy last night (ps3 version) which involved finding and breaking the American Standard Breed. It is really hard to find, because at night all the horses look pretty much the same but I found two together on the Great Plains in daylight. I thought I was going to miss out because while I was breaking it, it wandered onto the train tracks just as a train was coming (after your 'heart attack' story I could not believe my bad luck).
It was OK though, the train did not kill me or the horse, it just kind of glitched/pushed us of the track. I didnt need to hitch it either, I got the trophy as soon as it calmed down so maybe the horse you had was not the standard breed?
Anyway, really enjoying this game, I think it would benefit from a few more RPG elements (for example I think it would be cool if the wilderness was more hostile, and you needed to carry water and food), but cant really complain, it is really good.

i got the achievement for the horse a while ago, it's entirely possible that the horse i thought i was getting at the time was not actually a standardbred. a lot of the dark horses do kind of look alike.
if you think the wilderness isn't hostile enough, you are clearly not encountering enough bears and cougars! cougars are just the worst. they rape you (and your horse) when you aren't expecting them, and if you're working on the challenge that requires you to stab two of them, they're nowhere to be found. they're the most ridiculous animal in the game because unlike every other animal, there aren't any places in the game where you can go where they hang out, they're just a sort of rare animal that spans the entire game world outside of mexico. you don't find them, they find you. you are their bitch. for the most part i like them on account of the element of danger that they insert into the game, but i hate, HATE trying to stab them for that hunting challenge. they're just impossible to find on purpose, and even when you do it just isn't fun to try and get them with the knife.
HAL 9000
06-17-2010, 07:33 AM
I found that if you shoot the cougar first with a pistol, it kind of limps off, which makes it easy to finish with the knife, and this still counts for the challenge.
In terms of the RPG elements, I was thinking that it would be cool if, when you went out in the wilderness, you had limited capacity to carry stuff, so you have to choose, do I have enough water/food for my journey, can I find more on the way? In which case do I have enough weaponry to hunt and deal with bandits...
perhaps you can travel easier at night, as its not so hot, but you are more likely to be attacked... Or you can pay to get a coach, but that costs a lot of money.
I feel like the main charater is a bit overpowered - as with GTA you can easily take on dozens of bad guys and kill them. Also, pretty early on in the game, money becomes no object as you can easily afford anything you need so playing horseshoes or doing small jobs becomes kind of pointless (its good that they have the outfit tasks to keep you doing these things).
I think its a great game but I also think that if you combined the presentation and environment of this game, with the RPG elements of Fallout, you would have pretty much a perfect game IMO.
deus ex turns 10 years old today so steam is selling it for $2.50 (down from $10). invisible war is also $2.50 (down from 10); it isn't nearly as good but it's decent so long as you pretend it's not a deus ex sequel, it's definitely worth $2.50.

Agreed, I should have clarified that the RPG elements I would like to see, are purely for my benefit. I doubt they would be to everyone's taste and would no doubt have a negative impact on the game's sales.R* never did make significant steps towards RPG gameplay anyways.
Then again, who needs to tell the consumer that it would have major RPG elements (If it had any)? 90% of them looked at Rockstar & cowboys and it resulted in an instant buy.
And from a narrative stand-point, it wouldn't make sense unless they wanted to basically make a new story about a small time outlaw making it big in the West and crafting his talent along the way...which would have resulted in something rather "similar"...not to mention it would be the perfect excuse for R* to go BioWare on their main character.
Anyways I bought a bunch of XBLA games recently like Earthworm Jim HD, Shadow Complex, Castle Crashers, Splosion Man, Prince of Persia Classic, Crystal Defenders, Alien Humonid HD, and Toy Soldiers; anybody else with these titles?

I avoided the game for a couple of days because I was starting to dream of horses and cowboys. I was afraid the dreams would go all Brokeback Mountain on me if I continued the marathon playing sessions :(
haha. i played it pretty obsessively for a few days when it came out too, and one day i was riding on a bus and i saw a deer bounding along the side of the road and my first instinct was to try and shoot it. i don't even hunt!

i've been getting back into fallout 3; i forgot how fun that game is. i broke into the national archives to get the declaration of independece, only to discover that it was guarded by an army of robots led by a robot in a powdered wig who thinks he's button gwinnett, second signer of the declaration. i used my speech skill to convince him that i was thomas jefferson and that he could finally stand down from his eternal duty. i also stole his wig. then i found a thomas jefferson robot except it was malfunctioning and played the threee doogggg radio station.

If I have to re-buy every game I already own then I won't be able to buy the new games that come out ;)
Four player co-op does sound good though...
We'll see, multiplayer is one of those things that sounds good on paper but I never seem to be able to pull off for various reasons.
i checked out the demo for kane & lynch 2. the single player i could care less about (and i mean that literally, i have an intermediate level of care about it; i could care less about it than i do, but i don't care that much) but the multiplayer could be really interesting.
there are three game modes, only one of which is available in the demo. it's called "fragile alliance" and it's pretty cool. at the beginning, you and 7 players participate in a heist in which you kill a group of NPC goons and scramble to pick up the cash that they drop. you then have to shoot your way past the cops and get to the escape vehicle. all the surviving members split the loot evenly at the end, and i think you get bonuses for the amount you've personally grabbed and the amount of cops you've killed.
the key phrase there is "surviving members", so if you're feeling lucky there's an incentive to stab your buddies in the back after the heist to kill them and increase the split of the loot. this is dangerous though, since wounding or killing a buddy marks you as a traitor and you can be killed without consequence by the rest of the group.
when you die, you respawn as a cop and you have to try and kill all the criminals; so you still get to play, but it's really in your best interest to try and stay alive as a criminal, since cops don't get very much money at the end of the round. money can be used to buy better guns and is used as a score to determine the top player of the game. there seems to be a kind of call of duty-ish ranking system where the more you play, the higher your rank, and the more guns you can unlock. there's also a sort of reputation system, so that if you have a penchant for killing teammates, everyone on your team will know about it ahead of time. i don't know if this is persistent and it sticks to your gamertag, or if it only lasts as long as the game you're in. either way it's a cool concept.
there's two other game modes - undercover cop, which sounds similar to fragile alliance only one of the team members is a cop who has to find a way to stop the crooks from escaping after the heist (his identity is a secret) and "cops and robbers" which sounds like a more straight-up team death match.
i'll probably be giving it a rent

I'm rather surprised the console users are more friendlier then the PC users then last time; seriously, Dead Men were so filled with gangster-wannabes that I wondered if there were any decent players left (and there weren't that many to begin with from my experience). Why I say this is because IO didnt' really do a good job at implement any kind of voice options for this demo (especially on PC) so basically, there's a very good chance one or more players will constantly keep their mics on with static or more annoying noises nor you can tell who's voicing what until the after-action report so you can shoot his ass in the next round (even so that will probably get you killed too).
Still, minus that they realized Freedom Force-style gameplay wouldn't fit with Lynch's way of getting things done, this was really how Dead Men should have been played. Yeah, I think IO tried going for more realistic recoil but it always felt a bit finicky not to mention it didn't help that the cover system and enemy AI was too frustrating for that kind of shooting mechanic. I mean, I'm disappointed it didn't turn out to be the Michael MannXTony Scott video game we were waiting for nor that Dog Days has turned into a totally different beast but the fact what it has become is just as intriguing (and looks like it'll actually succeed from what I've played) is a win anyways. Besides, who doesn't want to shoot baddies down with a belt-fed light machine gun while wearing sweatpants?
I was also surprised it was 60 frames per second on the console versions; it almost felt like if Call of Duty was a 3rd Person Shooter only.

I'm cautiously excited for the new Spider-man game. It looks really cool, but they always do and then usually end up sucking (except Spider-man 2 and Ultimate Spider-man). But I'm really hopeful. From Neversoft's Spider-Man to Treyarch's Spider-Man 2, that was a golden era of DAMN good Spidy games.
Batman: Brave & The Bold also comes out on the 7th.
i got mafia 2 through gamefly - really cool. the graphics are crisp as hell, the cars handle well, and i love all the little details in the game like the diners and the bars and the food and drink in the fridge, it feels like 1940s new york (i assume, at least, i wasn't alive then)
at first the return of speed limits dismayed me but it isn't a big thing - it's easy to just pop the speed limiter on when you see a cop on the radar and then turn it off when you pass him. plus it's nice to have an easy way to slow down to a reasonable speed to take a 90 degree turn. not to mention that so far, a lot of the cars get hard to control if you go too fast so it's nice to be able slow down easily.
i like how the game actually gives you an incentive to give a shit about keeping your car intact. cars you own in your garage have their stats tracked, like miles driven and money invested. if you beat up your car, you have to pay to get it repaired, so there's actually a reason to try and drive carefully.
i am apparently quite racist though. so far i've been asked to drive into a "moolie" neighborhood to kill 4 black dudes and steal a car.

i checked out the demo, it's...quite something. i had absolutely no idea what was going on half the time but it was cool and stuff. i'll give it a rent
i also bought dead rising 2 case zero. it's short, but it's supposed to be, and it's got me excited enough for the full game. the graphics are way more detailed, which unfortunately causes the framerate to suffer a little bit but it's not too awful. i like how the zombie blood sticks to you in more noticeable ways. and the broadsword is pretty bad-ass. survivor AI pathfinding seems to be a lot more competent, but we'll see how they do in the full game. i didn't have any issues with them in case zero, they were always right behind me unless they got caught up by a zombie, and then they stuck back to the path when i freed them. but it's a small playing area with few to no plants and fountains for them to get stuck on. dead rising one was so, so, so bad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UCTQuyqeBQ) in that regard, they must have learned a lesson for the sequel. i'm cautiously optimistic.

dunno if anyone's into paradox games, but victoria 2 came out a few weeks ago. as with all paradox releases, it's going to take a few patches and probably an expansion before it reaches its full potential but it's probably the most polished first release they've had yet, it's quite playable.
victoria was always my favorite game of the series so i'm excited to see how the game develops. i like a lot of the changes they made from the first one, they got rid of a lot of the tedious population and trade management and streamlined a lot of things. unfortunately, all the streamlining means that the game has a TON of calculations to make every day which makes the second half of the game run like molasses, at least on my computer. i dunno if they're planning to improve that or if there's nothing they can do about it.
anyway it's good stuff, check it out if you're into those games.

So I just got the RDR platinum trophy. Took a crazy amount of time but good fun as I probably would not have bothered getting good at the multiplayer if it was not for the trophies.
Done with RDR now, I need an interim game to play for the 5 weeks before Fallout:New Vegas takes up the rest of my gaming year.
Was thinking of Infamous but I believe that is a fairly long game and I probably wont get that far in the time I had. Might give Portal a try on PC as I have heard good things.
mass effect 2 has a whole bunch of DLC out if you wanted to revisit that. off the top of my head there's:
zaeed's stuff
kasumi's stuff
the hammerhead DLC
overlord pack (includes a bunch of new missions, i'm not sure exactly what's on it but i've heard good things)
lair of the shadow broker (lets you continue your relationship with liara if you had one in ME1 and also has new missions)
i feel like there's other stuff i'm forgetting too. i've only played kasumi's DLC because i'm too broke for anything else right now but it was fun.
HAL 9000

Might give Shadow broker a try. I was a bit underwhelmed by ME2, but I hear that is a good one. Having said that I totally failed to establish any meaningful romantic relationship with any character in ME1 or 2. And I was trying, especially in ME2. At one point I think I went on a date with the ships councillor (there was flirting and then it cut to the next morning).
I never actually did the Fallout3 DLC either, in fact I have never really got any DLC that I had to pay for, not an ethical thing, just never bothered. I heard the fallout stuff was really buggy but I would hope it had been patched by now. Will give a few of those a go too!
i heard grumblings of bugs too. the only fallout 3 DLC i have is operation anchorage, which i heard made some people's games freeze (even outside of the DLC levels) but i've never had a problem with it (i'm on the 360). it's pretty cool, kind of different from the base game in that there's less of a focus on looting and selling and more on the action.
from what i've read, broken steel would probably be the DLC you want to get, though; it extends the game past the end of the main story mission, lets you level up 10 more levels and adds...other stuff as well, i assume, i don't remember what exactly. but i think i've heard the most good things about that.

So I finished Broken Steel - it basically added 3 main qusts and 3 side quests. The main quests were pretty cool but £8 for 4 or 5 hours of gameplay is not great - especially when I bought the original Fallout 3 for £12 and got about 80 hours out of it. Great moral dilemma at the end of the final quest though.
Im thinking of Portal on PC or might give Bioshock 1 a go as the preview of Infinite look awesome and I want to get into the Bioshock universe.
so civ 5 is pretty addictive. i have now played through both a sunrise and sunset without noticing (not consecutive ones, mind)
i'm kind of surprised it runs on my computer. i have a 3-4 year old laptop but it runs alright on the lowest settings. i might be able to take it a little higher but it chugs a little as is. it's 1740 and i've discovered the whole world and turns are starting to take a pretty long time. and it seems to be a bit more slow-paced than civ 4 to begin with.
i like it, even though i'm not 100% sure what i'm doing. the emphasis on ranged units and smaller armies is way different, wars are a lot more strategic now. and the social policy mechanic is neat too, though a little overwhelming in that there are lots of them and i'm never sure which one to pick. though they all fit into one of 8 general themes, so that's convenient enough.

Amnesia is pretty fucking scary for a video gameEvery other developer outside of Eastern Europe needs to step up their game with more straight-up psychological M-rated Horror titles because games that are copying Dead Space's stride and horror franchises not being scary needs to stop.
Dead Rising 2
Meanwhile, creativity does indeed kill. :D
dead rising 2 is pretty awesome. if you liked the first game, you definitely need to play this, it's fun for all the same reasons. and if you didn't like the first one, you might still like this, depending on why you didn't like the first one.
there's a lot to talk about with the game but i'll just leave it at the most important point: the survivor ai pathfinding is not retarded! i've rescued about a dozen of them so far and every time they've been very smart about following me. every time i turn around, they're right behind me and doing fine, unless they're being attacked by a zombie, but that's ok, that's kind of a hazard that you would expect to have in this kind of game. i'm so incredibly relieved that they fixed it, it was so, so shitty in the first game. now finding and rescuing survivors is, dare i say....fun?
addendum: the boss fights kind of suck, but that was true in the first one too. hopefully this game has a mega buster too because that's the only thing that made the boss fights bearable on subsequent play throughs of the first game

In the first one it was night time so the zombies are red eyed and hungry, and I have next to no fucking weapons, and I've decided to take on the bloke in the gun shop. I walk out of the bathroom, walk through some empty shop spaces and clear the room-ish area outside the gun shop (it's a gun shop, right?) and then hide by the door way and get some pot shots on the cunt. And he always fucks me up and/or more zombies rock up behind me.
I can't do it. The game makes me want to murder a lamb in front of school kids; I'm so shit at it it may as well be Nick Riviera's finger-trap. I seriously thought about just sitting in the bathroom until the game's timer expired because everywhere I went I got wrecked eventually. I did get the key from underneath, whatever that was. That helped a litttle bit. You're probably sick of me talking about it. I think I probably overestimate how ineterested people are in my shit. Fuck this game.
I beat Alan Wake, so I'm ok at easy games.
I just wish it didn't have the timer. I hate being rushed through games.
It is pretty good fun though, but seeing as I never played the first one I'm having a hard time trying to adjust to the game bombarding me with missions. What makes it worst is that I'm a perfectionist and I try to complete every damn one of them. Which leads to me failing one or missing another and then hurling the pad across my front room.
I hope they have a timerless game+ on completion. I just want to explore and fuckshitup.

if it helps, the gun shop boss was one of the hardest, maybe the hardest bosses in that game. he was also completely optional, you never had to fight him unless you wanted to use the guns in the gun shop. but yeah he was bullshit hard and i could never beat him without the mega buster.
but if stuff like that is why you didn't like dead rising, you probably won't like dead rising 2 either, the bullshit hard boss fights are back. running around and picking up survivors and getting through zombies is fun and manageable but the bosses...fuck them. i've just been skipping them, hopefully the ones you're forced to fight through the main story are easier. i'm also not terribly high-leveled, so that doesn't help.

Oh god, I've watched so many boss walkthroughs for Dead Rising 2 today :(
It wouldn't be so bad if the game actually gave you some damn time to run around and make some fucking super weapons, but you spend all your time rescuing retards and finding Zombrex for your stupid brat because you were too fucking stupid to carry a case full of it around with you in the first place like a sane person would do.
I was running out of time to get to one of the story boss missions (4th time of trying), and each previous time I'd just been running past shop after shop of hats, shoes and coathangers (supreme boss battle weapons, I thik you'll agree), and naturally I was dying instantly each time the battle started. The 4th time I got swamped by zombies and got forced to take a detour underground, and by some miracle I ran past a maintenence room with some gasoline and a water pistol outside so I actually managed to whack together a flamethrower and win for once. I think it'll take weeks of imprinting all the various ways around the map in my mind before I stand a decent chance of getting anywhere.
Addictive, yet stressful.
if you're hurting for weapons, there are a few supremely awesome weapons you can make with ingredients found right outside your safehouse. i'll put them in white text in case you want to figure them out for yourself but these weapons are pretty damn good
boxing gloves + bowie knife = knife gloves. these are probably the best melee weapon in the game, i have two of them with me at all times. they're fast and they do a lot of damage, they're great against bosses and zombies alike. boxing gloves are found in man's sport, which is a few shops to the left as you exit the safehouse, and you can find a bowie knife on top of the "yesterday, today, and tomorrow" booth right outside that shop.
sledgehammer + fireaxe = defiler. this is one of the more bad-ass looking weapons and it's pretty awesome against zombies, though i think it might be of limited use until you find the combo card because its default attack is kind of slow and impotent. you'll want to use the heavy attack, which ironically is faster and has a wider swing. but don't hold the button down for too long, or you'll start spinning and leave yourself vulnerable. hold the button until you start to attack and then let go. it takes a little practice but it cuts through hordes of zombies like nobody's business. there's a sledgehammer at the end of the hall leading out of the safehouse and a few fireaxes inside the safehouse itself.
baseball bat + nails = spike bat. this is probably the first weapon you made but it's still pretty useful. not quite as good as either of the above two IMO
MMA gloves + nails = tenderziers. i loved these until i found out about the knife gloves. it has a VERY fast attack so it's decent against groups of zombies and good for hit + run attacks on bosses. not as good as the knife gloves though (few weapons are)
flashlight + gems = lightsaber. you'll have to go a little further for this one - both ingredients can be found in the maintenance room behind the stage at slot ranch casino. looters often carry flashlights as well - if you can find one in royal flush plaza, then just go to marriage makers and pick up some gems and you won't have to go as far. i wish this weapon were more useful but it's still pretty cool because hey, lightsaber
and if you're looking for guns, there are a few options for that as well
there are two shotguns and two sniper rifles that spawn in the gun shop on the second floor of the palisades mall. doing the survivor scoop "wilted flower" unlocks a shortcut between royal flush and palisades which makes going there very convenient.
there's also an LMG on the awning above cash gordon's casino, on the strip. it's right outside the door to the americana casino; hop on top of the snack machine then onto the awning and you've got it, it's a sweet gun.
and as far as health goes, here's where to find good healing items
the coffee shop "dark bean" right outside the safehouse has 3 coffee creamers which heal 4 health bars apiece. very handy.
the bar in the central floor of the americana casino has a blender and an infinite supply of beer. beer + beer = painkiller juice, which heals a ton of health and makes you take half damage for 60 seconds. this is a very handy thing to have for boss fights, i like to carry a few with me at all times. mixing the drink can be a pain though because of all the zombies swarming around that blender. it's worth it though. and even though the drink is made from beer, it won't make you sick, so don't worry about that
the boss fights in this game can be really hard on your first time through the game because you're so underleveled. honestly i just skipped most of them for my first run and focused on rescuing survivors and doing the main story missions. i started my second run at around level 34 and they became MUCH easier, all you have to do is run up to them and wail on them with the first weapon i mentioned up there and they go down easy enough. you might also consider equipping your survivors with guns and taking them with you to the fight, they can be surprisingly helpful (though the bosses will occasionally try to kill them, so this can be dangerous).
i don't know if this is obvious but i really like dead rising 2 and might have played it for a few hours
i think the game becomes a lot more fun on subsequent runs, when you've got a handle on the layout of the city and what the good weapons are and where to find them and so on. being high level helps a lot too because you can run faster, carry more items, hit harder, throw farther, take more damage and do more special moves. the game can be really precarious when you're just starting out but you become quite hard to kill as you level up. rescuing survivors is the fastest way to do that, so make sure to get as many as you can (unless it means you'll fail a story mission, if you care about those (which you don't have to!)).

Wow, Bob - a lot of effort went into that post! Cheers for the help - one thing I haven't really done much is mix drinks together yet, so I'll have to focus on that a whole lot more if I want to survive I guess.
Side note - if you want the secret achievement... it's two parts orange juice in a mixer, gaffer taped together with a queen bee/wasp in a maintenence room. Apparently if you let it loose it flies around popping zombies' heads like ripe melons (although when I got it I accidentally threw it at a zombie instead of releasing it, and nothing happened and I lost the damn weapon :()
I get annoyed when I have to do multiple things at once, it means I have to miss out on so much awesome stuff: I stumbled upon a trio of poker players who challeneged me to a game, but I left them because I was running out of time for a story mission, and thought they'd be safe til I returned. Turns out that was my one chance, and now I've doomed them to 'FOUND' limbo. I also thought I'd retry tackling that loose tiger and its inbred owner at a later date, but again... they were no longer there. Apparently you can tame the tiger and take it back to Katey as a present for her :S
I seriously love this game, but it's not good for my health: I had to rescue some dude in an art gallery, and when we went outside, a bunch of hillbilly bosses appeared on the casino rooftops and started taking pot-shots at us, so I ran into the nearest building for health only to start a cutscene with a boss who killed me with one shot because the hillbilly snipers had taken all my health. *Cue ragequit*

yeah the game definitely can be frustrating, especially when it comes to boss fights. they're not very good and it's too easy to accidentally walk into them at times. even at high level with the knife gloves they still aren't fun, they're just manageable, tolerable even.
the only boss fight in the game that i actually found fun is the helicopter fight on the roof of the hotel. it has a pattern, it doesn't do bullshit damage, it doesn't have bullshit amounts of health, it's actually kind of fun to fight. the rest are more of a matter of trying to guess when their invincibility frames are and trying to find time to run away and drink an OJ, they're a little disappointing
fortunately the rest of the game is a blast and makes up for it in spades
another useful mix drink is the quickstep, which is wine + wine (also available at the americana, next to the beer). it makes you move very fast, which can be handy if you need to get somewhere fast

This too. Again, I only played an hour but because I had to give the kid Zombrex in that hour I wasn't certain how long I could venture around outside so I went straight back so I can give her the medicine at that specific hour. Then I had an hour to go and I had to walk around doing nothing, being bored out of my skull because before that I didn't pay attention to how the game tracks time (an hour on the game, is that 10 minutes of actual play time? 15? 20? I didn't know).
Also, what's with all the written captions? Could they not afford voice actors?
It also felt a little cheap, aside from the written captions I mean.

It's just strange to see such a mainstream, publicized game where they managed the cut-scenes and load screens so poorly.
And time is actually pretty important even for a not-so-important person. I work for a living, have a personal life, and when I play video games to relax for a bit I expect to actually play a game, not sit through 30 minutes of cutscenes and load screens.
It's a valid criticism of the game, so chill out fan boy.

I've been playing the game for review, and I've already found three unlockable characters -- MCA, Mike D, and Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys, who are playable as part of the NY Knicks. ok, but they're really not that long. i think that 30 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration, at least certainly once you get past the opening parts of the game. the loading times are probably about as long as mass effect 2's. the cutscenes can be a little longer and more redundant than they need to be, but i'm really not sure that it's as intolerable as you're making it sound

I'm a PC gamer through and through and so usually don't have to bother with loading screens, and even I didn't find them that bad. The only time they got on my tits was when I left a survivor in the previous area and had to go back to collect them. But still - no biggie.

Been playing Fallout New Vegas for about a week now.
This game seems much glitch(ier) than Fallout 3, but for some reason I'm way more into this one than I ever was with Fallout 3. Even though I really dug the whole Post Apocalyptic theme of FO3, FONV seems to fit me better.
HAL 9000

Really enjoying FONV, but some aspects are a little disapointing, the graphics now look pretty tired and the game is very buggy (as you point out it seems worse than FO3 but then I came to FO3 after it had several patches).
As I have said above, for me the perfect game would have fallout's rpg and plot elements using a Red Dead-esque game engine.
Anyway, I am going for a platinum so am trying to play through on Hardcore mode, which doesnt actually make it that hard as it is independent of the difficulty setting (ie you can play Easy - hardcore). I am guessing I will need to play through again for the platinum though as I imagine I cant do many of the missions due to the alliances that I have made so far.
I also played through Bioshock 1 before Fallout came out and liked very much. Strangely its artwork is very like fallout with a 1950s projection of a post apocalyptic world. It is quite an easy Platinum trophy if anyone is into collecting them.

NEW GOLDENEYE 007 (y)
Oh I bought Black Ops and I'm a little bit underwhelmed by it. I never really bother with single player - it's just like walking down a corridor with lots of fireworks going off. I buy it for MP mainly.
Treyarch just never seem to get it as right as Infinity Ward. The game is sub HD even though the games pretends it's native resolution is 1080p (my tv sets to a horribly upscaled 1080i setting and everything looks a little hazy), the MP levels are just a campers paradise and as such you get penalised for actually walking around to look for a kill - oh great I was shot by another turd who was festering in the corner.
I'm going to stick with it, but anyone who says that the game is as good as COD4 deserves to be kneecapped.

i read this is the best cod by Treyarch, plays like MW2, has less bullshit than MW2 and basically tries to copy Infinity Ward. Now, I'm not really into FPS so when I started with MW2 I didnt really understood the complaints MW2 got. I enjoy the game even though there is some bullshit tactics but they're easy (for me) to go around it.
Camo you are the first guy I heard with some complaint over Black Ops. I havent played it but I did expect the performance less stellar than MW2. Everything MW2 ran so smooth from the animation to sounds of fire. I didnt see that kind goodness in Black Ops from the video clips I've seen.
But is the game worth over MW2?

11-11-2010, 05:14 AM
MW2 feels a bit more smooth and polished than Black Ops.. And yeah some of the maps FUCK me off. Nuketown is great though. Knifing people is very hit and miss compared to MW2. Graphics not quite as good. But I'll still keep playing it. Claymores are better. Some weapons are better. Feels a bit try hardy.
What Mikizee said, well except for Nuketown. That map is abysmal!!!
Treyarch are not IW, simple as. W@W and Black Ops are not modern warfare and so I will leave it at that. Modern Warfare is the original and the treyarch attempts are the straight to dvd sequels.
I will also carry on playing it.

Wow that is really cool. I am a big fan of their podcasts, I kind of picture working at IGN as my dream job.

Black-Ops sucks.
Gonna get Gran Turismo 5
single player-wise i thought black ops was a fun rental. it seems like it's trying too hard to be edgy and awesome and outdo MW2 (which it doesn't do) and the interrogation scene storytelling mechanism gets obnoxious pretty quickly but overall it's still a very fun FPS with some pretty cool set pieces. the plot is really cheesy and takes itself way too seriously but i thought the big reveal was actually kinda neat as long as you don't think too hard about it. and nobody plays these for the plot anyway.
plus running around as kennedy killing zombies in the pentagon is fun
i haven't really played the multiplayer yet

Just gave feedback on new stuff they have going on. It's a potential pay service with their site with a lot of perks. I told them what is good about it and what sucks. Then I took a tour, met some folks, and that's about it. It was still a lot of fun though. :)

So I am still playing Fallout: NV - now 73 hours in. Just cleared out Vault 11 and I have got to say that is one of the greatest pieces of video game story telling I have ever seen.
It is not even a significant part of the game's plot, I only went in to get a part for an air conditioning unit, but you end up staying and exploring to find out what happened to the people that lived there. If you have the game, but not found that part yet, I can't recommend it enough. The way the story gets put together as you explore until the big reveal at the end is just fantastic. More of video games should be like that. (y)(y)(y)
i rented assassin's creed: brotherhood and it's pretty awesome. with all the hype about the multiplayer it's easy to forget that it's also a full-fledged single player entry in the assassin's creed series. it's not a full on sequel because it still takes place in italy with ezio, but it's set in an entirely new area (rome) and has enough new shit to make it worthwhile (and honestly even if it didn't do anything new it would still be good, AC2 was great).
the biggest thing imo is the combat system - they changed it so that now, when you're doing a kill animation, you can target another enemy and queue up another kill, so you can chain executions. this way, if you're in a group of enemies, you can kill each of them in one hit provided you can keep the chain going. enemies will attack you and try to interrupt you but you can counter attack to keep it going. it kind of reminds me of arkham asylum, just a little bit. it's really nice.
there's also a new element where you manage a team of assassin recruits. the city is full of 9 towers, and killing the enemy captain and burning down the tower opens up a recruitment slot where you can recruit an assassin. you can send them on missions to earn you money and level up their skills, or you can call them in to assassinate guards or help you out in fights (which they get better at as you level them up). it's pretty cool to target a guard, whistle, and have an assassin pop out of a nearby bale of hay or something and stab the dude.
there's also a city building element, where as you liberate the city of borgia towers, you can renovate the shops and landmarks around the city to earn more money. unfortunately you have to physically walk up to them to renovate them, which is weird, because AC2's villa renovation thing was all done from a central menu so...i dunno.
they gave you a crossbow, which is finally actually in the game after seeing it in the teaser trailer for AC1. it's basically a long range stealth weapon with plentiful ammo, it's pretty stylin'.
and like in AC2, there's loads of shit for you to do on the side, outside of main story missions. there are "romulus lairs" which are kind of like the assassin tombs in AC2 (though mostly not as pretty to look at, but still fun to play), short, one-shot missions, "war machine" missions where you have to destroy crazy inventions that leonardo da vinci was forced to make for the enemy (one of them is a tank), and so on. it's a big game, there's a lot to do.
they did some stuff i don't like, however. some of the missions are a little meh; the worst ones in AC2 were the ones where you either a) had to tail someone or b) had to remain undetected or you'd fail. fortunately AC2 didn't have very many of them but there seem to be twice as many in brotherhood. i don't really understand why they did that.
i also feel like the jumping controls got a little wonkier. too many times i found myself jumping in a random direction or off a wall or something without meaning to. maybe the other games were the same, i dunno, i haven't played them in a while but i feel like it's happening a lot more in this one.
and as neat as rome is, it has one geographic obstacle that gets really old, really fast - outside the city, in the countryside, there are these cliffs that will randomly get in your way and make you take the long way around to get where you're trying to go. i'm sure they're probably there in real life but the devs could have at least made it possible to climb them, they're really annoying.
anyway over all i'd say 8/10. the fun outweighs the flaws by far, it's definitely worth checking out if you liked AC2.
i haven't even tried the MP yet

I've been playing more games than ever.
Got the new Donkey Kong Country, which is amazing.
New Goldeneye is still a blast online.
And I finally got a PS3 and I'm not completely obsessed with Red Dead Redemption.
Seriously, best fucking game ever.

EA inadvertently posted Mass Effect 3 for pre-order (http://pc.ign.com/articles/113/1139650p1.html) but the official announcement was supposed to be tomorrow during the VGA's.
Haha.

Just spent over an hour and a half on "Zombie Driver", game that's 2,25 euro on steam at the moment.
I've paid more for my lunch, and this is way more fun than school lunch!

Ah, I saw that, but didn't clock that it was so cheap. Might have to buy it.
Been playing Beat Hazard this week - another cheapo game from Steam. You basically pilot a little ship in a bunch of swirling colours while music from your itunes library plays and other ships shoot at you. The heavier or faster the song, the harder the level.
I think the aim is not to die, but the target I set myself is not to trip balls when the computer screen is flashing away like a demented set of traffic lights barely two feet away from my face. I keep failing (lb)
