her interviewed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la43HAPqCNk) immediately after being kicked out of the torch ceremony in san francisco. going to try and find some more info on her. the chinese paramilitary units grabbed the flag from her hands, and the cops and security proceeded to shove her off the streets banning her from participating.

This thread would of been really funny if you mis-spelled flag instead of whips.

Fellow torch-bearer Richard Doran, 57, a retired FDNY firefighter, called Carter's maverick move "disgusting and appalling."

"I think she dishonored herself and her family, and if she wanted to do that, she should've given up her spot to someone else," said Doran, 57, who carried the torch wearing his Rescue 4 helmet to honor firefighters killed on 9/11.

Retired NYPD cop Jim Dolan, 64, who also carried the flame, agreed, saying, "That was not the time and place to do it. We were there to represent the best of American citizens."
Personally, when I think of the best of American citizens, I think of people who aren't afraid to stand up for their belief in what is right, even if it does cause a controversy. What I don't think of are people who are apathetic and unconcerned about being involved with an unjust power with human rights abuses. I think any representative of America involved with the Olympics has the responsibility to acknowledge this, and condemn it.

Coca-Cola officials, who invited Carter to participate in the relay, were also chagrined.

"It's unfortunate that Ms.Carter used an invitation to participate in the torch relay as a platform to make a personal, political statement," company flack Kelly Brooks said.

Carter bristled at the criticism.

"It would be more disgusting not exercising my constitutional right," said Carter, adding that her deceased parents would have been "thrilled" by her act of defiance
If Coca-Cola and other companies can use an event such as the Olympics as an advertising opportunity, an American citizen can use the event to express solidarity. Coca-Cola may have paid to be a sponsor, but every American citizen has the constitutionally protected right of freedom of speech and expression. The humanity of solidarity, to stand up for the oppressed and stand for peace and justice, is closer to the true heart of the Olympics than pushing a commodity.

Furthermore, I don't feel as if Chinese paramilitary personnel have the right to enforce Chinese suppression on American soil against American people. Especially when form of protest was completely peaceful and non-disruptive, such as Carter's protest. America is not a suppressive pseudo-communist nation; and if we're going to condemn other pseudo-communist regimes such as Cuba and Venezuela, we should be consistent and condemn them all.

Yes, she is amazing. I can't believe Coca-Cola thought it was "unfortunate" (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/04/11/2008-04-11_china_protester_is_torched_by_critics.html) for Majora "'to participate in the torch relay as a platform to make a personal, political statement,' company flack Kelly Brooks." They chose her as a torch bearer because of her activism! Did they somehow expect that she would shelve her fight for "environmental justice" when given an opportunity to speak out for Justice?

Personally I expected nothing less from her than simple, symbolic, peaceful action.

Here's another link to her passionate Ted talk on "Greening the Ghetto" (http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/53) with some more info.

i really hope more athletes and participants speak up during the olympics. it would be really cool to see athletes wearing a tibetan flag on their jerseys/uniforms in solidarity.

the irony that for so many years the US gov have waged a war against communism... only to now allow something far worse: a fascist state to parade along the streets of San Fran... not that it makes a difference what city these thugs are patrolling!!!

heart warming that there are such brave people still, when most are truly apathetic.

As alien said, I hope to see a similar stand as was made in 33 by Jesse Owens in Berlin.
Tibetan flags waved on the medal podium!!!

Berlin Olympics were in 1936, and Owens didn't do anything except compete.

You might be thinking about Mexico 1968, when Tommie Smith and John Carlos did this:

 oops... showing my ignorance of olympic history!!

yeah for some reason I had always contrived Jesse Owens (in 36 ;))
and that protest on the podium - cheers for that!
