So my New York mag just arrived (or I just unearthed it from a pile of mail) and it's entitled "THIS IS NEW YORK, 1968-2008, the 196 Cultural Works that Best Defined the City Since This Magazine Started"
The Beastie Boys are on the list of course! Not in '86 but in 1989 for Paul's Boutique.
The blurb: "In which they proved that they were real New Yorkers, not frat boys. From the cover photo shoot at the corner of Ludlow and Rivington to the 4 a.m. Subway ride to Coney Island in "Stop That Train," their greatest album is also their most local."
Nice. (y)
(edit: in case u are curious, no photo. music photos went to public enemy as the header, then patti smith & madonna. i'll take it.)

yeah, it's a pretty good list overall.
ok, here's the whole music list:
in chrono order: velvet underground, patti smith, the ramones, television, suicide, blondie, wiliie colon-ruben blades, chic, brian eno's no new york new wave compilation of 78, instant funk, talking heads (again with brian eno for remain in the light -- interesting pick, for its use of nyc's world music), the fellies, the wild style soundtrack ((y)), madonna's debut, ramelzee vs. k-rob in '83 (called "invention of indie hip hop 10 yrs before its time"), run dmc, arthur russell, sonic youth . . . then it's all hip hop from 89-94 with beasties, public enemy (for fear of a black planet (y)), wu-tang, nas, and biggie's ready to die . nothing for 5 years, then magnetic fields in 99 . . .
then they aptly title the next section "the argument starter" -- moby in 99 , the (sigh, say it with me) strokes in 2001, jay-z for blueprint in 01 (they argue his "late-period commercial peak" is "more adventurous" than reasonable doubt). the list ends in 2005 with LCD sound system ("ex-rock dude james murphy made it fun to dance in new york again").
definitely pick up the issue, it's a keeper and the oh-shit!!! headline of the knicks article alone is worth the price of admission.
i think i may go for a run to marquee moon now.

the irony of which has been noted and referenced by fans, critics and the band themselves over the years.
