Last week I had the pleasure of taking a week to relax in Miami's beautiful south beach. My hotel, the Royal Palm, quite literally, sucked.
I found a pillow in my room that looked like it had blood on it. No big deal, I threw it in a corner and went to sleep.
The next day I woke up with tons of tiny reddish bumps all over me. Bed bugs. It itched like hell and kind of ruined my trip.
The bugs are harmless and do not transmit disease to humans. That's nice to know.
But for all you guys planning on traveling to the tropics, try to make sure your room doesn't have any bed bugs. Blood dropplets on sheets and pillows, as it turns out, is a clear sign that your room has bed bugs. Try to find tiny black drops on the headboard or mattress (that's bed bug poop.)
If anyone wants to lose some sleep, here's a national geographic video with some grewsome details;
