Last week I had the pleasure of taking a week to relax in Miami's beautiful south beach. My hotel, the Royal Palm, quite literally, sucked.
I found a pillow in my room that looked like it had blood on it. No big deal, I threw it in a corner and went to sleep.
The next day I woke up with tons of tiny reddish bumps all over me. Bed bugs. It itched like hell and kind of ruined my trip.
The bugs are harmless and do not transmit disease to humans. That's nice to know.
But for all you guys planning on traveling to the tropics, try to make sure your room doesn't have any bed bugs. Blood dropplets on sheets and pillows, as it turns out, is a clear sign that your room has bed bugs. Try to find tiny black drops on the headboard or mattress (that's bed bug poop.)
If anyone wants to lose some sleep, here's a national geographic video with some grewsome details;

did you at least get the room for free after that?
i remember one time at a sleepover when i was a kid. we had the box fan running in the window and there was a light right under the window for the yard. it was on for a few hours that night and all the bugs that were flocking around it ended up getting fanned into the room and so we had these half dead bugs crawling around in our sleeping bags

This was the first time I ever encountered those little bastards, so no, I didn't ask to get the room for free because I didn't know what I was dealing with. I thought they might be a rash from the lotion I was using.
Strangely enough I did use gold bond daily to deal with the itching.

dude, you need to demand your money back.
people have successfully sued hotels for this in the past and have been rewarded serious $$

You're right, I should. I'll look into it.
Can you guys help me compose an email message, before I call them?

you should have taken pictures of the bloody pillow and the welts...
or at least made a formal complaint.
it might be difficult...
but what the fuck?

i so wish i were a proper lawyer right now, i would totally handle this for you (for an assload of money, obviously)
as it is though it would be unethical for me to help out, which works pretty well for me because i'm lazy as hell

the hotel needs to remove the mattress and fumigate the room.
you must spread the word...
