yes, i think they make a small cut in your gum to get to the tooth. the ex's brother had something similar done. so they get to it through the gum tissue and may have to remove what's left of your tooth in chunks with a drill/chisel etc. it depends how far they have to dig to get there i guess - you may need stitches. don't worry, you'll be anaesthetised anyway, so it shouldn't be unbearable.

diana/queen adrock used to work as a dental nurse, i think she'd know more about this.

good luck!

Is it root canal surgery you are having? If so, it's not that bad. Honest.

When i had to have mine it took the dentist 2 hours and my jaw was clamped open...leaving me with lockjaw for the next few days but that was it. The actual surgery wasn't too bad.

Most likely since your tooth is broken, the dentist will cut your gum down by the broken tooth. Then he/she will have enough of an opening to grab some part of the left over tooth. Usually they clamp some tool to the tooth and crank it out. No pain at all. At least there wasn't for me when I had it done. If there is broken bits (like in a impacted wisdom tooth) usually a surgeon takes care of that, and it's not a big deal either. There might be a little soreness by the gum, but a little Tylenol takes care of that.

Don't believe any of them, Randetica! This is one of the most problematic, painful procedures you can have. Even though you're probably going
to be anesthetized, there's a good chance that nerves will be exposed and struck -- searing right-behind-the-eyes sort of pain. And there's
an excellent chance that your gums will get infected, which is painful, and even if you don't get lockjaw from it, affects all chewing and speaking.
EVERYTHING becomes painful; it's really awful. It also fucks with your gas mileage, and your ceiling is more likely to fall on your head, which
hurts a lot, too. Most of your pets will go blind and your refrigerator will probably develop this weird, annoying hum (65% chance). It's awful.

I had a bad cavity that I purposefully chewed away over the years with bubblegum. That's kinda disgusting, but whatever.

When I went to the dentist recently, they scared me into thinking it'd be this horrible procedure. There were little bits left of the tooth. But my gum sort of looked like a crater where the WHOLE tooth once was? It honestly did NOT hurt. Granted, they shot me up beforehand. But all I could really feel was this pulling sensation 'case you're scared.

I got a broken tooth pulled last year. It didn't hurt, it was just uncomfortable. They yanked and yanked at it and there was blood everywhere, but everything was numb.

I kept expecting there to be a lot of pain, but there really wasn't too much at all. It was just really awkward to drink and eat things for about a week. then a big bloody clot popped out and I thought I was dying, but apparently that's normal.

I was supposed to go back and get a tooth implant, but I decided to wait.

the needle was scary, especially since they kept having to inject me because I kept saying I could feel my face. they shot me like 5 times. it didn't hurt though, just felt weird.

they put a cape thing on me, so blood didn't get on me really. but two people worked on me and my mouth was cranked open and their hands were all bloody and when I finally sit up and saw all the blood, it was sick. They put a folded up piece of wet gauze in the hole and I had to keep it in there for awhile. It bled a lot, but I got used to it. it's not like it was gushing.

oh yeah, and it also smells really bad until the clot pops out. like rotting flesh. (y)

great!

could you even walk afterwards? because of the blood loss i mean

it's gonna be a shitty time cause im still some ill, i might get my period soon and in already two weeks the next tooth gets pulled

take care of your teeth, kids!

Dorothy Wood
05-04-2008, 04:55 PM
yeah, I could walk, I was just a little out of it. I was pretty much just happy to have it taken care of. the pain was way less than the toothache I had when the tooth was in there anyway.

It's not a root canal since they perform those in order to save the tooth. The root of the tooth is still good, just the top is rotten, so they'll remove the nerve in the tooth (making it "dead") and put a crown on top - the still-healthy roots will hold the crown in place as a fake tooth. If he's removing the tooth altogether (which you've said he's planning on doing), he's going to have to expose the roots a little bit, probably by cutting a little. Not deep, just enough to expose them, grab them, and pull them out. I'm assuming he's going to give you a ton of shots because if he was to put you under he should have told you previously since you're not supposed to eat/drink within 12 hours of the surgery.

I can't say I'm speaking from experience, but the patients I've had say that they don't feel pain during the surgery, they just feel a bit of discomfort. If you feel pain, tell him right away so he can give you more shots. It'll probably ache once the shots wear off afterwards though, so ask him for happy pills like Valium. (y)

Oh and Nastee, not a dental nurse, just a secretary for 4 years. I was just nosy and asked a lot of questions. :o

Lyman Zerga
05-05-2008, 10:04 AM
thanks!

it got done like a few hours ago but im still bleeding/feeling dizzy but the numbness mostly fucked off now

well he gave me 4 shots and he tried for about 15 minutes to pull the tooth
most of the time i had my eyes closed and hoped that he would somehow manage to get it pulled out cause it still seemed way better than getting a surgery but it felt like not even schwarzenegger could pull it out
then some later i open my eyes and see his bloody hands and how he gives me THE stitches! which was kinda cool to watch
he totally had to split the whole tooth!

the (angry) pulling was definitely more feelable than the knifing and stiching and now i have to take penicillin twice a day and eat painkillers like candy
and i already ate some liquid "food"

all in all it's nothing i want to get everyday but it's take-able ASlong as you dont run out of painkillers!
