So I just went to the bank across the street a few minutes ago and as I reached the door, there was woman coming out. Older-ish, not like elderly, but like late 50s, early 60s. She seemed like she was pushing pretty hard at the door, which she'd partly opened, so I reached forward and pulled the door the rest of the way, trying to be helpful. And it was a pretty stiff door, I have to say. So I hold it while she comes out and as she does I smile politely at her, then move to go in and she gives me this really dirty look and says sarcastically "You're welcome" and walks away. I just stood there for a second, I was shocked!

What the fuck happened there?

You're lucky.

Round here, if you hold open a door for somebody, they shout "poof" at you and run after you with machetes and imitation staffordshire bull terriers.

ha ha, that's dumb. I can't even figure out where'd she'd be coming from.

I hate it when people get indignant for no reason.

this isn't really the same, but the other day, I had closed up the store that I work at and turned off all the lights. it was well after our posted hours, and I was on my way out, so the door was unlocked. a young couple was looking at the window display, then opened the door. I had my coat on and was like, "oh, I'm sorry, we're actually closed, but did you have any questions?" and the chick was like, "WELL YOU SHOULD LOCK THE DOOR THEN!" and took off in a huff. the dude stayed and asked me a question, I answered and said, "sorry! have a good night!" as he left.

I mean, the lights were off. it was dark in there. you made a mistake, no need to get hysterical. weirdos.

oh god. I wanna punch people like that in the face. they seem like a great target for all my repressed anger....

but repressed anger is probably the reason cunts say things like that in the first place.

What bugs me is when you're holding a door open for someone and, as they pass through, they put their hand out on the door to hold it open.

Like -- what? -- this is a set-up, and I'm going to slam it on your face?

i do that all the time. it's not like i'm expecting them to drop the door in my face, it's more like "thanks, i can take it from here" as opposed to "i appreciate you holding the door for me, please continue to hold it as i take my time passing through without making an effort to continue to hold the door open myself, i'm above you enough such that you should be expected to do so"

i think it would actually be a little more rude NOT to do it, actually

That's exactly what I think.

It might be an issue of sex or age too. If an older guy is holding the door open for me, I am less likely to put my hand on the door and I'll say thanks and breeze on by because he might enjoy being a gentleman. If a woman my age is holding it open, I'm definitely thinking "thanks, I can take it from here."

come to think of it, i generally come to expect people to put their hand out and hold the door open for themselves when they reach as i'm holding the door for them. if someone ever decided not to, i'd probably end up letting go and slamming the door in their face, just because i wouldn't be expecting them not to put their hand out.

and they'd deserve it, the presumptuous bastards

I got one!
I was outside closing up the store, these two men get out of a truck and start to walk towards the door. So I holler, "Hey, the store's closed." One guy says, "Do they sell cigarettes?" So I don't know if he thinks I can sell him cigarettes after closing or what, so I say, "Normally, yes, but it's closed." So he says, "You don't have to be a smartass." Then he looks at his buddy and says, "Come on. We're leaving." As if they have a choice but to leave because...wait for it...

THE STORE IS CLOSED!

It depends on body language.

If I'm going through, I'll hold the door open for the person right behind me, but my back is still turned to them, and I'm looking over
my shoulder to make sure they've got it.

If I'm holding the door open for someone, I've stopped, I'm holding the door facing them, usually with my foot braced against the
bottom of the door. That's a completely different thing. Sometimes I'll add a little arm sweep or a hand gesture that says "pass on
through!" And it's when I'm blatantly offering someone a courtesy and they put their hand on the door anyway that my mood is
shattered and I spit in their coffee if I can.

i love it when a man holds the door open for me. if he's cute i'll wink while saying thanks and shake my booty a bit more than i usually do as i walk away.

I hadn't talked to mr.p for a few days and I was just on the phone with him and told him about the door thing. He said "Honey, you know how it is - sometimes bitches just be crazy."
