19. Been driving for just under a year, it was my third time taking it. The other two times I caught some tough breaks, one time it was bad luck and the other time it was a pretty minor mistake they failed me for. It's about fuckin' time I passed.
Well done paddy lad, are you going to get a little run about to start you off? My first one was a little mini almost tens years ago.

congratulations. also, i had no idea you were that young.
my parents made sure i started learning right when i hit 17 - because they were of the belief if i didn't do it then, i would never do it. and they were probably right. i wouldn't have learned in glasgow that's for sure. i have no need for a car and would stress out in this city.
i passed my driving test on september 11, 2001. so it's pretty easy to remember.
i also have some advanced driving course certification. i took it because i was shit scared at driving in cities and then i was being considered for runner jobs in film/tv - the prospect of killing actors as you picked them up from the airport didn't really appeal. so i paid for the pass plus course, which also teaches you more about driving in bad weather conditions and on dual carriageways and motorways and blaarrgghhh. apparently i would get some money off insurance if i actually had a car. waste of time though. never got more runner jobs, and have never owned a car.
where i learnt to drive (the isle of lewis) there are no motorways, no dual carriageways. nothing. just lots of long, straight road. i think it's dangerous to give kids their driver's licence when they haven't had experience of any sort of vaguely urban environment. a roundabout is pretty advanced on lewis.
i passed my test first time but i still went down the wrong way down a one way street once. i just thought how i could get from a to b as a pedestrian and ploughed the car through it. i also had a seriously traumatic over-taking-near-approaching-blind-spot experience. i was a shit driver. hence me taking the advanced course so i could be safer.
not surprisingly, there are a lot of boy racers back home and about three of my (very small) graduating year have died in car accidents back there already.
erm, didn't mean to bring down the celebratory mood yo.

noooo! we were country bumpkins with nout to do other than speed along big empty island roads.
you learnt in a city. and you passed the third time, so that makes you a better driver. apparently. that's what people say to all the drivers who don't pass first time at least ; )

Sick.
Congratulations, tis one of the best feelings ever. when i passed two years ago, i couldnt stop smiling for days. My old fart advice would be to take it steady for a few weeks, dont go driving miles away for a bit but have a go on the motorway asap so you dont develop the fear! My sister has been drivin for 10 years and only just started going on motorways cos she was shit scared.
congratulations. also, i had no idea you were that young.
Are you suggesting that Padster's previous posts show maturity beyond his years?:p

Hmm, country bumpkin eh? Better driver you say? Sounds like a wiley ploy to gain forgiveness.
OK cool, no qualms dood.

how many minor faults did you get?
Lex Diamonds
04-17-2008, 08:48 AM
8, which isn't great, but not as bad as many people I know. They were nearly all observation, probably coming from the fact I'm lazy and smoke too much weed.

thats not bad - i think you are allowed about 12. my driving test was awesome, most of it took place on the road where i live which is where i had driven most - got very lucky!
Mate, dont worry about not seeing everything, there are some proper mister magoo's out there!

What the crap are motorways or carriageways?
And why is everyone in Europe so scared to drive on them?

Congrats and make sure to get a six figure job to pay for the gasoline.
I can still remember my drivers ed teacher's name. Sam Mitchell....he had a really long grey beard and was a very quiet man. We used to call him Silent Sam. He was a great teacher and because of him I am among the greatest parallel parkers in the entire world. He would put an egg in a small circular holder on the dashboard along with a cup of water or coffee. He did not want either to slide and he had a braking system on his passenger side of the vehicle. He had no problem slamming the brakes if you were out of line. I can remember going down a neighborhood hill and he reached over and yanked the key out of the ignition and I freaked. He told me that he wanted me to see how it was to maneuver the car without power steering.
Sam taught me well and I will always remember how dedicated he was to having you become a good solid defensive driver.

Congrats padster. Just a tip that's saved my ass countless times. Never concentrate on the person in front of you. Always try and look as far ahead as possible. Know what the car, in front of the car in front of you is doing. Always look down the road for trouble or sketchy situations. If you can do that, you'll never be the one ramming somebody from behind.
That didn't sound right.

actually, i have done that TWICE.
/waves back. Yup, i've done that. And guess what was coming the other (right!) way. A police car. They laughed as it dawned on me what i had done and laughed even more as i became increasingly flustered trying to do a 59 point turn on the narrowest road known to man.

bahahah! that's great.
when i was going down, i was like hey.. everyone's waving at me! awh! oh, islanders. they are so nice and amiable. sigh. /waves back.
nah, they were waving at the fucktard going the wrong way down a one way street. even worse was the fact that at the end to get the fuck out of it and onto a normal road i had to drive half on some pavement-half off. A PAVEMENT WITH PEDESTRIANS. that was pretty bad. uh, woops.

Soz cam, nah I can't afford a car at the moment but til I get one I'm cruising in my marjorie's VW Golf Estate. It's not bad, I took that motherfucker for a spin today and burnt up tyres.
Anyway, I can't believe so many of you care about this shit. This board just can't get enough of me.

Congrats.
I sorta cheated on my test & got my pass after 8 lessons. Woo. My instructor took me to a country town to sit my test, it was a given I'd pass it.
I was so nervous I forgot to start the car before I put it in drive, the tester fell asleep halfway through and snored in the back seat as my instructor gave me instructions on how to complete my parking manouvre. I also drove on the wrong side of the road for a short time. I think I lost 2 points in total...
...for not checking my mirrors frequently enough. Eh.
I did a defensive driving course a few years ago and loved it, smashing through cones and braking hard and trying to control your car when it has no ABS (y)
