So after getting some generic advice, I've started to narrow down my ring selection. I'm also working on designing my own sort of antique victorian style ring for them to cast.

Here's what I've got so far (it's a work in progress). If you can find any really sweet old rings or filigree designs etc. I'd really appreciate the help!

I think you should use jpg instead of png if you want everyone to see it.

Start visiting antique malls and flea markets in your area. Vintage/antique diamond rings are a dime a dozen in that market.

I fucking hate diamonds and would only ever wear one or want to be given one if it was in this style and was a genuine antique. It's the best way to go for sure.

I don't know, I just don't like them. They all look the same and they're too predictable. Not to mention the whole mining thing.

Thanks DDD!!

Yeah, I feel kind of the same about diamonds to be honest. I think they're a pile of crap. I'm getting one that looks good, but not buying the ULTRA EXTREME CLARITY MAXIMUM BRILLIANCE INSANE-O CUT type. My fiancee feels the same, so it makes it easier to get a reasonable diamond.

I'd rather get a ruby or maybe an emerald, but people just don't expect that from an engagement ring. Plus they aren't color neutral so it might look weird if you were wearing an outfit that clashed.

(sorry about posting the png - I'll update with a jpg when I've worked on it more)

ps. if no one cares about this crap just tell me, I'm not trying to be an attention whore

Those rings are beautiful. If you score something like that she's a lucky girl.

those rings with the stones all around are uncomfortable to wear. and no offense, but that blue and white one is oldladyville.

My friend found her ring on ebay, and it's yellow sapphire from the 1920's and looks similar to the one crystal posted. it was like 300 bucks. she's practical, dude makes a good salary, but she'd rather put money towards a house. they thought it was funny to get it on ebay because they met on myspace. ha.

I also dislike diamonds. here's the engagement ring I want! it looks haunted!

Made some progress, but it's still not done. I have to design the top of the band still and work on the prongs and stuff. The side in this picture is being modeled at the jeweler already!

i dont know if this is of concern on your part, but if i were you, i'd get the ring done with 18k+white gold. it's a little softer metal, the ring will mold to your lady's finger after wearing it for a bit, but it wont degrade as easily as 14k. and the color is a little more attractive. plus, its value is bound to rise, esp. the purer the gold.

Yeah, I'd considered the 18ct gold first. Some reasons why I'm going with 14ct include the cost of custom casting 14ct is drastically different (and easier I was told). The 14ct color looks good with a design like this (I think) and a lot of the ones my fiancee showed me were closer to that color. The way I understand it, 14ct will be a little bit more durable too.

As far as the ring's value - I think she couldn't care less. I'm just paying what I am paying to get something that looks nice, trying to avoid the status symbol aspect of it.

That is amazing. Is it a moonstone? Opal? I love it.

Unfortunately I just found it on some dude's nerdy blog about macro photography. It's his grandmother's. he doesn't say much else about it. http://www.baldheretic.com/category/photography/macro
