The critics are not lying when they say it's the best movie ever made. I don't think I've ever been so impressed by a film's cinematography, made even more amazing by the fact that it was produced almost 70 years ago. This is one everyone should see at least once in his or her lifetime. Seriously.
On another note, Thank You For Smoking is a piece of shit and I'm sorry I trusted the opinions of all the internet dorks who say it's awesome.

I still haven't seen Citizen Kane. but I agree that Thank You for Smoking is garbage.
I don't even remember anything about it actually. except that Maria Bello is in it. and I hate her. she ruins every movie I see her in.

i absolutely, positively, completely, and utterly LOVE citizen kane. i once had a chick tell me that i take myself too seriously, and her "proof" was that my favorite movie is a "stuffy old movie" like citizen kane. i dont know why that would be at all relevant. but i do love citizen kane.
it's a brilliant fucking film! and orson welles is an incredibly sexy man.

Citizen Kane is good stuff. Though the critics who say it's the greatest movie ever made obviously have not seen the films of Kurosawa, Murnau, Lang, Tarkovsky, or anything else Orson Welles has ever directed.
Yeah, film snobbery ftw.
Also, the fact that the ending of Citizen Kane has become a part of pop culture kind of lessens the films overall impact nowadays, since most people who haven't seen it already know how it's going to end.
My film teacher hates Citizen Kane, but I still maintain that it's a pretty good flick, though slightly overrated. It's interesting to see an American interpretation of expressionism.

I noticed all these different lines from it that are used in some White Stripes song and all I could think was "wow Jack White is a pretentious fag".
Its probably more relevant today than it was 65 years ago.

It is a great movie, the style of cinematography is so innovative sometimes I wonder why it's taking so long for Hollywood to catch up. The soundtrack, if I remember right, was very foreboding and dark, it would be cool to update it with maybe Phil Collins or Elton John... maybe even Randy Newman as long as he doesn't get to tongue in cheek.

Goddamn It: What the hell is it with the idolatry of Phil Collins? Peter Gabriel owns his ass 6 ways from Sunday. The only thing Phil ever did right was put his publishing in his son or daughters name: That took a little bit of brains and I'm betting the ranch that his accountant told him that trick.
But Phil Collins Sucks Cack at Rest Areas for Free. If I had a time machine I'd rid the world of Phil Collins: Face it he Sucks.

Great film! I took a history of cinema class in college that ended at Cane. It was interesting to see it with an expert (I'd usually put that shit in quotes except that this guy was the real McCoy). Besides the genius of the script and structure (so much so that it is all cliche today because how oft copied it is). A lot of its true genius was in the cinematography of it- not just the artistic bit either, but Wells literally had to invent new ways of using a camera to film the shots he wanted! The very famous shot of Wells giving a speech in front of an enormous hanging poster of himself was impossible to film at the time and have the whole frame be in focus- the lens didn't exist to do that! Its a camera trick that he came up with to pull off that shot! A lot of the genius of that movie is as much about his genius. my 2 cents.

I've always heard about it but never seen it.
Will I enjoy it if I see it and have no idea what will happen going in?

God, I'd love to be in your shoes, Jitters.
Though it seems like a lot of younger people think it's slow and boring, which kills me. It's one of the most entertaining, breakneck movies
I've ever seen.
When I was in our band, our guitarist saw it for the first time, having avoided it because of its rep. He loved it, but what I really liked was
he said "You could pause it and any frame would make a great album cover."
Which is pretty much true.
Awesome sound design, too.
It ain't perfect, but it's so great that its flaws are entirely forgivable.
Oh -- and Roger Ebert's commentary on the DVD is one of the best I've ever heard. I learned shit I didn't know, and I've studied that movie
for decades now.

I think I'll rent it next week and check it out. I always try and go see as many older movies as I can and it's pretty bad that I haven't seen Kane yet.

glad for you, DDDive. Now you can join the film cult like a-z and some of us.
NOT to change the subject, but I saw IKIRU this weekend for the first time- and i've been a psycho film buff for a solid 20 years, so that's pretty late- and i'm feeling a bit like you are.
it's amazing, it's ART, i guess that's all there is to say about it (for both flicks). anything that can blow you away with its combo of lighting, timing, music, words, pauses, visuals, plot, acting,....... so much.
sad for those who don't get it. really, good for you! (y)

If I'm going to watch an Orson Welles movie it's going to be Touch of Evil. God, I love that movie, more so than Citizen Kane.

great movie!
GREAT opening shot, that huge pan across whatever that border town is. only bad thing is the cheese of Charlton Heston in brown face.

No doubt in the new one the would have had Unicron transform into a basketball court or something.
