Why is drinking on your whistle stops considered a good thing?

I mean, I understand the "ordinary Joe" thing (though who really wants an "ordinary Joe" for President!?), but... this just seems weird.

i cannot vote for a man who knowingly drinks pabst when he can obviously afford to drink a beer that won't wear a hole in his stomach. its these small things that show us just really how good a man's judgement is
