we're short staffed at the moment, so I work alone a lot. it's fun that way sometimes, but it gets old. I have a lot of opportunities to express creativity. I like my coworkers, though they are really burned out. I'm more positive I guess because where I used to work was hell on earth.

I just wish I made more money.

aw geez. i'm too tired to elaborate on this at the moment, but through a variety of bbmb search terms a while ago i came to a post your very boyfriend made on his philosophy of careers somehow and then created an enormous myspace message entitled 'do we work to live, or live to work?' a couple of months back. which i have since edited to.. oh, about six words. it's difficult.

what do you think, triple dee?

what do you think, triple dee?

I fall somewhere between "It pays the bills but pretty much sucks" and "I fucking hate it."

I have major workaholic tendencies, mostly because I have an obsessive personality. I eventually end up despising every job I take because to this point, none of them have fulfilled my creative interests, but instead of either fulfilling said interests outside of work, or pursuing those interests as a career, I obsess over my current work situation to the point that I end up hating it. It's a pattern that I really need to break.

So to answer your question, it's not a bad job, but it's not for me and I'm growing restless...

I hate the sitting portion of my job because its made my weight jump about 10 pounds from where im used to being.

but every other portion rules. Im already in a management position, Im a female in a male-dominated industry which gives me lots of special attention, my boss loves me and gives me lots of bonuses/perks, shes paying for me to take further training via correspondance, I get paid an excellent wage in comparison what I might get in a bigger city, I can get as much overtime as I possibley want, and I have a pretty great future ahead of me.

only downside is that the job is in my hometown so It would have been nice to get a chance to live elsewhere. but if it aint broke, why fix it. though i like living here because it lets me stay close to my parents (which will be a big advantage once they start getting on in years and Ill be able to be aroundt o help them out)
plus my boss gives me tons of time to take vacations and urges travel. so Im pretty content.
I counted it up and I took about 10 weeks of vacation time last year.
I dont know many other jobs where your boss basically forces you to take a month off a year just to prevent burnout syndrome etc.

at this very moment: i fuckin hate it

generally speaking: its not so bad

pros: small company with laid back atmosphere, lets me get a wide variety of experience that most people don't get, and the work we do is more or less all of the things i thought i would like to do

cons: pay is a little under average, and times like now, i get put on these awful field assignments that are only fun for a week or two and really suck when nothing is actually happening.

in the past 2 days, i have actually completed about 2 hours worth of actual work, and i have put in 24. its boring as hell and i come home every night completely exhausted. if i could get back to a regular 8 hour a day schedule, i would be happy

I like my job. I'd rather be a stunt man, but this will do for now.

I can pick my own schedule, so that's cool. And I never have to ask anyone for a raise. I just need to work harder to get more accounts.

So, the sky is the limit.

Pretty cool. Better than diggin a ditch.

Its funny I was thinking about this today. When I started a new job a few months ago I was convinced it was the greatest job I ever had because it was easy to do well which is a nice feeling to have most days and it didn't feel like I was bad person if I didn't do my job perfectly, or even more good than bad (which I'll give you is crazy- but I felt that way A LOT over the 5 years I was a teacher). It also pays fairly well and I'm mostly my own boss, or at least I am out of the office all day on my own- so it feels like it (a lot less lately though!).
I think I am beginning to be a little less enamored with it recently though, which got me thinking, damn that was quick! I guess I still am fairly happy on the day to day and not miserable and since I know what thats like I'm happy for the change. Its nice to feel like the fate of the world doesn't hinge on my job anymore, but in a weird way I sort of miss the feeling of being connected to something that felt important- all I certainly don't miss anything else about it- especially doing that job! Anyway I guess I'm just adapting to having my job be something I do that doesn't particularilly define my existence, which is one of the things that was most appealing about it originally, but its like I've lost a limb- I keep thinking somethings missing. Didn't mean to get that into my head, but wtf, right?

i am an intern for an appeals court judge and apart from not getting paid it's a pretty cool job. i get to do all the fun of legal writing without any of the hassle of legal research (the briefs submitted by the parties basically frame the issues and point you towards all the cases and statutes you need, even if they're regularly somewhat inadequate and you need to do a little more research yourself to get the full picture) and i get to fuck people over by judging them, i could see doing this again for money in the future

I chose the second one.

I'm a CSR, CS manager, graphic designer and IT gal where I work- 'cause it's for a really small company that's becoming more-and-more popular by the day but the majority of people who work there now are dumb and have no clue what to do with some stuff.

I make decent $$ $ for someone my age. Designed a t-shirt, coloring book, blabla.. I'm bragging, but it feels pretty good. Right now we're going through some hard times though, so everything's all chaotic and dramatical in the office.

starting pay is great but there's really no raises or chance for advancements.

Easy work.

But now we're understaffed. They don't want to hire new people and all of the sudden decide to do what the hell they want with my work schedule.

I made plans with the wife for the weekend and I got a call yesterday, "you're working this weekend"

I'm pretty pissed.

On the whole, I love it. I enjoy the nature of the work, the people and the responsibility. As a contractor I don't have to get caught up in all the political crap. I have a great team working with me and I get paid very well. And I get to do a little bit of travelling which I always love. (y)

Only downside is the commute but I live with it (well, apart from when Polish lorry drivers decide to sideswipe me on the M25)

I drive around all day servicing slot machines.

Pros - I get paid to visit pubs and drink coffee, I get a free company car and phone, I'm not in an office, if there is no service calls my time is my own. Day goes quicker because Im not stuck in the same place all day. I work 4 days on 4 days off, ( 12 hour shifts) and for working that shift I get paid an extra 7K a year and get 5 weeks annual leave. so im really only working half the time, even though it adds up to more hours a month than a 9 to fiver.

Cons - getting abused by gambling addicts because they have lost all their money. Regularly threatened with violence. Drinking poorly made coffee. Putting on weight because I do sweet fuck all.

Today I started at 8am (its now 641pm) and I have not received 1 single service call. (That is rare tho) I have done shopping, visited friends, napped in my car under a tree, now I'm home playing PS3 and getting paid.

Could be worse.

same here sort of. i signed up for a regular old engineering desk job with the potential to do some spotty field work when an extra guy is needed. now i ended up with this shitty lab tech assignment that runs 60 hours a week and i have to do the night shift for the next 2 weeks.

about 8am this morning the heading engineer for my part of the job comes in and asks me if i am available this weekend. first i told him "no sunday, but i dont know for tomorrow". but when he came back at 11ish i told him not at all. maybe i'm the only one who actually tries to have a life here, but who the hell is really going to volunteer to work 24 hours over the weekend on less than 24 hours notice? sure, the money would be great, but that would mean you'd have to work 12 days straight doing 12 hour shifts. ridiculous!

i want a job that pays me half well, values professional development and training while challenging you academically and creatively, has generous annual leave entitlements and has opportunities to work abroad. EDIT: oh yeah, and a good pension.

my job at the moment doesn't really provide me with any of this. ha. no shit! that's the perfect job i described there.. does it exist?

i am seriously thinking about doing a graduate law degree/entering a marketing+advertising faststeam just so i can tick some of those boxes. even though i have no idea if it's what i want to do. humm.

Now I am one, I intend to make the most of it.

I work as a project manager in a company that among other things builds websites for advertising campaigns.

I love doing what I do but because we are currently understaffed it has been hell lately (I worked until 05:00 A.M. last night).

They know about the workload and are doing what they can to fix it (we're getting a new project manager on the 18th) but it still sucks.

Bottom line: Love the job, hate the current workload.
