So I need a new hairdryer and there's this beauty supply place right across the street from my work. So on Friday I decide to check it out. On the door is stop-sign shaped placard that says something like "We only sell to licensed professionals" and I'm like, what? I've never heard of that before. Why can't I just buy something?
So I go in anyway and the lady asks if she can help me. I say I'm looking for a hairdryer and she says "are you licensed?" I'm like, no, and she asks me to leave. I was like, "I can't just buy a hair dryer that you have sitting here on the shelf?" She says "No, you have to be licensed that's what the sign on the door means."
I knew that but I just had to go in. Just to express my indignation and somehow show them that I think their policy is stupid.
Passive aggressive.
Yeah, my fiancee deals with that. She had to get a special student license while she was in beauty school to be able to get stuff from that kind of place. I guess you have to know what you're doing to use that stuff, professional grade cosmetology supplies.
It's weird, I know - I guess the licensed beauticians satisfy some liability or something.

it's the place that they buy stuff for wholesale and then mark it up at the salons to sell, so they don't want everyone in there getting the good deals.
i got a card for our local one when i worked for a salon last year.
i never gave it back. :D

Huh...once I tried to buy a pair of professional barbers clippers and my man reacted like I'd broken some kind of cardinal sin..."Noooooooo,we only sell inside the trade"....

yeah, what waus and aceface said.
that sort of thing happens with any profession. it's like at my job, we have companies that we buy completely benign things from, but we also buy tools or chemicals that should only be used by a professional. not exactly the same thing, but same idea.
I like going to Sally Beauty Supply with my mom though (she's licensed), because she gets a lower secret price. I suppose I've only been to a "licensed only" shop a few times, there aren't too many of them.
I kind of feel bad for the people who just want a really nice pair of clippers or something, but at the same time I know the shitload of money and effort that went into becoming a licensed beautician.
So...to have someone do it from home while someone else has to pay for a year or two of schooling, a license, and a state board exam to get approved to buy and use those things commercially - I just don't have a problem with them only selling to pros anymore.

Yeah, I guess I can see how if their products are professional grade it would be important to regulate their use.
I was just being a bitch.

just because someone owns a professional grade supply doesnt mean they will be professional grade results
i mean, i wouldnt trust my mom to cut my hair even if she had the best pair of clippers in the world!
