So I bombed my college Math placement test and had to start back at Math 20, I recently did a quiz and got a surprisingly good grade on it, but we're given the opportunity to correct our mistakes and turn them in for extra credit. I think I have these bitches figured out, but BBMB Rain Men/Women help a brotha out!
Which is larger... 0.7346 or 0.73412
Round 0.248 to the nearest hundredth...
Round 32,561.47 to the nearest hundredth and thousandth. (There's a horizontal line sitting atop the 47)
Write a decimal notation for 52/8

Which is larger... 0.7346 > 0.73412
Round 0.248 to the nearest hundredth... 0.25
Round 32,561.47 to the nearest hundredth and thousandth. (There's a horizontal line sitting atop the 47) 32,561.47 , 32,561.475
Write a decimal notation for 52/8 6.5
Is this seriously math 20?
.7346
.25
32,561.47 and 32,561.475
6.5
I'm no math wizard either, but I think those are right.

I haven't taken a math class of any kind in about 10 years, but I serously feel like those are questions I had in my 7th grade Math class.

Yeah, it's all middle school stuff. I got a 29% percent on the math portion of the placement test, so I got stuck in Math 20. But this is credit toward the final grade, so I've got double triple check everything...it's not often you get a second chance to take a test :D

That blows. That you got stuck in math 20. But hey, learn what you can, ask questions when you got em' and don't stress the small stuff. I'm an old pro at sucking at math. I know your pain. BTW, if you find Obiwan, tell him to get his ass back over to my place. I bombed my quiz in organic chemistry.

yeah...no offense DSR but if you're having trouble with these maybe a more advanced math class isn't a great idea
in retrospect i wish i'd taken a dive on my math placement tests in college and just taken the easy math classes. i do not foresee ever having to use anything more complex than basic algebra in my future (if something comes up i ought to have people to do that for me) and all those shitty grades i got in my college math classes did nothing but hurt me in the long run
.
32,561.47 and 32,561.475
wait, you and jackrock both had this, but that's not right, is it?
32,561.477777777777777777777etc is 32,561.48 and 32,561.478 rounded to the nearest hundredth and thousandth respectively, isn't it?

the line is over the 47.
32,561.4747474747...
See, I got the impression the line was over the 4 and the 7, making it .4747474747474...right? Shoot I dunno man, I quit doing excessive math when I got a B in college physics.
oh whoops, i read that wrong, i read it as being over the 7. I AM GOOD AT MATH AND I SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE GIVING ADVICE IN THIS THREAD

a lot of adults would surprisingly not know how to answer those. but they're pretty easy and it's unfortunate that people don't know how decimals work.
I don't tutor math anymore, I kind of miss it. :/ I'm kind of sad that I missed this thread and the questions were already answered. heh. :o

I was signing up for my college classes today and it reminded of how I did on the math section of my placement test which was, shall we say, not so good either.
I freaking aced the computer and literature section though. I only missed about two on each.

Indeed! Unfortunately for the degree I'm going for it requires some basic math classes...not quite sure how many more I need to take, but we'll see. On the plus side I just found out from my teacher I got an 85% on the last test and my overrall grade in the class is 95% (A).

Thanks desert :D
I am going for the Associates of General Studies degree...nothing very specific, it's kind of all encompassing. There were so many classes I was interested in this degree was something that I could umbrella them all under. For summer term I'm doing Spanish and Writing classes.

thats a good way to start, especially when you don't know exactly what you wanna do. I'm working on English Lit. I always wanted to be a high school English teacher. Its one of those things no one but the truly nerdy kids aspire to. (y)
I am absolutely horrible at math.
I thank my lucky stars for the verbal section of the SAT. I got an 1,100 and I got a 700 on the verbal. I think you get 300 pts on each section for just signing your name so I think I got 100 pts on the math portion.....400 total out of 800.

I've never used algebra 1 or 2 in my adult life (1 was okay; hated 2) but I loved geometry and did use it precisely one time: to put in a beach pier.
