Our two local reviewers have me confused. The super picky one said "The film isn't a travesty like Lucas' "Star Wars" prequels, but aside from a clever atomic test-site sequence, it's listless, low in energy and poorly paced." Hmm.
I'm looking forward to the Indy Lego games though. (y)

i will eeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkk as loud as possible if he does. and my poor husband will be embarrassed.
have tix to see it at 4:30 today. i'll report back.
I liked Last Crusade better than Raiders. I don't care what anybody says.
We had that in the movie cabinet when I was little, so it's probably just because of my familiarity with it. I think it has more charm.

If you honestly expect a 66 year old man to retain the same appearance and physique that he had in his late 30s/early 40s, you might as well just not bother going.

Saw it yesterday, loved it! After the Phantom Menace let down, I was expecting the worst...thankfully it turned out to be fantastic popcorn fun which is exactly what I wanted. Not as good as Raiders, but at least equal to Doom/Crusade in my humble opinion. And I thought Shia LaBouef fitted in well and maybe with a few more years on him could become the *new* Indiana as it were with Harrison Ford taking on the Connery type of role...

It fucking sucked and damn near ruined the whole series for me. There was way too much CGI and what made the older movies great was that so many of the effects were practical and despite the fact all of them had far out concepts, there was at least a part of you that thought it could happen.
But this movie has so much CGI and the weakest story out of the series, not to mention some truly horrid acting from Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett, who found a way to make Brigitte Nielsen's performance in Rocky 4 seem like the pinnacle of Ruski woman performances. Harrison Ford was just going through the motions because there was nothing around him that deserved a quality performance. Just some goddamn crystal skull that causes some alien thing to do some shit and a few CGI shots later the movie is over (pretty much all I can say without giving shit away).
It was nice to see Karen Allen back, yet the writing made her character so two dimensional and uninteresting you'd think they brought back Kate Capshaw. She did was she could but there was nothing there for her. The rest of the movie really is just a bunch of Russian guys holding guns and firing them like the A-Team. It's so poorly constructed and the action, albeit convincing at times, is painfully forced. You'll know why I say that when you see it, because when Shia LaBeouf makes eye contact with a monkey who then gets his comrades to swing through the jungle to attack the Russians, you'll realize you just saw the most retarded thing you've ever seen. Not retarded as in bad, but retarded as in a mentally handicapped child came up with the concept.
My biggest gripe, out of everything I've said thus far, is the fact this film was made in the first place. It was one of the greatest movie trilogies in the history of film, and rather than preserve it in the film vaults of our memory, Hollywood decided to shit on a series I hold near and dear to my heart with my adolescence. Finding the Holy Grail in the Last Crusade should have been the last crusade for the series because honestly, once you find the Holy Grail, YOU'VE FOUND THE FUCKING HOLY GRAIL! You can't top that shit, and some fucking crystal skull whose powers are poorly explained was a terrible choice to replace the grail.
It is hands down the worst of the series, and makes the Temple of Doom look like the Citizen Kane of the tetralogy. It's the worst film I've seen this year, but to be fair, I have not seen One Missed Call or Fool's Gold. I'm just talking about the films I'VE SEEN. I'm so disappointed and the fact I went with my dad who showed me the original three at such a young age and loved these movies made it all the worse. He loves these movies more than I do and he hated this movie more than I did, which is saying something significant. It sucks knowing the films my dad damn near raised me on got shit on by a scheme to scrounge millions out of the globes collective pocket without offering something in return.
If there is a God, there will be no part 5.

20 years ago their were plans for a 5th, there WILL be a fifth.
i just hope they dont do a bullshit fanboy move and have him in the classic role that everyone expected. If new age Nazis are there and they are digging up a Christian artifact, THAT will ruin the movie. I'm glad it deals with a different piece of the past. If it hadnt, it wouldnt have a point. itd just be a pretty version of the old ones.

Was it VERY silly and borderline ridiculous?
Oh hell yeah!
Was it fun and entertaining?
Again I say, hells the fuck yeah!
Now who's with me, it was a goddamn Indy flick!
(y)(y)
mmm i don't know what to say about it. it's good to see indy back in action but... yeah, adam_f pretty much hit the nail on the head. too many homages to the older series (like the new star wars), too much CGI, too much un-necessary...homo-ness (the gophers+monkeys...seriously, what the FUCK!), not enough story between marian and indy...
the ending was just... i dont want to accept that ending as part of "indiana jones" and it's legacy. absolute rubbish. i do understand that the stories behind a crystal skull do centre around sci-fi and aliens but they, surely, could have done something better about it.
the start (with the elvis and the drag race) was really cool; wonder who's idea that was and the diner brawl between the jocks and greasers was cool too.

completely agree with the mattcart idea. If you expected a "REAL" movie, you picked the wrong everything. Lucas makes fun shit, and Indy is a fun franchise. The gophers werent bad to me. the monkeys yeah. IMO he should have been scared of the monkeys (indy scared of snakes, dad scared of rats, him scared of monkeys, works well)
i have no problem with dumb action and all that. i never said i disliked the movie; i did like it.. there's way more positives than negatives. i've read alot of reviews saying 'if you're an indy fan, you'll love it; if not, it's pretty shit' basically, and they're absolutely right.

Nygel
05-25-2008, 11:30 AM
...when did that mental connection happen. was that when the monkeys scurried off and then he realized how to swing on things (dont act like swinging on vines is any less plausible than indy swinging from his whip at the start) and landed on the jeep then the monkeys followed (monkey see monkey do)

100% agreed
thing is I went in to it WITH LOW EXPECTATIONS. Seriously. REALLY LOW.
Part of the beauty of the original series too were the story lines. This one was just SO out there that it just got really ridiculous and completely, for the lack of a better word, stupid.
Once things got rolling towards the end about the skull, I felt like I was just watching George Lucas beat off being completely pleased with himself for going forward with that story line.
After the Star Wars prequels and now this, I want to stab him, repeatedly, in the face.

I really enjoyed it. It was very entertaining!
Was it perfect no? But neither were the other ones.
It did have problems, chiefly they showed too much. I had no problem with aliens, but it could have been implied instead of actually shown. Same with the spaceship...imply, not show. Leave it up to our imaginations.
As for anyone calling it outlandish or farfetched raiders features THE ARK OF THE COVENANT being opened and GHOSTS COMING OUT that cause NAZIS HEADS TO MELT. Remember that? Yes, that is as outlandish as aliens.
Also, two scenes could be cut definitely: the nuclear blast (which had no point) and the swinging through the vines scene.
Other than that, I had a blast. ENTERTAINMENT!

I really loved it...and being the little 4 or 5 year old that ran around the house with my dad's hat on my stick horse pretending to be Indy, I had some pretty high expectations. see I don't think the story line is too out there...but then I was already familiar the myths surrounding the real skulls.
we know very little about the real skulls (they do not look like the ones in the movie though). Researchers have widely debated whether the technology existed to create the skulls at the time they were thought to have been created. So there are theories that they were created by aliens. the crystal is the same crystal we now use in micro chips to store info...so it's also thought among some circles that if we find all the skulls and get them together, there will be some sort of information relayed to us...the most common speculations is that if they were made by aliens they will tell us how to keep from destroying ourselves and the earth.
I knew there would be aliens in the movie. not a shocker or Hollywood invention. but if you did'nt know that going into it, I'm thinking you'd probably say: "oh fuck no. another fucking alien plot."
gbsuey
05-26-2008, 04:29 AM
i had no idea there was an alien thing going on with this film before i read this thread so unless i'd read in a review or something i'd have gone into it unaware. but doubt if it would have surprised me too much-it's all well far-fetched anyway!!
i find it funny some folks are bemoaning some of the more ridiculous bits-considering some of the best-loved films ever are completely stoopid really. take E.T-when elliot and e.t take off on the bike-laughable, but it wouldn't be the same film without it. i just think sometimes things are taken too seriously-i'm guilty of it too tho'-i do ask the questions we're not suppose to

Well, I wound up seeing this.
It wasn't very good, but I don't think it was off-the-charts horrible or anything. Yeah, pretty stupid, but watchable. Maybe because
my expectations were dialed so far down.
I actually thought Shia was one of the best things in it. Not his character, but his acting. The guy was spontaneous and totally there.
Poor Karen Allen, though -- standing around with an inappropriate smile on her face half the time.
The most effective moment, to me, was the scorpions crawling up Mutt's leg and crotch -- God, I was wincing like crazy. But then that
got undercut later as he's swinging and all the plants are hitting him in the crotch... what had been effective once now suddenly became
pretty cheap, and you have to kind of wonder what Spielberg's issues are that he wants to keep doing that stuff...
The first 20-30 minutes of the movie were moving along just fine, I thought.

The blast scene was well made; Indy running around the model town was cool, and the shot of the mushroom cloud was amazing, I just thought it was kind of pointless.

That was way fucking off. He got going on the vines well after the cars had lost him, then he... catches up? You kidding me? A boy swinging
on vines can outrace automobiles?

i got to see it at the weekend and yeah it was all pretty ridiculous but i loved it!! the bit with the vines was pretty over the top but the most stupid bit for me was the pulling Indy and Marion out of the quicksand with a snake! surely it would snap or some shit like that. it kept three 7 year old boys quiet for two hours and that was cool with me

Maybe uh, maybe he swung straight to where the road had to bend around all those cliffs? Like, he took a more direct route?
I don't know man, I thought the vines bit was pretty outrageous too. ALIENS

That's fair.
Spielberg usually does a really great job with the geography of action, though...

SHIA LABEOUF HAD A MENTAL CONNECTION WITH A MONKEY WHO THEN ATTACKED THE RUSSIANS CHASING HIM!
WHAT IS ENTERTAINING ABOUT THAT?
This made me laugh almost as hard as I was laughing when this happened in the movie (and maybe a little more... thanks!)

Finally going to see it tonight. There were some spoilers in this thread, oh well, I would have found out in a few short hours anyway.
I'm still looking forward to it.

Indiana Jones and the Caddyshack of Bushwood.

oh that was the best bit in the whole movie. i laughed hard when the snake was right in his face. that's one thing h. ford does really well and that's getting shit scared with snakes.
there was an unprecedented level of colossal cheese, but i liked the area 51/aliens premise, and overall thought it was alright. too bad previous sidekicks sallah (john rhys-davies), marcus brody (denholm elliott r.i.p.), and sean connory weren't back, as shia labeouf was not an adequate sidekick at all, as usual playing yet another annoying teenager, but as the movie progressed he had fewer and fewer lines after his character was introduced. it was cool that karen allen was brought back, who i thought provided some good chemistry with ford. cate blanchett was an excellent villian. yeah, the vine sequence was atrocious.

my thoughts:
boring
awful CGI
goofy makeup on the monkey people they fought
shia is a good actor and hot
cate's accent was pretty bad, but I still liked her
weak storyline
nuclear bomb blast thing was kick ass
why do aliens always look the same in movies? ET was much more creative. also, I didn't like the sci-fi angle. I liked the more mystical ancient ghosty stuff of the prior movies. if you tell me the mystical ancient ghosty stuff is aliens, then it's no fun anymore.
I probably would've liked it better if it weren't about aliens. or if the aliens weren't computer generated.
