So my mate wants to have 10 bands to listen to to "sample" hip hop so to say. He wants to know where to start. OK I suggested:

Beastieboys
Tribe Called Quest
Fugees
Public Enemy
NWA
Eminem
De La Soul
Run DMC
Grandmaster Flash
Wu tan Clan

Any more suggestions to add?

I think trying to cram 30 years woth of Hip Hop history into 10 albums is fucking fugazi.

Slapping on a RUN-DMC or a PE album today isn't going to mean anything to someone who doesn't associate it with a moment in time when it was popular.
It's something you had to be apart of when it was popular.

My advice would be to just listen to whatever's current and start building your own relationship and history with the music.

I agree with ^^

If the kid in question is under 25 - I dont think using GMF, Run DMC, Biz, Eric B and Rakim is the right lever.

I'd go with some of the more recent, dope stuff like Blackalicious, Madlib Jaydee and MFDoom, and Boom Bap Project. Throw in the Dr Octagon album, Some De La, for a real taste of older stuff I'd use Ultramagnetic MC's "Critical Beatdown" and if they like that - try some Run DMC and PE.

I'll change my mind in a minute.....

I disagree. Current hip-hop is, for the most part, bland and uncreative. And underground hip-hop is the territory of people who already know their history. When I was around 14 a lot of people my age were into shit like Run-DMC, simple upbeat hip-hop that is still good, regardless of age.

Maybe anything from the Tommy Boy Hip Hop Essentials vol.1-12 list.

Complete List (http://www.funwadi.com/forum/tommy-boy-presents-hiphop-essentials-vol-1-12-1971-1991-t38956.html)

Here's volume 1 on allmusic.com, all 12 are on there:

Nah! Grandmaster rocks! The message is brilliant!

How can u say "Run DMC is from a time and a place and won't be enjoyed by people who wern't there"
Its good music, upbeat and exciting. Feels important now especially compared to many bland rappers who are popular. Anyway DMC are popular still.
Plus how can u say its about a time. As if any of the middle class white boys can identify with modern gangster rap anyway.
Music is music.

There are stuffy people saying "you can't enjoy 60's music properly unless you were there"
Then you get "you can't be a true punk cause you wern't there at the time, it was a moment an expirience. The music doesn't mean anything to you"
and now the same about hip hop?!?!?!

I hope i aint so snobbish about the music thats around now when i get to 35+

regardless of whether or not that's true, the message is probably still a really good song to show someone who's never really listened to rap before if you want to get them started

They're the closest thing out at the moment to the original sentiment of hip-hop. The struggle, the poetry, macho posturing mixed with honesty and humbleness. They're easily the best thing to come up since 2000.

yeah pretty much, but thats just a further indication of rap sucking now more than it is them being great.

Lex Diamonds

That's definitely part of why they stand out, personally I think they're something special but whatever. A good example to show someone that all current rap doesn't suck complete balls, anyway.

I have heard more songs, but I cant remember them, hence I don't think they are worth bothering with.

As I said, the Message is a good song. Does that make them an act with which to introduce someone to hip-hop? No, I'd go with someone with a better catalogue, myself.

first album only!

first album is best but black sunday is good album - not many 90's rap singles as good as "insane in the brain" imo.
