Just got three of these things today as change.
I was completely unaware they were they out there or even being minted.

Yeah I saw one last year. Apparently they're trying to phase them in slowly and phase out dollar bills slowly and eventually just have dollar coins.
I just remembered I put something like this up in sure shots last year!

there's dates of 2002 and such printed on them but, I only started seeing them 2 years ago.
MTA ticket machines give those as change back rather than dollars.

the lirr had been giving them out before 1999, on their annoying little machines. other than that... ive hardly seen them. they only seemed to exist for the convenience of the lirr.

The Sacagewea (sp?) was around for a while but still didn't catch on.
On the whole redesign front, they have to figure out what to do with the bills so that blind people can differentiate them now.

what are they made of?

The gold coins?
Probably nickel. Heck, I think even pennies are just copper-plated now.
The dollar coins they reissued in 2000 don't work in machines. The newer coins from last year do work. Go figure.

so it was the sacagawea coin that failed to get off the ground in 2000, those were the ones in the vending machines...
so they reissued the presidential dollar last year, and they wont stop until all the presidents have a coin minted after them...

The coins worked just fine in machines which were fitted for them -- largely, government machines. Most vendors just hugely resisted the coin.
Funny enough, though, one of our vending machines here accepts 'em just fine. I was kind of surprised.
If the government would just stop printing dollar bills, people would just learn to accept them, like the loonie. When I got currency in the
States before I went to Vancouver, it included one dollar bills and I thought nothing of it. But you get up there in circulation, and nobody
uses the bills -- just the loonie.

yeah they tried this same shit with the Susan B Anthony dollar in the 1970s. Never caught on....odds are this wont either.

Funny enough, the Kennedy half dollar and the Eisenhower dollar seemed to do just fine.

In December 2005, Congress decided to create a new series of $1 coins which will honor the former U.S. presidents. In 2007, Presidential coins of four different designs were produced. Another four designs will be produced each year, honoring the Presidents in order of service. (Grover Cleveland will be on two coins, since he served two non-consecutive terms.) The Presidential $1 Coin Act is intended to create renewed interest in the coin like that seen during the 50 State Quarters program.[12] At least one third of all dollar coins produced are still Sacagawea coins, with the remaining coins making up the four presidential coins annually. Under federal law (31 U.S.C. § 5112), no coins may be issued featuring a living president, or a president who died less than two years earlier. The program will run until at least 2016 with the coin commemorating Ronald Reagan, but may continue longer depending on the longevity of the currently living former presidents, and the longevity of the current president or presidents yet to be elected.

We got 1 dollar coins in 1984, and 2 dollar coins in 1988. You cant get anything under 5 bucks in a note these days.
We also have plastic notes, not paper. We were the first country in the world to do it! Which is good, because if you leave cash in your pockets when you put your clothes thru the wash its no biggie.

I used to get them a lot in my change when I bought stamps from a vending machine. Then they changed the vending machines to credit card only so I no longer get the gold dollar coins. And those coins were good because you can use them at parking meters.

"The $20 note features the Reverend John Flynn (1880-1951), founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service"
whoa, flying doctors
mikizee

Yeah flying doctors. Because Australia is such a large country, and townships in the centre are few and far between and incredibly remote, there is a flying doctor service which visit towns and emergency in light aircraft.
Sort of like an ambulance plane.
But we definitely need them. In the whole of the state of Queensland, an area into which you could comfortably fit most of Western Europe, just three paved roads venture into the state's vast and arid interior, and only one provides an outlet to the two-thirds of Australia that lies to the west. From Camooweal in the north to Barringun in the south, you could, if you were completely out of your mind, walk 1400 miles of Queensland without once crossing a paved surface. Travel any distance into the interior and you are, with amazing swiftness, in an empty country.

flying doctors, lol. oh man, i loved that tv show back in the day. sigh.
i use an australian five dollah note as a bookmark: FACT. from now on i will keep the queen face down if you like, heh.
scottish money is pretty dull and standard (http://mirror-uk-rb1.gallery.hd.org/_exhibits/money/UK-coins-and-Scottish-and-English-banknotes-1-ANON.jpg).
in scotland we get £1 notes (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1220/1459236098_4eef77d99c.jpg?v=0) as well as the £1 coins. lots of places in england refuse the notes even though it's stirling because they're quite rare.

They're changing the $5 from the queen and parliament house to sir henry parkes and catherine spence, which is fine - less references to the queen is good by me.
But they're changing the 20cent platypus to don bradman! Its a fucking outrage. Whats fucking next steve waugh and peter brock on the coat of arms instead of the roo and emu? I want my platypus to stay!
