Barack Obama has resigned his membership in the Trinity United Church.
CNN Link (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/31/obama.church/)
Obama sure acted swift. It only took 20 years, but he finally made the correct decision.
WOW, that guy is on top of things.
Wright says stuff like this for 20 years, but Obama is magically never in church on those days and is unaware of this radical's rantings. Then, when the Jeremiah Wright stuff hits the fan, he refuses to back away from his spiritual mentor. Only after Wright inexplicably reopens the controversy, Obama condemns the man in a moment of political expediency.
Not because of what Wright said, but because of the impact it was having on his campaign.
When pressed to leave the church, he refuses. Afterall, Wright retired.
Now, another controversial sermon by a guest pastor and Obama jumps out front and condemns the message. And now, he decides to leave the church.
Why?? This was a guest pastor, surely he doesn't speak for everyone at that church.
Obama is a fraud. Pure and simple.
When the church was a boon to his political success it was all good. Now, in a fit of political expediency, the church is cast off. This does not indicate that Obama is a man ruled and guided by personal conviction and principle, but instead personal gain and advancement.
Ultimately, anyone with an IQ north of 2 unequivocally understands that Obama has heard these sort of rantings numerous times and agrees with them. And that is what will be his downfall in the general election.
Obama=flip-flopper.
jesus fucking christ, are we still talking about this wright thing?

Exactly, this is still an issue because of how badly Obama handled it.
Maybe if he had condemned Wright from the get-go it may not be an issue at this point.
Obama has no one to blame but himself for this issue dragging on this long.
Now he's distancing himself from the segment of the Black population who were supportive of Wright and the Trinity church, which I think is significant if you've seen the video of his congregation carrying on when these Pastors make their controversil comments.
And he still has that segment of the White population who refuse to vote for him because he's black.
It was no doubt a difficult decision for him to make, but he's going to be faced with many difficult decisions in the White House that he won't be able to abstain from or simply give a vote of "Present" instead of YES or NO, like he so often has done in the Senate.
He's walking into a job where he'll be counted on to give us answers to an energy crisis, a dying economy, a war that's unwinnable and is crippling our economy, and he's talking about giving us a nationalized medical program within his first 100 days in office.
I'd say critical thinking and judgement are gonna be kind of important for this guy. So far, he's not impressing me much.
He's becoming Carter-like.

Are you capable of views NOT espoused by the mindless talking heads/pundits of the myopic 24 hour news cycle?

This is important, we should focus more and more on religious beliefs, then if ever there is an oppurtunity, dammit condemn people who go to church. Thank God Jesus and all things American Hillary Clinton is a good upstanding Christian who will lead this country into all things Jesus Lord like.
Hillary Clinton and John McCain are the "Chosen Ones" while Barack just doesn't understand spiritual matters. He's dumb and not smart like those two real Americans.

Who said this had anything to do with religion?
If I wanted to make this about religion I would have posed the question of which mosque Mr. Hussien Obama was going to be joining now.

No matter what contribution I make here, you show up and try and one up me. Or worse, miss any humor, neglect any point of view different than your rigid thought, then try and make it out as if I'm so stupid, as if I can't figure out anything going on in politics today.
Have fun with that smart guy, everyone needs a Nemesis so I guess I'm yours.
Pray tell, educate me about how Obama really screwed up and failed miserably by going to one of the most popular black churches in America? Then how he handled it all wrong, when he actually left the church?
Is he a liar?

It honestly doesn't bother me, but there is no way for obama supporters to convince people that this isn't an issue, especially when more then half this nation still needs thier church to "guide them."

Yeah but he left that church so...problem solved, right?

It's a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. If he stays in the church he has to continually defend his past and present with the church. If he cuts ties he only has to defend his past.
So the question is how much has the church influenced him and his views? How active was he in the church community? How many of Rev. Wright's sermons were crazy? And was Obama at those particular services?
I certainly don't agree with everything my church stands for...but I sit, listen and absorb. Some sticks, some doesn't.

It's significant to me that Obama was unable to influence the powers that be at Trinity to keep them out of the spotlight.
How are people supposed to have faith that he can influence people like Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong IL, and Hugo Chavez?

Jesus doesn't like that sort of stuff. Sometimes it's just fine and the interactions here lead to some pretty good debates, I think what is happening here has more than just a subtle racial theme to it. Whenever I try and think that no, nobody would gloat over a man and his family having to leave their church... why would that be?
The Trinity Church is a division of the United Church of Christ (http://www.ucc.org/about-us/), with 6,000 congregations and 1.4 million members Nationwide. They are Christians, they've done overwhelmingly kind acts of love in our society since 1957.
So as our current administration feels the killing must go on to protect the freedoms they have compromised us of, let's start belittling pastors and Christians here at home. All the while as sazi so finely puts it, no one questions the gop and their associations with john hagee, rod parsley, pat robertson, ted haggard, ralph reed, and all of the other biggoted right-wing evangelical christian nut jobs.

Does anyone here even care about McCain?
It's kind of pointless to make threads bashing Mc-Bush and his religious afiliations when no one really gives a shit anyway.
I'm going to make a poll.

I am pointless, haven't we come to that conclusion, your smarter and much more savvy than I on these political matters.
I love the way you write, it's so inclusive.

no, because no one points it out (which sort of reminds me of how the mainstream media gives mccain a free pass), while you on and on and on and on about obama and reverend wright.
