Argh! It must be bad Karma. The interviewer tried to use my question about fonts in GFT#1S, but the "sound wouldn't work". I think it was that annoying problem with YouTube where everything looks fine, but the slider is turned all the way down. Boo, YouTube! She's emailing me the questions that were used and I'll post them ASAP!

Maybe I'm missing the reason behind your fonts question? What is it about the fonts that has your interest piqued?

Yauch uses the garish yellow font in a lot of things. He used it in RTRW, A Day in the Life of Nathaniel Hornblower, GFT#1S, etc. I've seen it used in skate videos too like Fully Flared (Spike Jonze). And in GFT#1S he used A LOT of different fonts, they were not proportional to the screen, they had these strange gray backgrounds, etc. Normally you'd could say they look cheap.

I'm just saying that according to "traditional" or "standard" notions of graphic design, you are supposed to limit the number of fonts you use. And the yellow is garish. It's been typical of the Boy's to use so-called "bad" design. He kind of addressed it when he talked about liking to watch bad movies because you can see where things go wrong. This website (and especially the one right before it with the zooming nachos and stuff) was garish and junky.

I just wanted to hear him address this directly, especially about the fonts. I have to say that I liked the movie, but was bothered by the font choices, colors, etc. Even the fake GUI was ... junky looking. I've come to expect this and think I have some idea why they do it, but I wanted to hear it from the horse's mouth.

It reminds me of that line from some song in TT5B where he says, "I've got the fonts that you want to read." But it's just the opposite. He uses the fonts and colors that you wouldn't want to read.

I spose I hear you. Spike used that vibrant green a heap in 'Yeah Right!', but that was more to do with green screens and invisible boards/jumpramps, so it might not be the same thing at all. I think Spike is great, though.
