I really don't.

I'm trying to understand why they must be distorted. I tried reading wikipedia, and I'm not sure it really explained it well...but I think it has to do with segmentation.


but half the time they are so fucking distorted my old eyes can't make out the dumb letters/word.

The distortion is so that software (similar to what you can use with scanners) that takes images and interprets text from them can't work on the captcha image. People program spambots that register, post etc. bypassing the captcha by interpreting the text in the image. If it's distorted enough, only a human could really figure it out.

Tedious and obnoxious - we're our own worst enemy when it comes to technology sometimes.
