View Full Version : Spirulina........
So, I was watching Bizarre Foods w/ Andrew Zimmern and he was in Japan eating Rooster nuts and Kobe beef. Anyway, he was talking to someone and they went off on this tangent about how this algae, spirulina, is pretty much the best thing you can put in your body. It has the nutritional value of like a dumptruck filled with veggies n shit. Anyone try it? Do you feel like Jesus after ingesting it?

Thanks for the brilliant insight, cheesedick.
It's good for you, though!

I've never heard of it but I'll give it a try. I eat seaweed once and a while so I don't see algae tasting different. It shouldn't be hard to find around my work either.
I don't want to feel like Jesus though. Can I have a chance to pick who I want to feel like after eating it? Like Gene Simmons or somthing?

Thanks for reminding me, I should really get some of that. I used to have it all the time in my smoothies but I stopped when I was pregnant. (The jury is still out on how much is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as too much of a good thing can be a bad thing - probably would have been fine to keep having it but I was being cautious.) Now that that's all a non-issue, I should get some more.

yeah i was with some friends at the weekend who are really into being super-healthy(when they're not drinking their body weight in vodka that is) and they were talking about that -apparently it can be a bit slimy but packed full of iron and stuff. wish i wasn't so lazy with the super-healthy stuff
What would be a good accompaniment to it? Can you just whack it in a stir fry like spinach to boost the iron content or does it have a strong taste?

i'm not too sure-i think one girl made it into a drink but i bet you could pretty much chuck it in anything-i would opt for a curry or something stronger tasting just incase it does taste nasty

I'm trying to think how to describe the taste... it's difficult to explain. It definitely tastes rather green and vitamin-y, but I don't recall it as being especially unpleasant (it's not like wheat grass juice or anything, thank god, blech). I used to just throw a spoonful of it into the blender with a banana, some yogurt, some apple juice and a handful of oats and down that as a liquid breakfast most mornings and it tasted fine to me.

Yes I would think if you put it into a curry it would do nicely. Just remember to add it at the end though, just before eating, not in the cooking process as too high a heat will pretty much nullify its micronutrient content.
The only thing I'd say though about having it in food is, unless you are making a curry several times a week or something, what would be the point? You need to ingest it on a more regular basis for it to have any real health effect, so to me it seems much easier to make it part of the breakfast routine.
