Friend: Paul Newman is battling cancer

NEW YORK (AP) -- A longtime neighbor and business partner of Paul Newman has told The Associated Press the 83-year-old actor
] is battling cancer.

Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered with Newman to start Newman's Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, says Newman told
him about the disease about 18 months ago. He doesn't say what kind of cancer.

Newman responded Tuesday to unconfirmed reports that he is ill with lung cancer. In a statement, he said he was "doing nicely."

Newman's spokesman, Jeff Sanderson, issued a one-line statement late Tuesday.

Artistic directors of Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse cited unspecified health issues when they announced last month
that the 83-year-old screen legend would not direct "Of Mice and Men" this fall.

Newman lives in Westport with his wife, Joanne Woodward.

Newman appeared to have lost weight when he was photographed at the Indianapolis 500 auto race last month. Martha Stewart,
in an entry dated June 6, posted a photo on her blog of herself with actor, who looked thin, at a luncheon to benefit the Hole in
the Wall Gang Camp, a charity Newman created to benefit critically ill children.

Two friends said Tuesday that Newman appeared to be doing well.

"I think he's feeling quite well," said actor James Naughton, who spoke to Newman Monday night. "As far as I can tell he's doing
very well."

Newman had an infection over the winter, but seems to have that under control, Naughton said. He was lively at this month's

Hole in the Wall Gang camp fundraiser, he said.

Michael Brockman, Newman's racing team partner, said Newman told him recently that he wants to get back into his race car
for a test run and possibly another competition. His last race was last fall, he said.

"I think he's doing better than he was," Brockman said, noting that Newman had regained most of the weight he had lost.

"I think he looks great," said Brockman, who saw Newman last weekend. "I wish I looked that good."

Brockman called Newman "one of the best guys I ever met."

"He's just a regular guy," Brockman said. "He's humble."

Newman won an Oscar for his performance in 1986's "The Color of Money." His other films include "Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid," "The Sting," "The Hustler," "The Verdict" and "Cool Hand Luke."

Paul Newman is suffering from lung cancer, friends have claimed.

(BANG) -

Paul Newman reportedly has lung cancer.

The 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' actor has been suffering from the potentially fatal disease for several months and just weeks ago had to pull out of directing a big-screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's book 'Of Mice and Men'.

A friend of the actor - who used to be a chain-smoker - told the National Enquirer magazine: "We have known he is seriously ill for several weeks but his loved ones are being very protective and saying very little."

The legendary actor was reportedly diagnosed with the cancer at the New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a few hours drive from his Connecticut home, where he lives with his wife Joanne Woodward.

In March, a cancer patient claimed he had regularly seen Newman at the hospital.

He said: "He's been there a lot, he's even worked out in the waiting room, doing the squat thrusts. Last time, he was in there he had a long beard. Joanne is there waiting for him and being very sweet with the assistants."

However, his spokesperson played down his hospitalisation, saying Newman was "being treated for athlete's foot and hair loss".

Newman has previously denied reports he has cancer.

On a side note I don't think "Of Mice and Men" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105046/) can be improved upon...(n)

I saw him at the past Indy 500. He looked rather good imo. Better than I've seen him before. He's been very frail for years. I barely recognised him a few years ago in Wisconsin. Seeing him at Indy was a real treat since he hadn't stepped foot in that track in many, many years.

Get well soon Paul, you've done many things for many people.
