The reviews have been pretty scathing, but Friday alone it made $13 million.

Why should I care? I dunno. I kinda hoped Night would get a spanking. :o

My sketch group dudes and I filmed our first thing last night where we had a little girl
interviewing people about the movie before they went to see it. It was pretty funny...I'll put a link when we get it up.
Anyway yeah some of the guys saw it yesterday as research and said it was terrible.

ahahaha!

i hadn't even heard of the film until this weekend, they've been playing trailers non-stop on the tv. not normal trailers, but the sort of cheapy featurette trailers where the director is a talking head saying it's the best work he's done yadda yadda. i am intrigued, but i don't know if i can forgive him for the lady in the water.

Just saw it, I liked it. I saw the Hulk Saturday night. I would have to say I would give The Happening a B and the Hulk a B-.

The very last scene is so very necessary in The Happening though or else its grade would drop to a C-.

No way would I see this movie, but the radio ads are hilarious. All they say is "it's his first R-rated movie!!!" If that's all they have to sell the movie it simply has to be a piece of shit.

I loved the Sixth Sense even though I knew the hook early on. It shocked the hell out of my friend though. Anyhow, hook or not, that was a really good movie. If I remember his movies correctly, the next one was okay (saw it free on HBO) and the rest were crap. I can't imagine a scenario in which I give him another chance. I read a book about him last year and he sounds like a real dick too.

A to the Z,
Is M. Night Shamyalan one of the worst directors of all time? The man piggybacked off the Sixth Sense to hoodwink studios, respected actors, and moviegoers...... Right?

I have to admit that I caught the M Night fever after his Sixth Sense success but now I have recovered.
I don't plan on seeing it until it hits DVD or HBO but am I correct that this is about plants being are angry at us because we’re hurting the planet?

abcdefz
06-19-2008, 10:33 AM
Nah, he's not the worst.

Though I haven't seen Lady in the Water or The Happening or his first two movies.

He did manage to parlay The Sixth Sense's success into more success, though. Unbreakable, Signs, and even The Village all made money.
I think that, after Sixth Sense, Lady in the Water is the only one of his movies that actually tanked.

That doesn't mean he's good, obviously. But I think he's got serious strengths as a director, but his material needs work. He needs to get a
producer or collaborator he can actually listen to, but he won't do it. He's like George Lucas; he's in his own hermetic little world, and as long
as it makes him money, he sees no reason to challenge himself with the remote possibility of humility.

Yeti
06-19-2008, 10:46 AM
I said one of the worst but I am overstating the point. I know he is talented but when he succeeded with Sixth Sense I kept hearing things like--the next Hitchcock. What?

He is very secretive and protective of his projects. Currently you can compare his situation to Mike Myers. They both want full control but sometimes a little collaboration is a good thing.

I used to be protective of my work but I realized that good input helps me see the big picture.

TAL
06-19-2008, 10:52 AM
I haven't seen any of his movies.

abcdefz
06-19-2008, 10:52 AM
Get input, but call your own shots; it'll still be yours.

Yeah -- the whole "next Hitchcock" thing was just hype. He's not much like Hitch at all, actually, and their working methods are pretty opposite:
Hitch would bring in a writer and they'd hammer the story out together, and Hitch would leave his name off of it. Night would probably never
ever do that.

A friend of mine claims that the trailer being shown at the moment is tweaked with effects to make the film look more interesting. He says you see spooky stuff in the trailer that isn't in the film at all...

Unbreakable (y)

That's the only one of his I've seen that I'm truly down with.

Yeti

I work with a guy that is very possessive of his work. He will ask for help but in a downlow way. I will give advice on editing, graphics or help with shooting some segments. When other people help me they end up in the credits. He rarely puts anyone in his credits. When people contribute in anyway to my programs I usually give them a shout.

M Night is definitely a puppetmaster.

I also liked Unbreakable.

My prob with this video is the girl. Some of the stuff she says is funny (marital problems) but shes precocious as fuck.

Also the whole "annoying kid asking questions no one expects them to" has been done to death. Didn't Jamie Kennedy do it?

I want to see this, just because I find the general idea behind it creepy and intriguing. I'm sure it won't be that good though. I think it's hilarious when the previews try and sell it by saying it's his first R rated movie.

And speaking of the Love Guru, that really looks completely and utterly not funny. I'm really not getting it. I'm not too good to laugh at stupid shit. I laughed at both of the Harold and Kumar movies. But this, I'm not really sure they're going for. Really not funny.

Plot summary

Maurice Pitka (Mike Myers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife (Meagan Good). Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so that his team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, can break a 40-year-old curse and win the Stanley Cup. The Maple Leafs first must face the Los Angeles Kings in the championship series before they can capture the Stanley Cup.

Jesus.

it was Dirk Dickler playing a science teacher. Mark's acting was as wooden as a forest but that would be insulting trees. And I happen to like Mark but this movie was hollow

Over and all: It was like watching a mediocre XFiles Episode fun to watch but nothing to talk about after watching it with someone.

BTW~ I agree that Unbreakable was the Joint. Shame he didn't follow up on that trilogy

I saw it tonight. I don't have the words to describe how much I hate myself right now so I'll stop.

Only thing I would say is that I'd like to see John Leguizamo playing Mark Wahlberg's part. At least Leguizamo wouldn't play such a pussy.

I read that review nastee posted and ended up having a really vivid nightmare about being in a situation like the happening.

it was probably scarier than the movie because in my dream, nature was controlling everything. and at one point, a threaded needle I was using to repair something, flew out of my hand and tried to imbed itself in my eyeball. then, my friend (I think it was my old college roommate I haven't seen in 7 years) and I ran off to get in her SUV. I got in the passenger side and tried to unlock the door for her, but it wouldn't unlock and then the car started moving. my seatbelt was pinning me down and I kept trying to shift the gear into neutral, but the car kept going and running into cars in this parking lot and we were screaming and then it backed up into a minivan filled with people and crushed and killed them all and all I could do was scream and cry.

totally uncool dude!

i rented this movie (for the rifftrax) and at first i thought "wow, m night shyamamamlaln has a really good sense of humor" because the movie was so "so bad it's funny" that i figured there was no way he wasn't doing it intentionally. all the acting and all the scenes and the plot and everything, it was all so ridiculously bad and funny that i figured, certainly, the goal was to make a really tongue-in-cheek bad, funny movie. like the scene where mark wahlberg and co. are in the field, and you can hear people shooting themselves in the background, and mark wahlberg is trying to explain how the toxin only attacks large groups of people, and as he's explaining it you can hear gunshots in the background, and i'm like "haha, this is a funny scene," that kind of thing.

but then i watched the special features and i was horrified, he was actually trying to make a legitimate horror movie. like he was talking about how the goal was to push the envelope, and make these really dark, twisted scenes, and it just made me depressed. like he was bragging about how the scene where the two fat kids get shot with a shotgun, possibly one of the funniest scenes in the movie, was supposed to be really dreadful and tense and hard to watch and, well, that's too bad for him, because unbreakable and the sixth sense were really good.

the rifftrax is excellent though

that's one of the many things that made me think the movie had to be a joke, the way they kept saying stuff like "something's happening!" in the movie, and in the trailer. i thought he made a shitty funny B movie on purpose, i can't believe how good he thinks it was supposed to be
