daft punk = overrated
they are cool and i love some of their music... but c'mon... it's not like they are electronic gods or anything.
the monkees = underrated
when most people think of the monkees it's "last train to clarksville" and shit... but they made some really great songs. this is a psych masterpiece (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdd5xI9l7Ns). i guess people just think they are some kinda talentless boy band who never played their instruments... which couldn't be further from the truth. fuck davy jones. mike, peter and mickey had tons of talent.
that's all i can think of for now...
your turn!

arf! yeah, you just have to watch Head and you realize that the monkees were pretty cool. mike nesmith especially rules.
I think a shit ton of things are overrated, the only thing that comes to mind right now is LCD Soundsystem. I just don't get the appeal. I already made a thread about that though. also, the hold steady. don't get it. oh yeah, and amy winehouse
underrated: Rush!

soooooo agree with the winehouse being overrated-she's headlining a festival i'm going to later this year and everyone i'm going with and me are totally wishing she'll drop out in time to get someone decent in!
also seriously overrated-anything along the lines of Neyo (or however the fuck you spell it) Usher, Rhianna etc etc etc. oh and Mariah Carey-i don't get how she's sells so many goddam records-pile of shite
And Mark Ronson-he good but not that good

I like Daft Punk tons - I just don't think they're as innovative as bands like Boys Noize (http://www.myspace.com/boysnoize). Often too poppy for me, not that I can't appreciate a good pop song.

the amount of times i have heard somebody say that the beatles are overrated is getting to such proportions is that i am starting to think they are actually underrated.
Look, i get that some people arent moved by all lot of their stuff but the fact the impact they had on many forms of music is why they could be "overrated". But as far as i am concerned they are the fucking nuts.

the beatles had a lot of shitty songs(A LOT!). they had some good shit, but a whole lot of it was just plain shit. and the things they did that garnered much of their critical and commercial praise was being done by other bands(better bands). the only real thing i see that they did that was better than all of their contemporaries is the recording techniques they used.
of course i didn't grow up in the 60's so this is just all speculation based on the music i listen to from that time.
Had a listen to that link- pretty good but i am intrigued why you think they are more innovative than the Punk. Do you think the Dafts arent innovative?
I guess what I'm saying is they capitalized and put into "single-able" form music that had been pioneered by others. That by itself is admirable, and I really do like their music, I just don't think they are as original as people give them credit for.

i was including the songs they both wrote for the beatles as well. I just think mcartney was more of a craftsman whereas lennon was a bit random and could be capable of writing summat genius like imagine but also knock out a fucking racket like revolution number 9 and be considered more influential etc but macca could do all sorts of styles and make them sound good. Well, I think "Imagine" and "Gimme Some Truth" are okay songs that are wildly overrated. "Imagine" is actually pretty stupid, even.
"Jealous Guy" is pretty terrific, and "How Do You Sleep?" is good but kind of mean spirited. "Crippled Inside" is okay but feels kind of false
after JL/POB. "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier" is a riff dressed up as a song. Etc.

i always thought that lennon tried to live up to his renegade revolutionary tag and when it worked it was awesome "working class hero" for example but when it didnt it was either a racket or sub standard rock and roll. Wheara mccartney just carried on writing good (but not always) songs. Apart from that thing with the fucking frog chorus. awful.

Yeah, Macca hit some real lows, but his best stuff is just fantastic. I'd put Band on the Run up against pretty much any album, any day.
And he's one of the great bass players.
I probably overpraise him a bit because so many people shit on him, and it's not right. And it's not like John was a saint; he was unfaithful

Oh, but anyway -- yeah, I think that's a pretty good assessment.

I probably overpraise him a bit because so many people shit on him, and it's not right. And it's not like John was a saint; he was unfaithful
to two wives, pretty much abandoned a son, and admittedly hit a woman (or women).
Yeah and although it was a stupid move on maccas part he deserves praise for coming out of the one legged woman debacle with his head held high and his bank account still bulging.

even his last few albums havent been great but there has always been at least one track thats good and different.
I always liked that "veronica" track he wrote with elvis costello.
"Veronica" is pretty good.
A good compilation from his 90's and 00's albums could be pretty terrific.
Driving Rain is a solid album. Off the Ground, not so much. Flowers in the Dirt has some good stuff.

The last one I knew of was All the Best. I think it went up through "Say, Say, Say," so it was really solid.

There are a couple that I'm not familiar with. Or I've forgotten them. But that covers pretty much the same era; if All the Best had been
two discs instead of one.

Sgt. Pepper's is overrated.
Agreed, i always thought Sgt Pepper wasnt their best. When i was 13 my music teacher played us the whole album on the 20th anniversary and he just wnet on and on about each track and it was the longest lesson and thats always put me off.

ewwww, I didn't like For Sale so much. I'd say Revolver is when they really got good.

I love the White Album too. If I could only listen to one Beatles album that would be it.
waay overrated: timbaland
Most of his old production is cool though.

I think we can all agree that they're overrated just because of how hyped music critics make them but that doesn't mean that they're not an amazing band.

Jay-Z is definitely someone you should dig deeper into. He's knocked out two undisputed classics and a slew of other solid albums.

Be sure to give some feedback after you listen. I like to hear what people who don't listen to much rap think of certain albums.
As for your question, yes, yes it would be.

Ok will do, i have listened to lots of different hip hop but never got involved as deeply as i would have liked. Probably due to cost and lack of knowledge

overrated electric ladyland
underrated axis: bold as love
i noticed in the beatles songs they pronounce been as bean. do they still say that in the uk? like "how have you bean"? or is it just certain people or what? or is just how the beatles sing? do they only say "bean" when they sing or when they talk?
this was a serious question (seriously ignorant perhaps?) and i expect serious answers from you brits.

Could we have a definition of 'overrated/underrated', please?
Are we talking about it from a critical sense or is it based on your own opinion?
How can artists such as David Bowie, Interpol, Jay-Z etc be underrated when they continuously receive plaudits from media publications and the public?
