The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and imperiled similar prohibitions in other cities
Justice Antonin Scalia referred to the "inherent right of self-defense" central to the Second Amendment. I have to laugh. The 2nd amendment reads--A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
When I read this amendment I think of black powdered rifles and hand cannons.
OK, I do understand that criminals can get guns from underground dealers and people feel the need to protect themselves but......come on DC was the modern version of Deadwood and still has a high murder rate. the supreme court was silent for awhile and now boom bang. Bring your guns to town. All I can say is....Wow!
Here is the beginning of one article----
The U.S. Supreme Court made clear Thursday an individual's right to bear arms. "It's like the greatest thing that's happened in this nation since the Revolutionary War," said Janalee Tobias, who founded a group called Women Against Gun Control.
The court, conclusively addressing the Second Amendment for the first time in 217 years, struck down a strict law in the District of Columbia against handgun ownership. More broadly, the ruling put to rest the question of whether the constitutional amendment protected an individual right or a collective right as part of a state militia.
