I dunno if I posted a thread about this or not last year...but I missed promotion by .01 last year and it was a long long year. Anyway I found out last week that this year I made it...so I'm officially a Technical Sergeant (select)...I'm excited cus the Air Force promotes people the slowest and I'm actually ahead of the game at this point. So yeah that's my good news for the week.

^Thanks...it's actually kind of bitter sweet cus I missed by so little and my scores last year would actually have made this year's cut off! (it went down 2 points) But fuck it...I made it so I guess I'll go drink some beers

so when will you fly Top Gun planes?

LOL...umm probably never. Only a small percentage of people in the AF actually fly planes...the rest of us just do our own small parts to enable planes to fly

Also, the F-14 is a navy plane. And they were retired in 2006.

wait, you're in the airforce, but you don't get to fly planes? :( I wanted to join the airforce to fly planes, but then like, there was a war and I said "uh, no thanks"

Is there a non-technical sergeant promotion, too?

At ease? (y)

like putting the fuel in or inflating the tyres?

LOL...well yeah those are two very important jobs, but it's like this...in the big picture the AF mission is simple, Bombs on Targets or as some other people say Kill People and break their shit. So everyone in the AF has a role to play in the overall mission some roles are larger like say pilots but in a sense they are no more important than the young kid who works at finance and makes sure that pilot gets paid, the guy at the clinic who keeps us healthy, or in my case the person who keeps the computer networks up and running. Without that not many planes would get off the ground. Granted this a very simple way to explain a complicated organization.

Meanwhile...I knew Ace mentioning my alleged myspace would be bad lol

My cousin was in the air force as a pilot. He had some sort of head injury something and was grounded, so he served the rest of his time at a desk.
That sucked because he really wanted to be a pilot for life, and he had only been flying for a few months when the head injury happened.

I can't remember what it was... maybe it wasn't an injury, but an aneurysm...?

.so I'm officially a Technical Sergeant (select)....

Congratulations! Sorry you had to go through another year, but yay for you now!

1) I am impressed if you can spell your title. I've never been able to spell that word so I say "sgt." when I refer to police types.

2) would you mind explaining what you do? I assume that you boss people around? What makes you "select" if you don't mind me asking.

1. Thanks...I wasn't 100% sure I spelled it right but no one would know the abbreviation of TSgt

2. Well a real generic description of my AFSC is here (http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjobcomputer.htm)
but right now I'm the leader of a 5 person shop responsible for various client-server applications and maintenance oh and "select" means I have been selected for promotion but haven't sewn on my new stripe yet. Sadly the Air Force has kind of a crappy promotion system. Once everyone has been selected say roughly 7,000 this year they then give you what is called a line number which determines your order of promotion, this is based on time in service and time in grade which sucks cus basically those people who have been in longer get promoted first regardless of their scores. Anyway the 7k promotees will be divided by 12 for every month and on the first of each month that many people get promoted. So for now I'm a TSgt-select because it will be a while before I sew it on
