Nice article

Some Beastie-related pull-out quotes:

"He bought an early video camera in 1985 and has accumulated so much Beasties footage he says he can’t contemplate actually editing it all into anything."

"In its self-consciously retro feel, Gunnin’ continues Yauch and the Beasties’ seventies fixation, which began with the trio dressing up in vintage Adidas track suits . . ."

"Gunnin’ includes new Beastie tracks, and a mix of seventies R&B and funk, but there won’t be a soundtrack for sale. 'The music industry is having so much trouble right now that nobody really wanted to pay for the clearances,' he says."

". . . the Beastie Boys are recording in the studio across the hall. They owe Capitol two more albums. This year was supposed to be set aside for recording the next one, but Yauch got sidetracked by the documentary."

I never really got that "They owe Capitol two more albums"-thing. Strange thing.

They want to get out of the contract with them, as the lable (i think) is in pretty poor shape, or they want to do other things in their own time, or both.

Capitol Records technically doesn't exist anymore. It merged with Virgin Records and is now called Capitol Music.

I think the Beasties had to sign a new contract because their Capitol Records contract doesn't really exist anymore either.

^ yes virgin & capitol records merged to form capitol music group for distribution. and EMI is the parent of both.

but my understanding . . . and maybe i'm wrong . . . is that both the "capitol records" and "virgin records" imprints still exist as record labels.

for instance the beasties & other capitol artists are still alive & kicking at capitolrecords.com (http://www.capitolrecords.com).

and virginrecords.com (http://www.virginrecords.com) has its own roster.

long story short, i believe "capitol records" = record label & "capitol music group" = distribution label. yeah?

Yes, but technically speaking they're one label now.

I think the Beasties had to sign a new contract so that they didn't get dropped in the midst of the reshuffling but maybe not because they're so popular. I know a few artists had to sign new contracts once the merger took place.

I wish that they'd bring back Grand Royal, but apparently that was a pain in the ass to run.
