in real life, I know people who repeatedly say various things that are wrong, and I'm not sure if I should say anything or what. I imagine that they have just gone through life not being corrected and therefore started believing they are correct. :/

examples:

saying "I'm weary of that"...when it should be leary or wary.

saying, "I think I have old timer's disease"...when it should be alzheimer's

and I'm not quite sure if one of my friends realizes that "ginormous" isn't a word.

wait. scratch that, ginormous is in the dictionary now! that's fucking retarded.

What's wrong with "I'm weary of that"...?? Weary just means tired?

wea·ry –

1. physically or mentally exhausted by hard work, exertion, strain, etc.; fatigued; tired: weary eyes; a weary brain.
2. characterized by or causing fatigue: a weary journey.
3. impatient or dissatisfied with something (often fol. by of): weary of excuses.
4. characterized by or causing impatience or dissatisfaction; tedious; irksome: a weary wait.
–verb (used with object), verb (used without object) 5. to make or become weary; fatigue or tire: The long hours of work have wearied me.
6. to make or grow impatient or dissatisfied with something or at having too much of something (often fol. by of): The long drive had wearied us of desert scenery. We had quickly wearied at such witless entertainment.

Ha I was just going to say the same thing. I wait and see if they correct me. Than I bust their balls about it.

I rarely do.

Also, you should've capitalized the "d" in "do".

I only really correct people when they say my name wrong, like shorten it to "Sue" or "Suzie" or whatever. That shit really pisses me off, and I think it's common decency to say someone's name right. I sometimes give they whole "you're not my boyfriend and you're not my mother, so you do not have permission to nickname me" speech.

The title of this thread should be...

"Do you correct people?"

it is the most tedious aspect of my life, having to corrent peoples pronunciation of my name. Ive come to the point that I just let them pronounce it wrong, and if I re-meet them enough times then Ill finally correct them.

it makes all the phone work I do clients very annoying

i used to correct people a lot more.

There are a couple of people at work whose spelling is beyond shit that i still have a pop at but i used to work with two lads who corrected all grammar and punctuation to the nth degree which got on my tits because a)my grammar and punctuation are shit and b)if we were having some sort of email discussion, if they had no answer to my point they would simply just point out all my errors instead of coming back with something decent oh and i have deliberately made this sentence really long with no pauses.

Huh. I don't know what I called Heiress when I met her. I probably didn't know how to pronounce it and just said "chick" or something proper like that.

My name is not hard to pronounce, Maura. I have it printed on my cubicle at work, yet I still have 3 people at work who call me something else, Barbara, Myra, and Martha...wtf?

Depends who it is. I'll correct my friends. One of them once said "That pervert was trying to crop a field!" and I was like, "Goddammit, it's 'cop a feel.' "

However, I'm usually hesitant to say stuff to strangers. There's times I really, really want to, but I'm shy. I was at the natural history museum in Raleigh and this little kid points to the giant whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling and asks, "What's that mommy?" and she replies, "That's a dinosaur!" I was shocked and wanted to say something, but I wasn't comfortable enough to correct her in front of her kid. I should have, though. I mean, that kid's at the stage where anything their parent says is 100% infallible truth and their mom is too stupid to even read the plaque. :(

why are you being mean?

trailerprincess, the people I'm talking about say, "I'm weary of it", meaning "I'm suspicious of it".

I sometimes correct people, when they seem unsure of what they're saying. like when my roommate was calling "seitan", "satan" and sort of giggled questioningly after saying it and I corrected her. but really, some people say "say-tahn", or "say-tAn". so it wasn't that big a difference.

Most of the time it really depends on the mood I'm in. If I happen to be having a day when I'm snippy, I'm known to correct everything from grammar to inaccuracies in statements, right down to manners.

But, for the most part, I just try to lead by example when it comes to the grammar and manners. People confusing the meanings of different words I will usually let slide or say something like, "Oh wait... do you mean blah blah instead of yadda yadda?". I guess that might be annoying to some people, but just think if I were someone important (and I might be someday) instead of just a regular schmuck on the street.

it makes all the phone work I do clients very annoyingIn general, I think people struggle with names -- especially on the phone. My last name is so easy and yet I usually get called something else. So I always spell it and people still get it wrong. So now, I say, "like the flower" after I spell it. And people still get it wrong.

But, for the most part, I just try to lead by example when it comes to the grammar and manners. Me, too. But that rarely works. At work, I usually just make sarcastic comments, or laugh at them with other people. At my job, people constantly use "reocurring" when they mean "recurring" -- someday it'll get added to our American English dictionary. Others type "patients" when they mean "patience".

On topic, the other day in a doctor's office waiting room, I heard this older gentleman on his phone and he told the person on the line, "I'm at the Urgent Care clinic." This must have led to some panic, and wrangling, so he admitted he made a mistake, and corrected himself to "Drop-in clinic" and was there for a regular check up. He hung up and told his wife, "Don't you hate it when our daughter feels like she has to correct us? She's so irritating.":o

aww i'm just playin with ya! sorry :o

i just come here to mess around.

anyway, ummm well i guess i don't tend to correct, unless it's my sister or my husband. it's usually her correcting me tho as i tend to mispronounce words i read. i edit and write for my job, so sometimes it's hard to leave it behind.

i have a friend who often mixes metaphors or just simply uses the wrong word. i tend not to correct her, but it annoys me! :/

i have to correct people most days when they call my son princess, or she or her-COZ HE'S A BOY. ok he has long hair so sometimes i don't say anything-it's probably an easy mistake to make but i do kind of worry he's gonna grow up with a complex. but i'm pretty sure he's gonna want it cut off soon-if he doesn't then i hope they'll be cool about it when it comes time to start school next year....
