View Full Version : i need a hobby
something interesting to do so that when people say "what do you do for fun?" i can say "well i do this interesting thing" and they'll say "oh my, isn't that sexy". right now if people asked me what i did for fun i'd have to tell them i'm a moderately successful poster on a message board about the beastie boys (but it's ok because i don't actually post about the beastie boys lol i stopped that about 6 years ago) and that's no good
something outdoorsy that doesn't cost money and that i can do by myself because i don't have many friends (that's why i want a cool hobby).
what are your hobbies? i'll steal one maybe

Why not collect weird pornographic figurines?
Plastic model building, damn that sounds like a fun hobby, for reals. I've always wanted to build Gundam models.
Edit: Bob, take up a musical instrument.

I saw you as a warhammer man, Bob. Sorry.
Gardening and Magic get my votes though, namely because I have always wanted to be both. have I showed you the only magic trick I could pull off as a child? You take a bank note, fold it horizontally, then unfold it the opposite way you folded it, and voila! It's magically upside-down.
I got that from a genuine magic trick book.
A magic gardener. That would be unique. Magically making flowers wither, and leaves go brown.

Get a mountain bike...I got mine for under $200. It's good exercise and it's outdoors and there is potential to meet people out on trails and roads

i've thought about that but boston is one of the most dangerous cities in the universe to bike in or something (maybe that's an exaggeration but it is pretty dangerous) and i don't want to die
maybe running though. i've fiddled with the idea of running a marathon someday but i have a feeling that's not going to go much further than fiddling. it would be pretty sexy though. "what do you do for fun?" "i run marathons bitch, get out of my way, i'm in training"
i'd probably have to stop drinking so much if i wanted to do that, so...maybe not.

^I'm in the same boat; ever since I moved I've been wanting to start running and especially to start mountain biking since I apparently live a stone's throw away from "some of the best fucking trails in the world, duuude" to quote my coworker, but I'm so tired and lazy on my days off that I never get around to it. The drinking really doesn't help, I'm on my third triple of the day.

yeah, i'm lazy on my days off and busy on my days on. i guess technically i could do it in the morning or when i get home from school/work because it's summer and the sun stays up pretty late but...i'm lazy. and i would miss drinking

or bike, thats free
or bowl
or play pool
or wander around the city and study the bad neighborhoods and compile a mental file of blight and consider the cause and effect and what the social impact is
or paint
or join some kind of free class on some shit offered thru your public library

also bear in mind that most people who claim to lead very interesting lives just tend to be better at stretching the details further than the honest ones that say they do the same shit as everyone else.

maybe i could be a vigilante
i could be "the runner". i could catch people doing bad things and then throw something at them and say "stop being a criminal!" and then run away before they can kill me

i love gardening and everyone seems to think it's awesome that i do it.
my husband and i just started up a new hobby yesterday! we're gonna start putting puzzles together while we watch TV. that way we're challenging our brains and not just mindlessly sitting there starting at the tube (technically the LCD).

that seems like the best time, yeah. i always have to take a dump right around that time though, so i'm worried i'm going to have to go in the middle of the run, that's what keeps me behind a lot of the time

if you squeeze when you run the feeling goes away until you finish so you don't have to worry about it!
You're a funny guy Bob, write short funnies for papers and magazines and see if you can get a bit of money for it.
You could send some in to greeting card companies too.

I was gonna say hiking but it sounds like you're not interested in that kind of thing and I don't know what kinds of trails there are round Boston anyway.
Learn to play guitar, girls love a guy who can play guitar.
I second TNLOL on the pool thing. I was going quite a bit last winter and about 25% of the way toward my goal of becoming a shark but then the weather got nice. I plan to resume my training this fall.
yeah playing guitar is a good one. i've been playing properly for just over three years, schooled for two, and it's interesting to follow your skill progression and how good you can get in a relatively short time.
you could also join a gym. after working out you feel incredibly relaxed.

i used to go the gym, i get free access to the (rather well equipped) school gym with my tuition, but now that i live about an hour away from it, i've lost the discipline required to go.
it sucks, because i really do enjoy weightlifting, sometimes i wonder what i'd look like or how strong i'd be now if i'd never quit. someday when i get a relatively permanent apartment with enough floorspace i'm going to buy a squat rack or a power cage, a bench, a barbell, and a bunch of weights and i'll be set. if i had weights in my house i'd definitely do it regularly, i really enjoy it. it's not even all that expensive, i think it would only run me something like $500. probably less if i bought something used off craigslist. but then there'd probably be nasty invisible sweat.
anyway i think i'm gonna give the running thing a serious try. i did about 3 miles this morning and it felt good. i'm thinking if i take it semi-seriously then eventually i can do some races and tell people i do that. that'll be hot. i'm trying to impress a girl that does triathlons so i figure i need to at least be able to compete in a 5k if i want to get to first base. i wonder how far a marathon would get me...?

i took a poop today before my run, bob, and i felt wonderful while i ran
i wish i could do it at will but it comes when it wants to. i woke up this morning feeling like i had to take a poo so i purposely sat around the house for an hour waiting for something to happen but it didn't. then i went out for a run and sure enough there it is. i held it in just fine but still, that's annoying
maybe i need a better diet
awesome way to start a new page
