View Full Version : Ever wish you could wipe your memory and watch a film again for the first time?

Some films will always (to me) seem best on their first viewing, whilst others seem to get better the more I watch them. I was thinking of this when I came home from The Dark Knight for the second time; it was still thrilling and all, but it lost a wee bit of magic from the first time.

A few years ago I got to watch Psycho with my sister who had no idea of the plot and it was a hoot to see her react to it for the first time. For some reason, I've always known the "twist" in Psycho...I must have picked it up by osmosis by reading stuff as a kid or saw it for the first time when I was very young...I don't know which. I'd love to be able to watch Psycho for the first time and see what my reaction would be...

And not just films with a twist either. John Carpenter's Halloween is probably my all time favourite film, and I must have watched it a zillion times but I'd love to be able to see it 'fresh'. Again, because I was young and used to watch it repeatedly I can't remember the first time I saw it.

Anyone else have any films they like to see "a new"?

I wish I could wipe my memory so I wouldn't remember anything about Dumb & Dumber. And then never watch it again.

i think anything that contains crazy special effects would be cool. any movie that relies on that sort of stuff loses its appeal once you know how this or that goes.

I love the movies that I didn't know the essential plot elements and they just knocked me out.

Most awesome first viewings, probably:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Tootsie
Alien
Memento
Almost Famous
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Blood Simple
Birdy
Citizen Kane
After Hours
Fargo
Hail, the Conquering Hero
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
sex, lies, and videotape

Those are movies that had a serious rush of surprise, a real thrill of film, and I was so glad to be there.

The Shining

I almost put this one on my list -- the first time I saw it was incredibly powerful. But it was more disturbing than thrilling or anything
(kind of like requiem for a Dream), so now as I rewatch it, I'm kind of glad I've got some cushion.

I went to see it the weekend it opened, so I must've been about 13 or 14. I walked out and was trying to be cool about it, but as
soon as I saw mom and dad's car there to pick me up I sprinted.
