View Full Version : what's the worst pain you have experienced?

i'm talking physical here, not emotional. like when padster refused your advances or your cat died.
operations, illnesses, childbirth, accidents, let's hear it.
my colleague had a lumbar puncture once. yeah. he votes the spinal tap. fucking OUCH.
sorry if this brings up any bad memories for people. /hopes no-one has lost a limb in a car crash here. i just want to hear about your experiences with pain, and then everyone can go 'woah man - you got attacked by a lion in kenya? what a hero'.
I'm sure I've spoke of this before, but when I was a child I fell 20 odd ft down a small gap and cause extensive nervous damage in my back. From the ages of 8 till around 19 I lost the sensation of pain entirely. It wasn't until I started to shoot up in height that the trapped nerves began to free themselves and I began to experience dulled pain sensations.
I'm my time I have suffered a shed load amount of broken bones that have gone unnoticed, until I could here some clicking. I actually have a large lump on my left wrist were a broken bone healed wonky (a cast would have helped but I didn't know it was broke).
Also, in the last week of university my appendix burst but to me it felt like a slight stomach ache and I only got it checked out because I couldn't stop puking. Id' left it that long that I developed Peritonitis.
So my only real dealing with pain was when I fell off a bench and knocked my two front teeth back up into my gums. Ouch.

Thats like having superpowers
Anyway i have this skin condition, called psoriasis. It flares up occasionally.
So one of the only ways to get it to heal and go away is UV light, be it sunlight or special UV lamps, similar to sunbed lamps. So I bought these special UVB globes and a little unit so I can use it at home, since its the middle of winter and theres hardly any sun.
So the globes were a bit more powerful than I thought and even though I was only under the lamps for 5 minutes on each side they gave me the most horrific sunburn all over. Right now I can hardly walk without screaming in pain.
Soooo painful. Ive had so much codeine today I'm like a zombie. a zombie that cant even walk, sit, stand or move.
i think i could fight about a million of those zombies

Waking up with a bloody pillow because you always bite your tongue in your sleep isn't a super power!!! :D
I get psoriasis too on my back and upper arms, I'd have a lot more tattoos if I didn't suffer from it (n)

i would say that the tattoo on my obliques/ribs was about the most painful thing i've put myself through. i had to have a bite stick and i almost blacked out once. i couldn't even get the shading and color done. i need to get back in there and finish it, but i just can't forget the pain.
another thing that hurt pretty damn bad was laser hair removal of my under arms. that shit will make you cry!

it's awesome once it's done, but you have to have about 5 treatments to get all the hair. each time you go you dread it more and more b/c it hurts so much.
i used to actually DO laser hair removal at a spa i worked at. it was super fun, but i can't imagine getting a laser "brazilian". that looked like it REALLY REALLY hurt.

when I woke from the anesthesia after having surgery on my broken foot (they had to put my 5th metatarsal back together with a plate and screws). they didn't give me enough pain killers, so I woke up shivering and feeling everything, my foot was exploding with deep pain. I wanted to scream, but I couldn't speak for some reason, a nurse noticed that tears were rolling down my face and asked me what was wrong and I managed to mumble something like, "mrrrmgh...hurrrrtsss". so she pumped me with more drugs and I was fine after a minute or so. ouchy.
Kidney stones earlier this year.

Getting a migraine while having kidney stone pain was so unlucky that I had to laugh. So I think the worst pain I have had was either the migraine that sent me to hospital for two weeks, which I can't remember too well so I don't think it counts, or a migraine I had when I was 13 or 14 and made my mind up that I was going to kill myself so I wouldn't have to go through the pain again.
But I could have just been a cry baby about that one.

Definitely childbirth.
I tried to do it without an epidural, but it hurt so much, after about 10 hours I was begging for one.
You know what no one tells you when you're pregnant?
That sometimes, when you get an epidural, IT DOESN'T WORK FOR SOME PEOPLE.
I didn't know that. All along I always had in the back of my mind, "well, if it gets to be too much, at least I can still get an epidural."
NO ONE TELLS YOU IT MIGHT NOT WORK!
So now you know.

I worked at a laser hair removal clinic. it feels sorta like a rubberband pulled back ans snapped against the skin very hard. and the thicker and darker the hair the WORSE that snap is.
I've had my underarms done (had the best results there been 3 or 4 years since I was treated and I only have a bit of peach fuzz under the arm..I don't usually shave it)...my upper lip, and my legs a few times, but only because I was used as a guinea pig to train new staff.
er...the number of treatments varies, but 5 (as Ace said) is good enough for most to get permanent reduction.
it's been a few years since i was in the business, so I'm sure it there have been advances, but when I was doing it, we could not garuntee results. it was permanent reduction, not permanent eradication of hair.
I never had the guts to do my bikini line. too many women complained about how terrible it was, and most of them were using numbing cream befoer the treatment.

I'm with Peachy on childbirth. I was actually surprised though how well i coped, the thought of getting something at the end of it definitely helps and you just focus on that.
Even with a shot of diamorphine and enough gas & air to make me feel like i'd had 10 double whisky and cokes didn't take away the fact that it hurt like hell.
I also had an epidural...which didn't work. Yeah, having a needle inserted into your spine isn't much fun either - especially because you have to keep totally still as it's put in.
But what you get at the end is worth every ounce of pain. And you feel as proud as punch.

wasn't as bad as that first one. I had to go to the emergency room and nthey shot me up with something and kept me overnight.
It was bad.

peachy, yorkie: how long were you gals in labour for in total?
Me - Eighteen hours. Because I ws induced, I didn't go through early labour. The problem with that is, when you have early labour, the contractions start gradually and build up, so your body's natural pain response kicks in in the beginning stages and grows along with them. With induction, it's like I was fine and suddenly WHAM I was steaming right along. Like 0 - 60 in 3 seconds, you know?
i am remembering what you said about epidurals. oh my. i would have thought getting a big fuck off needle into your spine would have been worth the freakin process.
To be fair, it is very rare that it doesn't work, and it did work on me partially, but only on one side of my body. Every contraction was like someone stabbing me in the left butt cheek with an ice pick. Which can I just say, sucks.

I hear ya girl. I've had the same trouble every month for the past 10 years, but usually if I notice in time and take loads of pain killers I'm ok.
Other times, like this morning, when no painkillers are around, I spend hours in bed, feeling nauseous, throwing up, sweating like a beetch, and screaming in agony wishing someone would put a bullet through my head to stop it all.
It's really horrible and I don't really know what I can do about it. The most annoying is if it happens when I'm not at home. I've fainted/thrown up/lay shaking on a sofa a couple of times at school/work. (n)

wow, that is a fall of looney tunes proportions. you're missing the road runner and a banana skin and you're there. yeesh. head scars are badass, though. well done.
touch wood i haven't experienced that much pain, certainly none compared to some of the stuff listed here. i'll share my facial scarring accident though. when i was a toddler and able to walk, i was obsessed with a little china ornament of a clown my mother had. anyway, it was on top of a chest of drawers. a pram was against said chest of drawers. i climbed up on to the pram so i was standing on it, and of course the pram went one way, and my FACE went the other, smashing into the ornament. my mum said there was blood everywhere and she thought it had blinded me. but it juuuuusssst missed my right eye. i know have a gnarly scar on the right side of my nose stretching out to a couple of mms before the outer edge of my eye. LUCKY. she still has the smashed torso of the clown. SICK BITCH.
i used to get incredibly bad period pains when i was younger, before i went on the pill. the pill virtually obliterated any menstrual pain i got and even when i was off BC they didn't return to the way it was before. my periods were extremely heavy and i had the worse restless legs. it was so bad the only thing that would relieve it would be repeated boiling hot baths at 3am. the temperature would ease the restless legs and then when it started to get lukewarm i'd fill it up again with the hottest water i could cope with.
i haven't had any broken bones. what sort of kid was i? pah!
Yorkshire~Rose
08-01-2008, 04:03 AM
I've not had any broken bones ever either. Made of tough stuff, me :D
I vividly remember an incident from when i was about 4.
My dad wanted to sharpen some garden shears and our next door but one neighbour had some special stone to do it (hey, i don't know the facts...bit too technical for me heh). So this bloke THREW this large stone thing across the gardens for my dad to catch. Pretty dumb thing to do at the time, but as it was mid air i came toddling out of the house and ran across the garden. My dad missed the stone and it cracked me straight on the head.
I don't remember the pain but i do remember looking not being able to see because of all the blood. And my white sundress had turned bright red.
I had to have lots of stitches and apparently the nurses had to restrain me in a blanket because i was freaking out so much.
In my teens/early twenties i was a keen horse rider so i've had a few falls here and there. The worst one was falling off a horse that got spooked by a plastic bag and bolted across a field. As i fell i kind of rolled under the horse and got kicked in the back of the neck. I went to A&E and had the usual xrays but luckily nothing was broken. I did have a rather impressive hoof print in the back of my neck though!

i think any woman with a kid would say labour pain, although i had pretty bad back pain earlier this year. but the thing about labour is it's relentless and increases in severity over a period of about 24 hours in my case.
i didn't do any drugs stronger than gas and air, shouting and gripping my husband's hand....until 24 hrs after it all started and they decided to do an emergency c-section. it felt like an ER drama. then when the needle went into my spine it felt like someone was pouring ice cold water washing away all the pain. woooooooh.
i had heard that epidurals don't always work very well. also i got to a point where i just didn't want to bother opening that space up in my head, waiting for the anaesthetist etc.
the pain of the cut in my tum wasn't too great :/
pain amnesia is a funny thing tho. i can't really remember how it all felt. i think that's quite common.

no doubt the worst pain i ever suffered. although first time felt ok with just a bit of gas and air-second time i was induced and it all happened in a couple of hours so i went from no pain to full-on hell in minutes and the poor midwife that just came on duty asked me if i wanted a nice hot bath or a tens machine-which at that very moment i would have happily shoved up her arse.but i'm a polite girl and just made noises.

I got my head hit with a *I'm guessing* a metal pipe years back when I was on a bender and I went back home and my roommate offered to stitch it up himself or take me to the hospital but I felt fine at the time. I was left to my own devices and when that wore off I woke him up right around sunrise for a ride to the hospital. The Dr. asked what happened then interjected "So the alcohol and drugs wore off and you decided to come to the hospital: Does that sum things up?" And they kept me overnight and that was that.

Blowing out my knee playing b-ball. That sucked so much. Its crazy that that was half my life ago but I still the remember the moment so clearly, I beat my man off the dribble put up a sweet finger roll and came down awkwardly on my left leg so my ankle rolled and caused my knee to bend about 30 degrees to the side, I heard a pop and crumpled to the ground like a sack of potatoes. The weird thing is that I no longer remember the pain at that moment- I just remember feeling like I had never been in so much pain in my life and that I was smacking my fist against the concrete to feel a different (less painful) pain. once in high school, I was in the gym and slam dunking by putting a chair underneath the hoop. I got to the hoop and I was hanging from it after a dunk and lost my balance when I landed and I used my right hand to catch my fall. My hand went backwards and my fingertips touched my forearm.
I also had a spade from a howitzer drop on my foot from 3 feet. The thing weighs 185 pounds. Amazingly it didn't break my foot but I was in severe pain.
Also when I was little, my brother dared me to jump from the top bunk with a sleeping bag on. I landed my collar bone right on the corner of my dresser and broke it.

I used to ride horses a fair bit so the falls are always interesting. First time I fell off, I somehow dropped under the hooves of the horse behind me and it cantered over me - I had a bruise the size of my head down one side for awhile. I smashed my face up a bit when a horse stopped dead right before a jump - I flew forwards and hit my face on its skull, right between its ears. Lots of blood and my instructor rushed over to see if I'd hurt the horse, typical horsey person reaction.
The most painful though was probably when I broke my collarbone - I passed out mid-jump and hit the ground and the fence as a dead weight. My instructor thought I'd broken my leg but I was too out of it to explain that I was yelling about the cramp in it, hah. Anyway the rule is unless you physically can't get back on on the horse to ride, you get straight back up - and I did. Rode jumps for another hour and a half with a pretty headstrong horse, then took it to the stable, groomed it, fed it, rugged it and everything (this involves a fair bit of arms-above-your-head activity). By this stage I was really sore, and knew something was up, so I went home and as I was pulling my jumper over my head to check out the damage I felt a huge pop - the thing was so busted you could see the lumps of bone under my skin. Ew.

I would of been that guy that laughed hysterically when these happened if I was there (then felt bad and asked if you were ok). I'm a bit of a dick, but shit its hard to un-train yourself not to laugh when people fall/ drop shit on themselves, I blame the cartoons for my total lack of empathy (sympathy?). But funny is funny...
:D
Bet you couldn't do it again!
I DARE YOU!

Oh it was funny. Both cases were, especially seeing me try to walk after the spade fell on my foot. Both times I didn't break anything.
I'll jump from my roof with a sleeping bag on now. Especially if it's a double dog dare.
did someone post that football video where the guys knee went backwards like a bird leg? eeeuuuhhh that makes me legs feel queasy
my most recent pain, not horribly bad but not good either, was when i went to the vaginacologist and she discovered that i have what i like to call an "uncircumsized cervix". so she had that open wide thing inside me for like 10 minutes just gazing into my hooha with amazement while i was trying to ignore the fact that i could feel air on my insides.
