I can still remember when I signed up here - 27 or 28 January 2001. That was at GrandRoyal.com because for some reason they wouldn't accept hotmail accounts on the old bbmb. Then shortly after the two boards merged and I got swallowed up in this huge community. I was but a shy 15 year old, still on a dial up connection who spent too much time indoors doing stuff like listening to music no one else liked and looking up porn on the internet... one... picture... at... a... time. Now teenagers have got redtube and youporn. They don't know how lucky they are.

I probably started by asking stuff like "Which is your favourite Beastie Boys album?" and "Who is your favourite Beastie Boy?" but soon turned my attention to this section with people swearing lots and talking about how big their shit was that morning.

Of course, Echewta was always there, omnipresent making glib jokes about Star Wars (which I still have never watched). abcdefz must have been there talking about how much he despises Tom Hanks (probably because his films are in colour) and the best sushi restaurant to go to in downtown San Fransisco. How very... quaint. Boomin'Granny was there, DipDipDive - I remember she posted a photo and everyone went WOW UR HOT. Then there was minton, seemed a bit uptight. TpK, Swedish? A bit odd. Blighty - I thought this guy was pretty cool when I was 15 or 16. He used to tell me about old school hip hop I didn't know about and how big his vinyl collection was at the time and also about the fact he had no television. Then he started sending me links to David Icke sites. Looking back he was a big ass. Does he still post here? There's probably laws against 30 year olds sending links to teenagers about lizard conspiracies now.

Anyway, this board became quite a feature in my life. As a growing lad in a bit of a provincial town in the North West of England it became my source of finding things out about music and life and so forth that I wouldn't necessarily have been exposed to. Of course I had friends at school that I used to socialise with but none lived too close so when I was at home I'd log on to here. In a way these "people" became "friends".

Then things really got serious. A new wave of people started joining or if they had already joined they became more prominent. mythago - he pretended he hated rap music but later admitted to me he quite liked it. Cosmo105 started talking about vegans and Mexicans and ended up co-habiting with Boomin'Granny who had a bowl cut. Did they marry? There was Beth who married BobbyD (who was always there since the start - I remember now). Drederick Tatum/Sprewell and Dusty Brain ran a campaign of terror which I sort of joined in with. I thought they were the bees knees so imitated their style of picking on the mentally handicapped and homosexual. And female. And intellectual. Looking back it was probably all a bit silly. psyzmac - now he was a giant wiener. Well meaning - but a ass. Of course there was the time that someone used Bob's account and posted a thing about him losing his virginity and the fact that he came so hard he thought he was going to shit the bed.

In those two years, as I turned 17 and 18 and was heading towards the end of school, I got pretty involved in this community. I even met venusvenus123 at Leeds Festival, twice, and in London. And I met that Lucy girl from Leeds at Leeds. I talked to quite a few people on msn: Tulla, venus, Sprewell, alruggs, KateD etc. Received things in the mail from people even.

I'd never admit it to any of my friends as I struggled through a tough teenagerhood - being a bit shy, a bit overweight, wasn't good at meeting new people etc.

Anyway it all pretty much ended as I went to University in London. Perhaps I logged on a few times, but never seriously got into it again. I think I was just better at life in the real world and didn't need this place so much.

I could rattle off a dozen of so names of people that I miss but will widdel it down to one person: Bobby D. I really liked him and he was an all round great guy. His PM's were the best and he certainly had a knack for telling stories.

It's sad that when couples pair up on this board the men usually bow out. Don't know why that's the case but that generally seem to be how things work out.
