i've often thought about this sort of thing. i only have a top 5 in mind though:
1. sleater-kinney - the woods
2. ted leo & the pharmacists - the tyranny of distance
3. the promise ring - nothing feels good
4. wilco - yankee hotel foxtrot
5. this is the one that rotates. sometimes it's jimmy eat world - clarity; other times it's the white album. feh.

Book: I'm not much of a reader at all but Sacred Hoops by Phil Jackson is pretty good.
