Swimmers are Australia's new rock stars. In the press it's swimmers, swimmers, swimmers. Biggest media reception upon arriving blah blah blah. Fucking swimmers this, swimmers that. I'll watch it if the swimmers all start doing badly. But fuck an Olympics. It's a big waste of time and effort as far as I see.

I'm not going to make fun of you. But it's not like ignoring the olympics and sponsor products is going to make any difference at all, to anybody but you. If you could somehow meld that justification into ignoring them for the plain truth that they suck, then I can dig.
I myself was tempted to ignore them on idealogical grounds, but I mean it's an awful lot to promise. If I announce it and then can't shit out the key, I'm likely to be on the receiving end of a cattle-prod if you get my drift.

I'm torn at the moment, I want to watch them, but with all the shit that China's pulling I feel as though I shouldn't.....
But even the Dalai Lama is saying that people shouldn't boycott them...
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article3562971.ece
The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, today dismissed calls from many of his own people for a boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing following the worst unrest in his homeland in almost two decades.
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/03/10/Dalai_Lama_backs_Olympics_more_freedom/UPI-37891205196964/
"Since such international sporting events, and especially the Olympics, uphold the principles of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, equality and friendship, China should prove herself a good host by providing these freedoms," he said, while reminding the international community it is important to work toward positive changes in China after the competition as well."
But at this point I feel like it's more than just Tibetans being screwed over by China's government, it now seems that it matters not who you are in China, you ARE being oppressed....
What to do......

I get the impression China is really fucking with rules, written and unwritten, to get things done. Like, I think only one of their girls
on the gymnastics team is within spitting distance of being old enough to legally compete.
Lip synching, stuff like that.
I'm pulling for Phelps, even if he is too damned skinny. :D
An athletes boycott is the second worst idea, after not watching it on television. Why do the dirty work for governments too scared/money motivated to do the job?
The only things that will make a difference are governments doing something, and people en masse refusing to buy Chinese goods. Neither of which will happen.
The boycott of the Moscow Olympics didn't bring the Wall down, the boycott of the LA Olympics didn't turn the US into communists. A boycott of the Chinese Olympics would not have turned their "slitty" eyes into round ones and made them more like us.

oh and i am NOT not watching the olympics because of race issues. NEVER. there are great human injustices going on over there mostly having to do with women and baby girls. it breaks my heart to even think about it. me not watching the olympics may not make a difference to the world, but it does in my heart and that's what counts for me. read these articles. throwing away their baby girls... it's just too much for me.

The medals are made from gold sourced from BHP Billiton's Chile mine.
That mine has been known for paying miners very very little, and a few years ago all the miners went on strike demanding fair wages. BHP even though they make squillions a year refused and tried to bring in strike busters, but the chileans stuck to their guns, and BHP decided they would pay a little more. But Still fuck all. Many Chilean miners have died there.

The athletes have nothing to do with China. They are there for the Olympics not to endorse China. They have trained their fucking nuts off - many for a decade or more - to be where they are and for people to call for these hard working athletes with a dream to boycott or claim they have blood on their hands is pathetic. As I said before; it's the governments who should be making the difference not athletes. Using sport as a political tool is lazy and selfish - did the Moscow or LA boycotts do anything? What about the ban on sport with South Africa during apartheid? Nope. Countries went right ahead trading with them but happy to ban their athletes from competing.
Out of interest where did the medals for LA '84, Seoul '88, Barcelona '92, Atlanta '96, Sydney 2000 or Athens '04 source their Gold from?
Leave the athletes out of it. Criticise the IOC but not the sportsman with a lifelong dream.

I think he means the freestyle altitude pool pooing schedule
After he retires from swimming, Michael Phelps might want to try his hand at competitive eating. The Olympic star recently said he consumes 12,000 calories per day, or 9,500 more than the FDA recommends for an active, young male.
Phelps has to keep his intake up in order to compensate for all the calories he burns during the 30-hours per week he spends in training. He told NBC that an average day might have the following menu:
Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes
Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)
Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)
Three years ago, Phelps told an interviewer:
I eat pretty much whatever I want. I don't have a strict diet. It's all about cramming in as many calories into my system as I possibly can. To be honest with you, I have a tough time keeping weight on.
Michael better be careful there. There's no surer way to turn new female fans into former female fans than by complaining about how hard it is to keep on weight.

what the fuck are grits?
Grits is a Native American corn-based food common in the Southern United States, consisting of coarsely ground corn. It is similar to other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. It also has a lesser resemblance to farina, a thinner porridge.
Hominy grits is grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy.

did you all see usain bolt break the world record in the 100m final? he was practically strolling through the last 10 metres, too! fookin' nuts.
oh and i was reading about the GB swimming gold medal winner rebecca adlington.. did you know the UK swimmers only make between 8 and 10 grand a year? they are professional swimmers so they literally don't do anything else but swim swim swim, meaning she doesn't have another job. that is her only income. i wonder what the US swimmers get paid? i don't mean to take anything away from their achievements if they get paid a lot more but i think the level of commitment is pretty freakin incredible, especially if you're only earning less than 10 grand a year. her boyfriend couldn't afford to watch her in beijing, so instead they are going to go on holiday when she gets back. if the UK want significant new british talent to make their marks in 2012 there simply has to be more funding in place.

There is actually a lot of funding in place. I guess the reason Rebecca Adlington is on such a low amount right now is because she is only 19 and not won anything before. A lot of funding is based on performance, so next year she'll have a significant rise in her grant. If you based funding on who you thought might do well then it would be open to a lot of abuse.
na§tee
08-17-2008, 05:31 AM
oh ok. i stand corrected.
i sort of figured it would be based on performance, but even still, if you're just starting off 8-10 grand is mere pennies, especially when they have to buy a swimming costume themselves that costs like 200 bucks, too. i guess it could be worse.
