Well, it wasn't such a big event. We just invited our closer friends and relatives and prepared a dinner. It was simple and great at the same time. A step forward in our 4 years relationship. I know she's the one so this was a natural decision.
Well done Paulo, I wish you both the very best for the future and I expect a wedding invite (y)

Congratulations, enjoy the roller coaster ride!
old school traditional, you don't hear people asking the father permission first these days.
Maybe because it's kind of insulting? If mr.p had asked my father for permission, I'd have known for shit sure there was no way in hell I was marrying him!

Congratulations. And I asked permission, so please don't anybody go thinking peachy is an all purpose litmus test all the time.

I just asked because of the moment and shit. He's never around. My fiancee's parents are divorced and he's a truck driver. He travels a lot and never spend some time with her. I just thought it would be kinda rude If I didn't ask him. Well, fuck it. We're engaged anyway.

why would that be insulting?
Because my father lives in the 21st century, where women aren't generally regarded as chattel anymore, at least not in this hemisphere.

^Sorry to pry, dear, but what sort of wedding did you have?
Was it a traditional 'white wedding' i.e. bridesmaids, churches, walks down the aisle, etc?

No. We got married on a boat in NY harbor. No bridesmaids, no church, no aisle, no white dress. No crap DJ playing the chicken dance or the electric slide, either.
edited to add: no rings, either.

re: asking the father for "permission": I think these days, it's more of a cute thing to do, and it's more like you're asking for the family's blessing...rather than actual permission.
that sort of stuff is out of the equation for me, as my father and I are ESTRANGED.
CONGRATULATIONS JUNKS!

Yeah, that's the case. It's not like I wouldn't get engaged if her father had said no. ;)
Thanks Dorothy!!! :p (y)

I think a bit of tradition is charming.
Though I would be offended if he asked my dad. Mostly because he knows my dad has no context to say yes or no. My sister would be the one.

But there's always the exceptions.
what makes you think you'll be lucky enough to be one of those?
i wonder if it's really true. surely there's some research somewhere. i don't care enough to look for myself but i'd definitely read it if someone else found it
