View Full Version : Fright Flight
In my whole 21 years of existence, I have NEVER been on a plane. I've always had this underlying fear of flying- ESPECIALLY after 9/11. I've had dreams where I panic mid-air, plummeting to my death. Ha.. :"\
I've been promoted. BIG promo, in fact. I'm to represent the company I work for in WA this September- which is a 4-5 hour flight from where I am (PA). I don't want to make it known I'm afraid- in fear they'll pull me from the trip 'cause I REALLY want to go! Just.. Not by plane. I've no other choice, however. :"( OH! And I'll be going fucking ALONE.
Any tips from you frequent flyers? Should I toke-up morning before/take some klonopin/stuff for motion sickness (although I don't really get sick in cars or boats)? What about that whole pressurized air-thing?
Thanks

i like to fly but i get airsick easy. you can take the non drowsy Dramamine before you go. make sure to follow the specific directions.
the pressure sucks for me too b/c i have ear problems already. it's def a weird feeling.
i first flew when i was 27. i was excited. i don't get scared, but i get nervous that i'm going to be sick the whole time.
my one suggestion... NEVER fly Northwest. NEVER EVER.

you'll be fine. air pressure is fine. unless someone tries to open a door. that would be bad.
i have to get on the EXACT qantas flight from london-melbourne (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7524733.stm) that developed a BIG FUCK OFF HOLE in its belly midair. NICE. on a plane for 26ish freaking hours and constantly paranoiding about oxygen tanks exploding.
eh, that probably doesn't help your fears. actually.. maybe it should since it landed safely and the pilots were super pros!
i don't get motion sickness on planes.. the bigger the plane you are in the more steady it is. you'll just be cruisin' along.
sup on some complementary booze and you'll be okay!

but washington is in the northwest :(
it really isn't as bad as it seems. i usually just keep a couple ibuprofin and some tums with me in case i feel a little sick when im getting off the plane. but omst problems go away once you step outside into the fresh air
Anybody in Spokane/near/around?! Wanna partay?
:(
OH GAWWWD! My nerves.

Spoka-vegas or Spo-compton... that's what we called Spokane back in college.
(My college was about an hour from Spokane in the middle of damn wheat fields so Spokane was pretty much the largest city near us. Go Cougs!)
uh....hummm...I'm trying to think of fun things to do in Spokane...there's the mall. whoooooo....well I'm sure it's grown, since I've been out of college for almost 10 years. yikes.

more people die in sharks than are eaten by planes each year

Toy -- could you grab a pal for a cheap flight somewhere between now and then? Just to give it a shot with someone you feel safe with?
For the most part, flying is pretty nifty.

I didnt fly til was 31 and i was nervous but it was only from liverpool to amsterdam - took just over an hour and it was fine - weirdly i was fine once we were up in the air which i wasnt expecting but i dont think i couldve handle a long flight first up. I think you should just get in a plane - go up and come down quick to get used to the feeling.

Man -- coming back from Costa Rica, I'd been in airports and on airplanes for so long that about 40 minutes from landing, I started to
panic because I just really, really, really had to get the fuck off that plane and I was trapped. No one noticed, though -- I started
focusing on my breathing and made myself think of something else. But that was a horrible feeling.

I have a cousin that was scared to death of flying who recently had to fly from here to L.A., his doctor advised him to take like, 2 klonopin the night before, as well as two the morning of the flight because he's a panic attack freak like myself. I think you'll be ok though, just bring some with you in case. The worst part is taking off, but once you get past that it's not so bad, I kept my head phones on and listened to my favorite music most of the time so I felt ok. Ask your mom or sister to go with you.

Hm.. That's actually not a bad idea, and I've got some vacay time to spare.
H&W? :"D

Two lemon or two lime? (LOL)
I'd ask Gestapo to go, but she actually works with me now and is leaving for a trip to Maryland right after I get back. (Gets to travel by car.. Bitch. And we can't trade off or anything like that.) As for my mom, well, you know- "Panic Patty". I'm actually more afraid of telling her than the of the actual flight itself. She's gonna make me even more anxious about it.
I dunno.. Maybe I should call my Uncle and see if he'd be willing to go. He's been to Hong Kong...
This is so gay, but I can't stop thinking about it- and I've got more than a month to go! Sept. 17th - 21st.
What if the plane's hijacked? What if I puke all over the person next to me? HUMAN ERROR?! GOD! If I die, will you guys make me an appreciation thread and have minton sticky it?
But hey, hey. If worst comes to worst, at least I'll get to meet Joe! :D

i used to live with a guy who flew and he was well, a big fan of drinking beer. and i am a strong believer that if he could live the way he did sometimes and still be a good pilot, so can the guys who fly the jumbo jets!
ps: you should fly to pgh and visit me!

Don't watch any "Airport 77" movies.
Do watch "Airplane".
Do not "Airplane 2".
If you ask for a drink, tell them that you want to open it.
When you land, make fists with your toes on the carpet. It's better than a shower and a hot cup of coffee.
You will be fine, the most dangerous part of a airplane flight is the ride to and from the airport.
