View Full Version : text snobbery

I judge people pretty harshly on their spelling and wording of things, punctuation, etc. etc. on here, reading emails, text messages. I have pretty much decided that you are a dumb ass if you can't express yourself in text form. (except for my friend who is dyslexic, she can't help it).

anyway, I think I finally decided that it's not a very good measure of a person. and maybe people that don't craft their words as carefully as I or the people I "respect" do, are maybe just less self-obsessed and are probably pretty alright.

I've yet to test this theory, but there is a bad-spelling exclamation point-using young man that has recently come into my internet life and I keep wincing at his mistakes, but all signs point to him being nice and not an idiot. I'm waiting to see if he mixes up your and you're on a regular basis. if so, the wedding's off! that's right, I'm asking him to marry me, because he's really tall and sometimes has a beard. DON'T TRY TO STOP ME.

well, my judgment on texting is more loose. it has to be, or I would hate everyone I know.

who really gives a shit? thats snobbery to me.

these types of people "wat abt ppl hu txt lk dis? i h8 dat." are one thing, thats rediculous.

but honestly unless its for work or in an academic setting and your really judging a person on there text writing in an outside setting to those mentioned thats pretty gay.

i never really bother to check my grammar when i type things online. even most of my emails lack proper capitalization and punctuation

I type too fast, never check and sometimes type in dialect but I never use text talk or any Internet related terms ie lolz, fail, n00bz.

I also have na§tee at hand to point out a few of my critical type errors (y)

Why shouldn't you judge someone based on their communication? What should you judge someone by? Their looks?

I think taking the time to spell something correctly and fully is a far better indication of a person, and how they want to present themselves to you, than shorthand. When you send a text to someone, you can't show your face, you can't show emotions (smilies can be faked), so you present yourself and your message with your style of writing. Are you going to take the time and effort for the person you are texting/emailing, or are you going to rush through it?

With predictive texting, it doesn't take any longer to write 'to' than it does to have '2', so maybe it's just a culture thing. As far as the new generation only speaking in text abbreviations, well, I wouldn't give them the time of day anyway, so nothing lost for me personally. I do think typing LOL is part of culture now, and acceptable, since it is used in an almost ironic way.

Typos are one thing, but mixing up 'to' and 'too', or 'you're' and 'your' is just lazy and unintelligent!!!!!!

.. but so is using multiple exclamation marks!

i am a text snob. we rejected this request (http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/0d5ebf40.jpg) we received via text from a girl who was enquiring about the spare room we had to rent. NO.
the thing is that all her using 2 and u and runningwordsalongtogether didn't stop it from being a two-message SMS. it completely failed in shortening the text. if you are really stretched and don't want to go into a second message, fine, one u can maybe be accepted, but i have 1000 free text messages a month, so i always run into two messages because i insist on splng thngs prprly.

a colleague of mine once sent a very regrettable email in which she typo-ed 'come' as 'cum'. 'can you cum to tuesday's meeting?' etc etc.

i LOLed pretty fucking hard for a good long time.

I can't deny that I smirk when I see a speeling mistake too. However, just knowing flawed my own spelling can be at times, I try not to be too critical. To me that's a key to the snobbery thing. I'm just not big into being a snob. To judge something or someone is to assign a value to them, and determine who or what is worth more. I'm better than this person because they type poorly and are not as smart as me. I'm better than this person because they don't make as much money as I do. They are better than me because they live in a bigger house. Nah, that's not for me.

I derive my self-worth by know that I am worth something.

I'm not trying to be greater than thou. My spelling is awful.

I don't think it's about spelling though, or the odd miss used word - it's about effort. You can spell something incorrectly and still come across as someone who wants to be taken seriously, or wants to give a good impression.

For people who email and post on message boards in particular; you've chosen this as your medium to present yourself, communicate, and let others know what you think of them, people are going to see how much effort you put in.

But then again 'no effort' is not always seen as a bad thing, especially in a laid back and hip-happening place such as this. I didn't mean that to sound spiteful.

No worries. I do it too, and I agree a lot is to do with effort. Maybe I came off a little too holy, I just think more people(not saying you) should focus more on themselves, and less on other people.

Loppfessor
08-06-2008, 10:18 AM
you can't be serious, on texting?

that's literally impossible, unless you have too much time on your hands.

I agree...I don't care much on text, message boards, myspace things like that. Now if I get an official e-mail at work and I see that shit I annoys the crap outta me

It was just the tone of you reply. I'm not attacking you mate, but sometimes you just seem like you want to evoke some sort of a spat by underlining your views with a little fuel. No beef here though.

For the most, I see this as a place of fun and retreat, so I never really worry too much about my spelling and grammar, but of course it's a different matter when I'm emailing work. It's not unusual for me to muse over the same email for 15 minutes carefully re-editing and checking it for mistakes.

If I was to judge, I'd judge on what was said rather than the way it was communicated.

Honestly why not? whats the difference? If you judge someone on their text communications, and someone else judges you on your looks does that bother you? They don't like the way you dress, your hair isn't hip enough, you're not slim enough, you don't put enough time into the way you look. Does that make you less of a person? Same thing with caring enough to write in a text. Do you see what I am getting at?

True. It's not like Kate Moss is ever going to be rejected at a model casting because she wrote Kaet Moss on her casting form. It can work both ways.

My point is really that both shouldn't be done.

Writing in less than perfect text and not having chiseled features, and not wearing gucci loafers shouldn't be criteria for truly judging who a person is. Like I said unless it's in a professional or academic setting where there are things of importance on the line, that's a different matter. But other than that someone shouldn't be judged on how they look, write ect. in their free time.

But, there's no need to single out someone because their level of effort doesn't match the level of your own.

It's like this person (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=1603506&postcount=8) the other day, I've never spoken to them before so they have no idea who I am or where I'm from but they felt the need to correct what I had written. Now I agree with the way that it should have be written but why bother pointing it out to me? I often sucumb to dialect when I type but do I really need someone to point it out to me? Adding the little smiley at the end like a masochist didn't help the matter either - 'I'm going to correct your grammar and then act like it was nothing'. Gee thanks, just read the thread title and add two web sites please, I was just interested in what other people found interesting on here :D

Good Evening my friend.Hope you are well today.I was wondering if you would join me in several pints of alcohol at the pub this evening.Maybe a good time would be 8 o'clock.I thoght of that time incidentley as there is a Foghorn Leghorn double bill on at 7p.m., so whence that cartoon delight has ceased , it should therefore leave enough time for myself to order a taxi, as walking would be a pain in the tits.

that sounds like how they talk on that show Square Pegs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiSIrgjarhE

that doesn't really have much like that, I was more thinking of a christmas episode when a teacher was like, "marjorie, I would like to ask you kindly if you could show our new friend sarah the correct way to the restroom". instead of, "please show the new girl the toilet".

Thank you so much for searching on Youtube for that clip.I have to ask if I may, which way is it to the restroom? I have a peculiar sensation in my buttocks that if I don't get there in the next few minutes I may have an accident and offend some of our classmates.

hmm, maybe I changed my mind and want to go back to being a snob.

I just had a hilarious all day text exchange with a friend of mine and it made me remember how funny and fulfilling a well-crafted phrase can be. no abbreviations baby! I fulled typed out "specializing in sex reassignment" at one point. high five.

I'm starting to think the first person I was talking about has high functioning autism. his spelling errors have gone down, but his phrasing is very oddly basic. like a robot. it's probably a robot.
