Did anyone else watch the opening to the Olympics on Friday night? In HD? Holy smokes. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

Dude, Mens 4X100 swimming was one of the best Olympic events I've ever seen.
I only have one pet peeve with the Olympics, but it's a biggie.
You cannot represent a country in the Olympics if you aren't from that country. It's ruining it.

Like most of the time you post something...:confused::confused:
I was mostly talking about the Americans playing for other countries.
It makes me wonder what we're going to do for 2012. How can we follow that?
Can you sense the lack of faith I have for my nation? :D

I say we should take the gazillion trillion £££s it's gonna take to try (and most likely fail) to beat that shit nd maybe use it so some of the world can have some CLEAN WATER TO DRINK. for fucks sake. i'd sooner see them clean up the thames to swim or dive in. or sort out the roads to run along. Not build some huge new stadium that'll be used for what afterwards? i'm not against the olympics-i think they're bloody great actually but i think they should chill on the flashy shit.

Australia is currently coming 4th in the medal tally. (5 medals so far).
Considering our tiny population (15 million, maybe a bit more), it means we are the greatest sporting nation on the planet.
I just did some sums, if we had the same population as the US, we would currently have 243 medals.
If we had the same population as China, our current medal tally would stand at 1064.
We rule.

Me too, for the same reasons.
The way they've treated local people is scandalous, wiping their houses and fields just for these games
and the promises of compensation have just been thin air
We need to add 'stabbing' to the roster of events, possibly Javelin stabbing. We'd win gold for sure. Maybe the 4x100 relay could be a knife instead of a baton? More knifes for 2012 I say.

Why are you proud of that? What did you do?
Plus aren't your figures wrong because of all the money in our federal budgets that go into sports and sports research? I don't think anybody in the world spends what Australia does (relatively speaking).

We really envy that, I've seen it written a few times that (thinking forward) the UK needs to employ the same methods and find similar funding.

Well we don't spend money on the river murray, thats for sure.
What did I do? Sweet fuck all. Thats part and parcel of being a sports loving couch potato. Hop on the gravy train.
Is it wrong to be proud of one's country? I mean I think patriotism is a disease, but not being proud of your country's sporting achievements is un-australian quite frankly.

News Flash.
No matter where the Olympics are held, there are going to be some serious issues with the hosting nation. Or the nations that win the most medals. Or the fact that Coca-Cola will be all over it. Or that McCain will run his stupid commercials bashing Obama.
Not to say that people shouldn't be concerned about whats being addressed here as important issues but seriously. The Olympics are one of the few cool get the world together kinda of stuff. Enjoy the moment.
If anything, the Olympics in China has brought even more attention to Tibet.
And you missed the 4X100 mens swimming that Rob brought up that was absolutely stunning.

Can someone tell me why the Divers and Swimmers love to take so many showers? It's not that I mind watching the 20yo female synchronized divers shower together, but it's like as soon as they all get out of the pool they immediatley all run over to get a shower.
I'm sure there's a legit reason for it.

even though I'm not supporting the Olympics by being one of the millions tuning in to jump their rating or go on about corporations supporting the event...mm I think what I do is just watch the Olympics in a non-profit thingy. Youtube. (y)

Given that TV ratings are measured by homes with peoplemeters (and assuming your home doesn't have a peoplemeter), you'll probably contribute more to their 'rating' by watching it in a measurable medium like the internet.

Chlorine.
I considered that, but they seem to shower for an abnormally long time for just chlorine. And wouldn't one shower after the event is over suffice for washing chlorine off?
I think there's more to it than just that, like they're either warming up, or cooling off,
...or having a wet suit reduces their splash by three water droplets upon entering the water or something along those lines.

08-12-2008, 05:06 PM
We get the benefit of usually seeing the matches edited for television. I don't believe they go up right after each other and if you are diving against 20 teams, you got a while to wait. Chlorine can dry your skin out as well as make your hair turn colors. I assume they wash off because they have a long wait.
Plus, who wouldn't do whatever it took for soft skin?

I could have dreamt it but i'm sure i saw a news clip yesterday talking 'bout the girl who did the solo at the opening ceremony-that she was miming. the girl who was really singing may not have been so "cute" or something??
i was so happy to see a little girl being such a focal point in it seeing as girls aren't as valued as boys due to the one baby only thing. (i'm really good at saying the wrong thing so if that's offensive it's certainly not meant that way*covers head with arms incase of furious backlash*)

I read that as well. Apparently the girl who actually sang was not 'perfect' and it would not have been 'what is best for the country' to have the less-than-perfect girl's face seen around the world.
Nice.
