my 5 year old is a racist.

I wanted my young girl to see the Olympic gymnastic events, but they were always coming on after her bedtime, so I found a section of gymnastic events available "On-Demand" with my cable co.

So, I sit down with my young gymnastic enthusiast and showed her some of the best routines from the China 08 Olympics crew. My girl watched with amazement during the routines, but then grunted at the end and asked where the Americans were. Again, I showed her another routine from China's gymnast, Again, she made comments , "why China, where are the Americans?" as she grunted. I told he it was ok to like China, and she responded, "I don't think so." So I asked what was up, and she told me that the Chinese had poisoned her toys with bad paint. I told here that was just a few people and not all Chinese, but she ended that with "I don't know"

My two year old is all about identifying colours at the moment, but she's having a difficult time with "black" and "brown". Because the black people she knows are, well, brown. I'm not entirely sure how to explain this to her...

My kid was 3 at the time. The first time he had really interacted with "black kids" was when I took a job teaching/coaching at a school in the city.

My son and I were in the locker room just as practice was getting ready to begin. We had never discussed races or the terms black/white. They had never come up.

As the last player walked out of the locker room, my son looked up to him and tapped him on the leg. "You're brown," he said, "you're brown and we're pink." We had a good laugh.

He was/is so innocent. He saw the physical difference, but to him, it was just a color and not a race. Just a little difference that he noticed w/o all of the negative associations. Never forget that moment.

FWIW, I never "corrected" him and the topic has never been brought up again. The Olympics have provided us the opportunity to teach him about our "country" and that concept. Before that he only knew we lived in Las Vegas. He's enjoyed the olympics.

The Tipping Point introduced me to this. Kids have a really hard time with double meanings. It really confuses them, their brains can't handle two different words meaning the same thing, or one word having multiple meanings. Just give it some time, it will work itself out.

Your daughter isn't a racist, she's a victim of adults running their mouth without thinking about how a child might comprehend those words.

She's what's known as unconcious icompetent when it comes it race or different cultures. She doesn't know what she thinks is wrong or off, she just knows it. You have the ability to fix that as a parent.

It's not like she said they're different, or they're ugly. She just thinks the Chiense fucked up her Dora the Explorer and put GHB in her AquaDots. Now you just have to explain China didn't do that, bad people in China did that.

What color is God's skin?
What color is God's skin?
I said, "It's black, brown, it's yellow
It is red, it is white;
Every man's the same
In the good Lord's sight."

Noah used to say that people were the color of shirt they were wearing. It always ended up being a good laugh with black parents when explaining to them why my son was saying "hey little white boy, do you want go down the slide with me?" to their child.

ok, so I do not really believe my daughter is a racist, and yes I did explain to her that this was done buy a few people, that may have well been American.

My girl plays soccer on a co-ed team with Asians, Black, Spanish and Mexicans and she has never even realized that different color means anything. She knows the players buy name and that is the only way she refers to them.

However, I was happy to see here bring the toy story up and see she remembers what she hears. I am sure I told her, "don't put that toy in your mouth, Its made in China!"

I just thought it was funny.
