If you had the time, inclination and funds, what class would you take just for the fun of it and why?

Over the past month I have been thinking about enrolling in a weekly evening class at one of the local colleges, to learn something new and to just be around different people and such. (Now that I work from home, I need to find ways to get out more!) I've actually been really surprised at the range of things available to me, within a fairly short distance; I've got some very interesting things to choose from.

For example, I could learn to play blues harmonica. I hadn't thought of it before, but actually it might be kind of a cool party trick to have in one's pocket. Probably messes up your lipstick though, and they get all full of spit don't they... so maybe not that one.

Or I could learn to make various things out of papier mache, which I could see being sort of fun. Actually really there are loads of beginner art courses in all manner of media. I did think about maybe life drawing; I never really did learn to draw properly and it's frustrating sometimes that I can't make what I see in my head come out the end of a pencil.

And of course there are many language courses, I do like the idea of taking another language, maybe something really different (for me) like Arabic or Turkish or Gujarati or something. Just to see what it would be like.

I think though I have decided on taking a sewing class. My mom taught me when I was a teenager but I've not sat down at a machine since then, and I'd love to be able to make little pinafore dresses and things for Mathilda, as well as maybe some of my own skirts. Plus I have so many friends and relatives with little girls, it would be nice to be able to give them special, unique gifts. So I think if I did a basic course on using a sewing machine and working with commercial patterns, it's something I would really use and maybe I'll ask Santa to bring me my own machine for Christmas.

i have thought about this a whole lot actually.

the main thing that i would love to take is something related to photography. what holds me back now is the ability to invest in a real camera to be able to use for the class and thereafter.

and while not necessarily something through a university, i've always wanted to take classes in things like archery and various martial arts.

mine is a little different.

i've always felt that i missed my calling. if i had the funds and the time, i'd go back to school for 8 years and become a chiropractor. i really feel that was what i was supposed to do in life but missed the boat by a few years.

I'm thinking of enrolling to learn a new language, or go back and learn Irish properly.

Although its officially our national language its not used in day to day life and its very poorly taught in schools, but i'd love to be comfortable at speaking the mother language.

Otherwise, Japanese or Chinese I think.

aceface, how old are you? it is never too late. i envy people who know exactly what they want to do. if i was to have thatknowledge, no matter how old i was, i would try my damnedness to make it happen, even if it meant saving up for years or going part-time, i'd do it.

i really admire mature students who go back to university or people who decide on a massive career change.. good for them for taking the risk.

if i won the lottery i would probably go back and do a full-on degree. if i wanted to continue what i was already offered a scholarship in, i would do my phd in film and television studies, but i would fear that would be a tad esoteric. so i would probably go and retrain, do something entirely different - a science, or further my psychology degree. i would have loved to have been a neuropsychologist or a clinical psychologist. if i didn't have to worry about a job i would focus on getting work experience in those fields before doing a masters/phd. yup.

but on the more realistic evening tip (btw.. blues harmonica is fucking awesome! do it!).. hmm. i've been looking at things to do in bristol because i will be largely friend-less and want to get involved in stuff. like jabumbo photography would be my first choice but i don't have a proper digital SLR at the moment - will save up for one when i get back from holiday.

i want to do the initial training in adult literacies learning (ITALL) training. that's something i feel i would enjoy and if i got far enough in the accreditation i could be a volunteer tutor. that, or counseling.

ooh, and on the more therapeutic side.. massage! i want to know how to massage properly. i want to be the person who people DEMAND to do massages at parties, ha.

^ i'm the girl they demand massages from! i realized i loved chiropractic while i was in massage school.

i dunno, 8 years of school... i just don't think i could do it. by the time i was done i'd be 40 and spent most of my 30s in school. it's just too much, i think.

I always said that if I ever won the lotto or something like that all I would do is travel and take random classes in things that interested me...

Maybe a rock climbing class, just so I could do it without having to pay climbing fees at City Wall.

I'm also interested in paper making.

painting or computer stuff. I really should've followed my interest in animation too. and I took one computer type class that I got an A+ in. it was senior year by then though, so I didn't get a chance to pursue it.

I think I might want to learn to be a mechanic too.

I did Japanese for a year at an evening class which was good fun. I would have stayed another year but it got complicated with work.

I suppose I would like to try something 'arty' as I never even tried at school.

My Grandparents and teachers always said that I should have been a doctor, but I've always wanted to be an artist or designer.

I wish that I could have half and half. Like having the design job but the Doctors salary.

Other than that I'd have liked to study psychology.

Other, other than that I fancy doing a few evening classes in pottery and sculpture. I'd like to get back to my arty farty roots (y)

I'd like to do alternative therapies - reflexology etc. Or i've always wanted to have a bash at pottery - that wheel looks like good fun.

I took life drawing class a few years back at night school. Once i'd got over the initial embarrassment of sketching a strange blokes todger, i loved it and found i was rather good at it.

My GF just started quit going to a chiro who practices (and I use the term loosely) Applied Kinesiology. What a bunch of shit.

it really depends on the doctor when it comes to chiro. i dare say that they wouldn't be given the title of Dr. if it wasn't researched as a proven therapy.

i will say that when i worked for a chiropractor, he used to tell me that certain schools taught a more... flighty way so some of those Drs. came out thinking chiropractic was more of a religion and complete way of life instead of the joint therapy it really is.

maybe she got a wacko.

kinesiology is a really cool practice, though, if done right.

I've been thinking thinking about this-next september i'm hoping to do an access course to take me up to a-level standard as i didn't bother with them at school, and then do something else.

I did think about trying to study to do drug counselling but i'm starting to think i don't have the patience or enough sympathy for that. i think i'd just be GET A GRIP AND GET THE FUCK OUT so might pass on that.

Am actually really serious about becoming a plumber

But if money and time were no object i'd do drum lessons and build a studio in my garden with a huge fuck-off drum kit.:)

If I had a car, I would definietly do that. It's probably a pretty employable skill, anyway.
