so i know some of you are working out in your own ways, as am i. i thought maybe we could use this thread to share our workouts and to motivate each other to keep doing it.

yesterday i did this ab workout and it was intense. if you really want to work them hard try it!

we have a 'biggest loser' thread.. which i guess is more aimed at weight loss but it has loads of fitness shite in it, too.

i post there every 6 months or so going "hrrmph, oh boy, i've put on the chunk.. maybe i should do something about it" or "actually.. i cannot be fucked. pass the cider!"

i am swimming a lot now though, four times a week for about an hour a pop. i'm no michael phelps but it's aiight. a tad on the freakin BORING side though. i want to do more group sports. i want to hit people with hockey sticks.

i don't really do the gym thing, outside of the occasional push-ups and sit-ups

but instead i just go run. and then run some more. yesterday i did 5 miles, today will probably be 3 or 4, and i will hopefully hit double digits on friday or saturday

the treadmill was invented to be the most boring activity one can put yourself through

if i ever touch a machine in the gym, it would have to be the rowing one. nothing else is even worth a thought because you can do it all outside

AceFace

see i can't get motivated to do it outside. that little timer helps me so much. i'll kick it in gear and run for 2 mins and then back to walking fast. if i did that outside, i'd give up my run within 30 seconds b/c that little timer isn't there.

i wish i could read while running, but it makes me motion sick.

I dont care for the gym nor a regular routine. I mix it up 3 - 5 times a week. Hiking, running, jump roping, stairs with fire gear or mostly circuit training. Its amazing all of the exercises you can do without a machine.

Favorite ab exercise, planks. Try it. Rules. \m/ Hold it for over a minute. Dare you. Dare you not to sweat. Dare to keep kids of drugs.

I didn't do anything since school (13 years ago). I used to be in the rowing team and we had to go there every day (even on weekends)...

Anyway, in July I started to work out with Wii-Fit every day. And it is really good, because you can do it at home. The motivation is your own weight - you have to check your bmi, weight and fitness-age every day and of course you don't want it to go up. I work out at least 30 minutes a day now and the exercises are not bad (some are really exhausting even).

The Wii even got me and my husband to go jogging in our vacations (4 mornings before breakfast), because we didn't want to weigh more after the vacations. We managed to go 20 minutes! :)

And it's cheaper than going to a gym for about 50-70 EUR a months....

Bob
08-19-2008, 01:21 PM
i used to go to the gym regularly but i fell out of the habit. i really enjoy lifting weights, i had a good program going and i was seeing pretty good results (it was a strength program, so i was seeing my lifts go up tremendously; muscles come later, sorry ladies) but then i got busy with exams and junk, and then i had an internship, and i never really got back on schedule. i really wish i had a free weight set in my house; a bench, a squat rack, a barbell, and weights, that's pretty much all i need to do everything i'd ever need to do. it only costs around $500 i think, i could probably get something even cheaper off craigslist or something, but i just don't have room for it in my apartment, and i'm in a stage where i'm constantly moving between apartments, and something like that seems like it would be a pain to move around constantly, so i'm holding off until i get something a little more permanent...but some day...

i've also been trying to get into the habit of running. my classes ended and i'm on vacation so i figured i'd start getting into a routine now. i was supposed to do 3 miles today but instead i slept till 1:00 pm and looked at internet porn, so...yeah, tomorrow probably

I am getting into running a few times a week. Theres a bunch of stairs around here because I live in the hills so I go up a few of those, quickly one by one or two at a time. I have def been feeling it in my legs in addition to the running.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to sign up for a marathon training thingy that starts in October. The marathon is in March...they train you and welcome beginners or advanced people. It's also an aids fundraiser thing so you raise money and all that jazz. I think it's just the kick in the ass that i need, not only will I get in shape but it will be for a good cause and I will have coaches to help me along and meet some new people. I'm nervous though, 26 miles! I think there's a half marathon though so I might do that instead.

I'm sure you will...alternate days between the cardio and the weights though, and you lose weight faster.

I never follow an actual time as far as running. I usually do it by song...run for a song, walk for a song, etc. It helps not to be watching the minutes pass by. But I also run outside around a lake so I have a certain area of ground I have to cover to be able to get home!

i've gotta get in there today. maybe i'll just do cardio.

Bob

the best way to lose weight is resistance training (weight lifting). it's the most intense exercise you can do and it burns the most calories, so if you want to lose weight, that's what you should do. cardio is considerably less effective (but it's still very good exercise in its own way).

many women are afraid of weightlifting because they're afraid they'll get bulky, but no, the truth is it's very hard to get bulky, even on purpose. the odds of it happening accidentally are very low. you can lift weights and still look like a woman. for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XEI2InseCg

she's doing very manly lifts, and lifting very manly weights, but she's clearly not freakish looking. getting big is hard to do, it won't happen by accident, so that's not a reason not to lift weights; it's as good for women as it is for men.

there are of course, other reasons not to want to lift weights, such as access to equipment, and risk of injury, but if you really want to lose weight, i strongly suggest that you give weightlifting a try, because it's just the best way to do it.

free weights are a lot better than cable weights, and free weight exercises that incorporate as many muscles in your body as possible are better than smaller ones. squats, deadlifts, and bench press are the best ones (and also the most dangerous if your form is bad, so you do want to know what you're doing).

like i said, it's not like cardio is bad or anything, and it's still great exercise for its own sake, but it's not a terribly effective way to lose weight (especially if you don't do it intensely; taking it easy is a very bad way to lose weight).

and of course, the other, even more important piece of the weight loss puzzle is diet; you can exercise all you want, but if you eat like shit, it won't really make a difference. i don't know as much about diet though.

gday joel knows a lot more about all this than me, maybe he's around somewhere

it'sso weird how everyone has conflicting ideas on how to lose weight.

Bob

i'm not a personal trainer, but that definitely completely contradicts everything i've ever heard about the subject (and one of the things i've heard is that some personal trainers give bad advice because if they tell you something that you don't want to hear, you aren't going to sign up for their gym, so...just saying).

the thing about fitness is it's objective, it really isn't like, say, fashion, or art, where it's all subjective and everyone can have differing opinions about what works and what doesn't; it's kind of scientific, there are things that are effective and things that aren't, it's biology. i guess it could be possible that some peoples' bodies wouldn't respond the same way to the same things, but i dunno, i have a hard time believing that that trainer was right.

How to lose weight:

Eat less, move more. Simple.

More calories have to go out than come in, whether you expend them by walking, weights, swimming, shagging, wanking, jumping, yoga, pilates, yogalates, jogging with a silent 'j' etc. etc.

Bob, what you seem to have picked up on with the weights thing is that if you have more muscle mass your metabolic rate is higher - thus you expend more calories when you are 'resting'. Just doing a weights session doesn't make you slimmer. In fact if you want to actually burn fat there and then doing a session of 2 hours plus at a low intensity will actually cause you to burn fat whilst you exercise - an example of this would be an all-day hike.

So back to the first point - eat less, move more. Do a few weights as well and you'll burn a few more calories.

Dorothy Wood

I'm having a dickens of a time losing weight, I've managed to not gain any though (besides packing on a few during vacation) and I've dropped a pants size.

I used to lift weights at home and I felt like they made my arms look fatter, so I stopped. cardio is really the only thing that gets the fat off for me.

I think everyone knows by now that I ride a bike, at least 60-80 miles a week. I also stand all day, walk a lot, and do work that requires lifting of heavyish things. I need to do more core strengthening and basically keep eating less, methinks. otherwise, my legs are rock hard this summer, and my butt rules. high five. overall I'm a lot fitter than many of my much thinner friends, bleh, story of my life. I think my body just likes to be fat. :/

i was under the impression that you burn more calories with resistance training than cardio though, is that wrong? for example you would burn more calories in a 30 minute lifting session than a 30 minute jog or run.

i was also under the impression that even within cardio, higher intensity exercise was better than low intensity for fat loss. for example i was told that the best way to lose fat doing cardio was high intensity interval training, where you alternate sprinting with all (well 90%, they say, but who can really calculate that while sprinting) your might and jogging every 30 seconds for up to 15 minutes (not right away, you work up to it). that you'd lose more fat doing that than you would on slow and steady long runs. was that not right?

i should say for the record, in case anyone was wondering, that i'm not obsessed with losing fat or anything, that isn't my goal, i don't have much fat to lose and i'm not anorexic, it's just that when you learn about fitness, you learn about losing weight, so i figured i'd share what i thought i'd learned.

True, you might lose more fat doing the interval session because of a number of factors such as increasing your metabolism for a longer period after exercise due to the high intensity or burning more calories in the session than the equivalent low intensity period. Same with the weights session: you might burn more calories doing 30 minutes lifting than 30 minutes jogging, but it depends on you. One mans 30 minutes lifting could be some really weak weights, lots of sitting down and high fiving his friend, whilst another mans 30 minute jog could be the 10,000m in the Olympics.

My reference to the long and steady sessions is to do with the nergy systems being used by the body. Very short intervals use your anaerobic system - no oxygen is needed and your creatine stores are used, other intervals - perhaps up to 10 minutes or 20 minutes would use glycogen stored in the muscles and liver in comination with the oxygen. As you start to go for longer, and at lower intensities your body starts using up to 60 or 70 per cent of energy from your fat stores.

My science is very approximate, I'm sure there is a website out there which will explain it better.

But as long as you eat less and move more.

I did the ALDI-Diet last year. (No, that's no joke.)

The thing about it is, you can cook stuff that you find in any supermarket. You don't have to buy exotic stuff which will cost a fortune every week. And they do the recepies with every-day stuff as well (e.g. eat 1/2 pizza and combine it with a fresh salad). So you won't develop ravenous appetite for such things (pizza, chocolate, etc.).

After a few weeks you really learn to cook less, as you know what has how much calories. I lost 10 kg in 3 months and it didn't come back. BTW without moving more. Since I started working out I didn't lose additional weight. I will admit though that I felt very hungry during the first 1 or 2 weeks as I reducesd my calories from about 2200 to 1200 a day.

Those stairs are at the Mont-Royal, a nice little mountain in the center of my city, Montréal. It is 250 steps up, so 500 steps one run. I started with 3-5 run , now my cardio is good and i am doing 10 run, 3000 steps everyday.

It is really good and i see the pounds go down quickly. Stairs climbing is more effective then jogging as it burn twice as much fat. Good for the cardio as you have to move all your weight up .

I asked my sister what burns more fat - cardio or weight lifting.

The key to burning fat is keeping your heart rate up. A combination of cardio and weights is best to burn fat.

However, if you had 1 person only doing cardio and one only doing weights, the person doing cardio would lose more weight and fat.

steps are a really great workout, i think. we have a ton of them around here....

although, rather than do them i just run anywhere and im going up and down hills all the time, so its just as effective. i can only imagine how easy it would be for me to run somewhere that is totally flat

my body effing HURTS today. i've been taking these hour long classes at the gym on MWF. it's called Body Combat. Basically martial arts movements along with boxing. it's intense. i've been taking the classes for about a month and i've finally gotten to the point where i don't hurt a lot after... except today.

here's a "typical class"

i hope all this work pays off in the long run!

mikkizee, where's those pics? ;)

who else is exercising or training for something?

it's going ok. i gained a lot b/c my thyroid went screwy. my Dr. warned me that it wold take a lot of extra work for me to lose weight due to that damn thyroid. i've lost 8lbs. but i'm still not to my normal weight, which is really depressing.

i can see definition in my upper body and that's awesome to see results. i've lost an inch off booty and belly but i'm greedy and need more off.

i don't want to be skinny or anything. i just want to get back down to my "normal" weight and be smokin' toned. if i can lose the wieght, then i should be toned with this crazy exercise i'm doing.

thanks for asking!

**i've been working out like crazy at the gym for about a month and a half, dieting for about 3 months.

I am currently taking a wheatgrass cure, this plant has many propriety and one of them is to regulate the thyroid gland. But you cannot take pills with this cure.

go check it out.

:( my thyroid went screwy b/c i went off my meds and tried naturally medicating it. i have an auto immune disorder that makes it impossible for me not to take the meds.
