I wouldn't call 17 inches "tiny". It's bigger than my home computer screen, and it's crystal clear and shiny as a mirror. :)

I have the 15" macbook pro too. Honestly I think 17" laptop's are too much if you're gonna be traveling even semi-regularly. But as a what they call "desktop replacement" its ok. I like my macbook pro though, Its super-great!

It's called a Dell Inspiron 1720.

Windows Vista
2ghz Pentium Dual Core
2gb RAM
DVD RW and all that shit
256mb GeForce graphics
Beautiful 17" widescreen

And it was only like £400 ($800) which isn't much for a laptop.

I think it's cool. Will take a bit of getting used to but it looks nice (I've gone for a black/dark red theme) and nothing on your whole computer ever takes more than like 3 clicks to get to. (y)

Agree on Vista. Finally a Window OS that doesn't crash and burn frequently.

I went for black-everything-I-could-without-being-illegible because I am using an Alex Ross background:

I am a mac user, but only at work. Macs are shit. Really shit. This is coming from someone who uses them for 8 hours a day.

At home, it's PC all the way. I used to know everything about computers because I used to play lots of cutting-edge PC games during the 90s at a time when hardware specs changed drastically weekly - I could tell you precisely why one videocard was better than another for example. Now, I'm just too past it to be honest. 95% of modern PCs can do pretty much anything, so there's no real need to keep check on hardware specs.

If you bought it new, and it cost a fair wedge of money, then chances are it'll do what you tell it to without much hassle.

Will it toast my bread and cut off the crusts?

Can anyone answer the question of why Mac feels they can get away with those abrasive commercials? It would be so easy to counterattack them especially with their poster boy of choice. Why isn't anyone assaulting them back?

Freebasser

Because the people who enjoy using them are too mashed off free wine from their local art gallery to care.

go to system preferences and make the right side be the right clicker. That's what I did. But the laptop is easier. Just tap with two fingers to do right click. I don't have much to complain about wiht this laptop.

Freebs are you working on g3's?!?!

I love macs, I've always preferred the uncluttered feel to the OS. Plus most pc laptops encompass the ergonomics of a house brick (although there are some almost sexy looking models knocking about these days).

G4s and the new 24 inch iMacs.

They are shit and can't handle anything Illustrator throws at them.

camo

Illustrator doesn't use that much memory, well unless your piece has a gazillion points and it's chugging away on the video card.

Photoshop is usually the most memory sensitive.

I want to know what it's like having a new laptop as a computer. I want a 'desktop substitute'; something that is 10 times better than our old home pc. A laptop can be that substitute? I really wish to get one, as this fucking thing runs on kerosene it's so old and shit. Fuck you my computer.

Lex Diamonds
08-28-2008, 04:38 AM
Yeah, I was basically you till I got this badboy. My old computer is like 5 years old, one of those ones that you have to turn on then go do something else while you wait for it to load up. It really pissed me off so I used to hit it a lot, which in hindsight probably only exacerbated things.

I remember I used to be quite into PC gaming and you woulda had to spend like £1500 to get a nice laptop around 5 years ago. But for £400 this baby can do pretty much everything I'd ever need, I'm thinking it should last me a good 10 years or so, if all goes well. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you got wireless at home. Online gaming and porn in every room of the house, what more could you ask for? (y)

ps
It has a built in mic and webcam, with hilarious features like "man voice to woman voice" and a selection of cartoon facepaints/masks. Worth the asking price alone.

Yeeah you know I've never even set up a wireless router, I'm so over the hill. But I want to, for a laptop if I get one, the wii, LIVE, such and such. I'd be tempted to get into some PC gaming. You reckon a laptop could cover those needs?

na§tee
08-28-2008, 04:48 AM
a laptop that cost 400 quid isn't going to be a PC gaming powerhouse.

but of course you can get laptops that have high specs for PC gaming if you have the moolah to spend on it. what do you think all those dorks use for their LANS?

Oh for sho. COD4 is pretty much the best looking game out right now and this baby will run that comfortably. Like C-bizzle says, laptops aren't generally the way to go for hardcore gaming but this one is good enough that it will run most things out right now. It came with Office and a shitload of other media software too so it can do pretty much anything I'd want it to.

I prefer a laptop at home for such reasons as - space saving, being able to sit on the couch/bed whilst working and they also double up as a heater in the cold winter months, mmmm warm legs.

Just make sure that your graphics card is decent and that the laptop is given time to cool down before you put it away when you've finished using it )if it doesn't have a fan). If it does, then make sure it stays clean.

Also parts for laptops are always more expensive than their desktop counterparts so be ready for a hefty bill when something fucks up.

Oh and watching dvd's in bed on a sunday morning is good too.

Thats why you need to make sure the graphics card is future proof for a least a few years. It's part of the mother board and in most instances can't be upgraded.

You can always add ram though, so it's not all bad.

Lex Diamonds

As a designer I'm kinda limited to a mac because all of my apps are the mac versions. Your laptop probably has a shit load of better specs than mine and cost three times less.

Still, on the bright side I probably have bigger guns than you due the sheer weight of mine

iMacs are consumer computers...if you're doing stuff for work, surely you should be using the Professional machines?

Im genuinely surprised you think they are shit and can't handle the work load..i know tonnes of designers who wouldn't go near a PC and not due to the admittedly nonsensical designers must use Macs hype shit but because they can handle the work load needed...

That makes no sense. Just about every PC is different, how do they know it can't handle the load? I take it if they don't go near them, they can't have a look under the hood.

Thats why you need to make sure the graphics card is future proof
There's no such thing as future proof in the tech industry.
