So it seems the indie rock gods Sonic Youth are looking to ditch their major lable (Geffen, which is under Universal) they've been with since 1990 and return to an independent label (they were on SST before jumping to the majors).
There's no word who they're signing with, but the rumor mill speculates Matador or Domino. Time will tell.

Thoughts on this? Though they've never artistically suffered when they switched to a major label, I think it's a nice gesture to see these veterans return to their roots.

Glad to see it myself, now if we could only eliminate SoundXchange here in the states the RIAA could die a proper death finally.

This could bring about some interesting products from SY (vinyl editions, ep's, release strategies)
But you're right....Geffen has been carrying them since they became "big". They survived the post-punk, pre-grunge, grunge, post-grunge, and I guess emo trends.
They've mellowed out but can still create an intelligent, original, and twisted riff
It'd be great if they went with Dischord, there are tons of bands on there that definitely were influenced by them and of course Fugazi

maybe another daydream nation is awaiting outside the corporate contract
Its time to go round
A one man showdown
Teach us how to fail
Were off the streets now
And back on the road
On the riot trail
teenage riot is in the top five songs I've ever seen a band perform live

It's official. Sonic Youth is going with Matador Records.
Good move!

i dont care HAHAHHAAHA
Matador seems like the only indie label big enough to handle Sonic Youth.
I honestly thought they were just gonna self-release with their own Goofin' Records imprint. They're a big band, I figured they could handle it and keep 100% of the profits.
On another note, I would have loved to be at this: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/141955-moore-mascis-verlaine-cline-play-fender-show
Best guitar ever.
