View Full Version : So what did you make of Obama's DNC speech?

We got caught up by McCain's VP candidate (seriously, I never heard her name before today... all I knew beforehand was that there was a woman running the state of Alaska) announcement that I forgot to ask about Obama's speech last night?

How did you like it? To me, it was certainly among the most moving speeches given in recent memory. Obviously the rhetoric was so powerful that one can't help but wonder how much can and will be put into practice. Nevertheless, I think he beat my expectations for how well he pulled it off and came up with some good swipes at McCain (particularly how McCain votes with Bush 90% of the time and only believes in 10% change) too.

It will be interesting to see what McCain can pull of for his own acceptance speech next week...

Yeah, he said a ton of things people want to hear....but in reality these are things that will have to be taken care of sooner or later or this country will implode on itself and I'd rather a Democrat than a Republican make those promises.

His articulation and his connection with the crowd was promising. He never looked like he was reading and he didn't stutter nor lose his composure.

It's about time America had the chance to hear someone say something without sounding like a drunk 3rd grader from the swamps of Alabama

weak rhetoric and faux change wrapped in misplaced brevado. if you're on that bandwagon, we're fucked like there's nothin' better 'cause you just don't know.

ps believe me, i wish i could be on the bandwagon with the first african american as president. that's all the change most people seem to want which is great but it contradicts the very notion of freedom from slavery while the federal reserve is kept private, hemp's illegal, and bushco is still running around like they didn't just kill and destablize millions of people for no good reason, etc etc etc. he's not up for the real deal. he's too imbedded in the bullshit zeitgeist spouting whatever people want to hear. why can't you tell. people trading their souls for whatever the media tells them.

I do understand exactly what your saying about past and current events with the Bush administration. As far as profiling Barack as black I guess millions of people will never get over that fact. Having his nomination acceptance speech on MLK's "I have dream anniversary" was actually sort of creepy to me. But the site and dates were picked 1/11/07 and at that time Hillary and Edwards were the most bally-hooed.

Sure he's black, the change seems insurmountable, yet what he is saying is we can become part of this process, 38 million people tuned in to see the speech. I'm pretty sure it's not all as gloomy and cynical as you perceive this to be, I would of enjoyed an acceptance speech from a homeless shelter more but I have a punk mentality. I know I have a punk mentality and that is why I know I'm not running for political office. My thoughts and political knowledge does not represent the majority of Americans.

Fully knowing this I'm a realist and I understand the reality of exclusive and inclusive, which is how I view the differences between one of two candidates who will win this presidential election.

BTW the speech was 15 minutes too long. He had a lot to say and a great emotional center, which needed a funny break within two minutes (never came just blah, blah, blah) then his ending came which was anti-climatic because of the pacing. I give it a 6 out of 10 for Obama. I give it an 10 out of 10 compared to Gore or Kerry. I give it a 20 out of 10 compared to Bush.

Gore, Kerry, and Bush aren't running though, so I'm not sure why that would matter?

I'll never understand why people get so excited over someone's public speaking skills? I really don't see how that translates to making someone a good candidate for anything? I could give a fuck about a speech, actions speak louder than words.

You want to know what I think is Punk,...McCain telling the VC to go fuck themselves when they offered to free him, that he wasn't leaving Hanoi until everyone who was captured before him left, withstanding daily beatings that have left him disabled to this day.
Now that's funking Punk.

Yeah, that's experience you can count on. You honestly think that suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has no effect on his personality, temperament or judgment? From everything I've heard, the man loses his cool every chance possible. I don't want that kind of guy with his finger on the button, I want him getting help.

As far as Gore, Kerry and Bush not running, I'm using them as a criteria not a challenge, he is a better speaker than any of the past candidates the democrats have had. If he mumbled we would wonder WTF he's talking about.

Hey the other guy bills himself as the straight talk express, so apparently he's even more obsessed with speech that Obama.

John McCain's POW Hanoi Hilton story is one of the most amazing stories of American bravery in the past 50 years, he shares this story with James Stockdale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Stockdale), Bud Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud_Day), Joseph Kittinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger), Brigadier General Robbie Risner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_Risner) and hundreds of others were held there also. These men and hundreds of others captured represented this country through one of it's most turbulent times as true patriots and returned with honor. They are of the thousand's who sacrificed during Vietnam,

US Soldiers serving in Vietnam 8,744,000

US Soldiers KIA in Vietnam 58,217

US Soldiers Wounded in Vietnam 153,452

US Soldiers Missing in Action Vietnam 1,947

I obsessed with the Vietnam War to an unhealthy degree, I work with vets and my family served. I wouldn't call that punk rock I would call it honorable. He along with hundreds of other POW's returned with Honor.

Why is it the Republicans nominated George W. Bush instead?

Now if McCain went down to the Emergency FoodShelf Network in New Hope and gave his nomination acceptance speech with minimum glitz and maximum donations, I would vote for him.

Interesting aspect of how Hurricane Gustav arrives as this convention begins. An odd coincidence. (http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/5180/bartcopkatrinacakeow5.jpg)

Well, see you only say that because you're young and don't have life experience. No one over 35 is voting Obama, apparently. I should probably inform my parents, they never got that notice.

I guess the 1960s were right, don't trust anyone over 30. Except they're WAY over 30 now. ;)
