Bush and Cheney are skipping out to be at the Gulf Coast. McCain and Palin may even be absent in the early stages of the convention too.

Bush to Skip Convention as Gustav Scuppers Republican Plans

Hurricane Gustav has thrown plans for the Republican National Convention into disarray this weekend with the party keen to wipe out memories of President Bush's botched handling of Katrina, which hit land almost exactly three years ago.

The White House announced today that Mr Bush will not address the convention in Minneapolis St Paul as scheduled on Monday night as he would be touring the Gulf Coast. Dick Cheney, his Vice President, will be at his side.

John McCain and his new running mate Sarah Palin could also be absent from the early stages of the convention, as will be four Republican governors whose states are in the firing line of Gustav. Mr McCain, along with his wife, Cindy, and Mrs Palin will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday.

Republican officials are hastily working on contingency plans that could see the gathering turned into a telethon to raise money should there be a repeat of the catastrophic scenes witnessed when Hurricane Katrina cut a swath through New Orleans, bursting the levees and killing hundreds of people.

"You know, it just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster. So we're monitoring it from day to day," Mr McCain told Fox News.

Barack Obama, touring the northeast of the US, made a direct connection between Gustav and Katrina, saying that he hoped the preparations were more thorough than those in 2005. "It wasn't last time and hopefully we've learnt from that tragedy," he said.

With Mr Bush absent from the convention, it would fall to his wife Laura to make a more substantial address, with the President speaking via satellite. "The President and Vice-President decided not to travel to Minnesota due to the hurricane," said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman.

Katrina marked one of the low points of Mr Bush's second term, with his administration criticised for the slow and disorganised response to the storm, which killed 1,800 people across several states. Ahead of Gustav's impact, Mr Bush pre-emptively declared states of emergency for Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama.

Yeah, they'd be fucked if they stayed and partied in Minnesota during a (potentially) disastrious hurricane.

Politically, this is the best thing for McCain. I really wanted to see Bush and Cheney heaping praise on McCain so everyone could see that these fuck-ups endorse and love McCain as one of their own. I know McCain didn't want that, but he felt obligated to say yes to having them there, party unity and all that shit. What a lucky guy that they're now unable to make it.

Either way, stuff I've been reading on CNN about Gustav:

"If I left, I'll probably lose my job," said Jeremiah O'Farrell, another dishwasher who is staying put.

"Really, how bad do you think it's gonna get?" he asked. "I've never been through one, and I'm not sure what to believe. You see the national weather people, and they're telling you it's gonna be really bad."

"Aw, it's gonna turn!"

This really bothers me. They said the same thing for Katrina, and 1,800 died in that storm. Losing your job > losing your life. I don't know how people can be SO tied down to their lives there that they'd rather die than leave. I'd rather be alive and jobless than employed and dead, but that's just me. Normally I'd agree and say that newscasters are jumping the gun and hyping it up, but I would never, EVER take any chances when it comes to New Orleans. It was wrecked before and can definitely be wrecked again. Seriously, you don't gamble on that shit.

Yeah what assholes, I had full scuba gear on searching for survivors every single day for at least a month when Katrina hit. When my rations had depleted I ate my left arm to sustain energy. With my body mangled and with the high chance of death due to blood loss I rode countless people on my back to dry land.
As I passed dead bodies floating in the swamps I couldnt help but think my fate would be the same. But my life was meaningless at this point. I was a human machine bent on saving as many lives as possible. After the hundredth or so person crawled off my human raft of a body, my will to continue diminished, I was physically and mentally depleted and I felt death slowly creeping up on me. I then crawled ontop of a pizza hut in New Orleans, accepting my fate. and as I layed there, welcoming death, I took solace in the fact that I made a difference in the bigger picture.
By some miracle I was found, mangled beyond recognition. I was in the hospital for months. They fitted me with a prosthetic arm. To this day I've suffered bouts of illness due to the virus' I contracted in the flooded streets..
But thats just me what did you do to help?

My mom and I saw a lot of evacuated people torn up over the fact that they had to leave their animals behind, so we went to the animal shelter and donated hand sanitizer, collars, bowls, kitty litter, litter pans, litter scoops, leashes, food, and other materials to help the SPCA help abandoned animals down there and bring some back to Maryland. It was really great to see some of the people reunited with their beloved pets, after they had thought they lost them forever. As terrible as Katrina was, you still did get to see the best in people coming together and trying to help their fellow man. (y)

I just really don't want to see it happen again. I've heard stories of people being 'too broke to leave.' Not having the money or resources to leave, not being able to leave their jobs, whatever else. It's just sad.

All things dull and ugly,
All creatures short and squat,
All things rude and nasty,
The Lord God made the lot.

Each little snake that poisons,
Each little wasp that stings,
He made their brutish venom,
He made their horrid wings.

All things sick and cancerous,
All evil great and small,
All things foul and dangerous,
The Lord God made them all.

Each nasty little hornet,
Each beastly little squid,
Who made the spiky urchin?
Who made the sharks? He did.

All things scabbed and ulcerous,
All pox both great and small,
Putrid, foul and gangrenous,
The Lord God made them all.

Amen.
