here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB7BIuhfrbg&feature=related)
or here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2_ROO_hGcY) (these could theoretically all just be 60's bands doing this song, as they all did!)
and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q07NJgAdytA)
went so mainstream on purpose as basically ALL rock is heavily influenced by r&b- can always dig deeper. Enjoy diggin'
:)

what im looking for is shit that's like early Stones when they did more stuff that was more straight R&B.
creedence's version of i put a spell on you is another good example.
fast paced, slow paced, it doesn't really matter but i would slightly prefer shit a bit more up tempo and that old raunchy guitar sound.

also stuff that's more traditional R&B would be good too.

Early early Bob Seger (Mongrel, Smokin' OP's, Seven).
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes' first three albums. Not exactly Stones-like, because they had R&B down way better.
You'd probably dig NRBQ.

i think what im basically asking for is rock that's pre 1968/69 that isn't all cheesey and corny.
i think the oldest shit i have in my collection is creedence, cream and the yardbirds.

Ah.
Well, you can't go wrong with a Chuck Berry greatest hits collection. And some Little Walter.
It's as much blues and R&B, but you really really really need that Howlin' Wolf twofer that has the riocking chair album and Moanin' at Midnight
on it. Hubert Sumlin's guitar will tear your head off, and it's no coincidence that when the Stones did their TV show, they literally sat at the
Wolf's feet during his spot.
And it's a little later than you're asking for (circa 1972), but you should snag Little Feat's Dixie Chicken. An R&B masterpiece. That band
can fucking play, and Lowell can sing rings around Mick.

Oh, yeah -- check out The Animals, too.

Flamin' Groovies.
Shit name, great music. There isn't much on youtube though - they had a late 70s/1980s period which was rubbish. Look out for Teenage Head (1971) and Flamingo (1970). Teenage Head was the album that Keith Richards wished the Stones had made instead of Sticky Fingers (his words not mine). They do a few covers of rocknroll standards too.

There are some sound clips, too.

Blasphemy.
anyway, now you're in my wheelhouse,...
Early Who stuff like "The Who sings My Generation" and "A Quick One", MC5, The Chambers Brothers, Chuck Berry, Eric Burdon, The Troggs, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers(Clapton's next band after the Yardbirds), Janis Joplin, The Guess Who, Canned Heat, Donovan Frankenreiter, Humble Pie, Iron Butterfly, Sam Sham & the Pharaohs, Vanilla Fudge.
But nobody comes close to the Stones in that era in my book.
this is good too
Glad you like it. Seriously there is nothing else on youtube from them. Try and download anything from those two albums, all the other stuff on youtube is from when they reformed with a new singer and some shitty songs. The albums now come with all sorts of bonus tracks which are covers of rocknroll standards eg Louie Louie and Shakin' all over.

the early The Who stuff is really hit and miss to me. most of it i don't like but there's a handful of really stand out tracks. i couldn't get into MC5. i already have joplin, and frampton era humble pie. i'll take a look at the rest.

what about small faces?
regular-sized faces are better, 'specially if you're a big stones fan.
get "a nod is as good as a wink..." if you like that, early rod stewart is pretty much the same thing* (i.e. "every picture tells a story")
*nitpickers need not apply

Small Faces, Early Steve Miller Band, Humble Pie, Fleetwood Mac Kiln House, Cream, Mountain, Jimi Hendrix, Yardbirds, Zombies and then there's the pure uncut dose of Sly and the Family Stone or James Brown or Stevie Wonder.
There is some fucking great music out there.

Man, if you can snag that Faces boxed set, you're gold. Their albums could be kind of uneven, but if you want just one, go with A Wink
is As Good as a Nod...

erm..nothing, nevermind.
Well, now that I messed this up maybe I should recommend something anyway... moby grape's first album,
people call it psych but it's actually just good ol' r&b-tinged sixties rock.

60s surf music is pretty cool if you dig guitar stuff. They borrowed from 50s rock and roll, like Duane Eddie, and made their own sound.
The Chantays
The Ventures
The Sufaris
Dick Dale
Etc.
There's a video of Dick Dale and the Deltones performing Miserlou on youtube. Perhaps the most surreal performance I've ever seen. The band are all swaying steadily with fixed grins on their faces whilst Dick Dale is shredding away at the front. The audience is then pretty much static apart from one chick who's going at it hammer and tongs. Combined with the pretty harcore music it makes it very trippy.

Pity the Blackeyed Peas shouted over the top of it.
