If I had to pick right now without any more research I'd pick Ventura, CA because I have a friend who lives near there, and I've never lived in CA. I guess it depends -- am I going to make the same income in all of those cities? It would be expensive to live in Chicago or the LA area.
I'd like to know more about Casper, WY. It's been over 20 years since I was there.
Beaverton, OR -- I have family near there, so that has to come off my list, but it is a lovely area.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Ooh, this is difficult. I've always wanted to live in the NE.

I don't know much about any of those places other than Chicago. I think though that I wouldn't mind living in Chicago for a bit. For example if mr.p got a two-year contract offer there or something, I would be willing to give it serious consideration.

yeah I guess I should give some more background. I've been accepted to be a recruiter for the Air Force and that is the list of cities I have to choose from to go live for 4 years. Initially I was going with Cinci, Chicago, and Springfield cus I'm from OH and wanted to be close to home again. But I figured I owed it to myself to at least check out some other places....
I have never lived in CA but it seems very nice but expensive. I'll be making roughly the same salary wherever I go, in the neighborhood of 45-50k, the only thing that will really change is the money they give me for housing but that is based off the location and the local cost of living.
Oh yeah in my spare time I goof off on line like here, ride my bike, go running/work out, go to school, and watch sports...so umm yeah

Well Rob I have been all over Europe and Asia, not to mention a few tours in the middle east plus two stateside assignments....so this really isn't a "see the world" type career move. Initially I applied for 2 reasons, to get the hell out of Louisiana and to get closer to home. Either way I'm leaving LA so that's good and being closer to home isn't as high of a priority as it used to be because originally when I said close I meant like my home town or close enough that I could drive there after work....but nothing in Cleveland was available so now I'm not too worried bout it.

Yeah it's a complicated mess actually....I got promoted a few months back but my current career field has an overage in that rank so they are asking (then forcing) the most junior Technical Sergeants to cross train into another job...I didn't want any of the other jobs and since recruiting was already something I was considering I decided to go for it. however since I am in danger of being forced to cross train I need to act quickly...hence I only get to pick from places that need immediate help and not the full spectrum that I would normally get to. Ugh...

Azusa CA - no, yuck
Ventura CA - yessss, beach ... and it is half way between santa barbara and Los Angeles
Bristol CT - no, boring
Manchester CT - no, boring
Chicago IL - I love Chicago
Colombia MO - blah
Red Bank NJ - New Jersey sucks
Farmington NM - no, hot
Freeport NY - blah
Cincinnati OH - eh, no
Springfield OH - eh, no
Beaverton OR - I love Portland and the Oregon coast ... this one is a maybe
Williston VT - Very Pretty, yet boring
Parkersburg WV - no
Casper WY - Yellowstone was dope, but Casper was a hick town. so, no!
After my extensive road trip, these are my two cents.
I have two friends that are working in Ventura right now after traveling all over the world from different stations in the military, and they are really happy there.
You will be near the Ocean and mountains in Ventura ...
45 minutes from LA, and 15 minutes from Santa Barbara.
LA has it's bad side = the people ....
but there's tons and tons for stuff to do here.

im convinced.
i grew up in the town next to bristol, CT but sadly i don't know much about it. i know we had a rivalry with their high school. and ESPN is there! at least it was when i was there, it might have moved. it's across the street from a mcdonald's. i went there once on a field trip (ESPN, not mcdonald's) but i didn't get to see anything or meet anyone. it was a pretty lame field trip.
i guess it's a pretty boring quiet place. not much to do, but an ok place to raise a family
i don't know anything about manchester. i didn't even know we had a manchester

cincinnati, oh is pretty cool i guess. i've only been there a few times and it seemed alright.
i would probably pick chicago.

I know Springfield is boring...I have driven through there dozens of times but never really stopped. It makes the list because it's 2.5 hours from my house, 1 hour from Columbus, and like half hour from Wright Patterson which was my first assignment way back when...Anyway after hours of research here is what I have narrowed it down to. Oh I should mention that I need to submit a list of 3 choices...
Ventura Ca
Bristol CT
Chicago IL

If you work in Chicago, would you be right downtown or out in the suburbs? I think it would be expensive to live in the Chicago area if you have to work right downtown, even though I love that city. Where are our Chicago board members now???
Beaverton OR might fit the things you like to do in your spare time pretty well. It's a lovely area of the country. And it's a suburb of Portland. Good bands play in Portland.
Ventura also has the nice outdoor activities and the access to good live music.
I have no idea why you would pick the middle of Missouri. I couldn't stand it when my grandma lived down there. :p

I've been in the Chicagoland area for 10 years. Been in the burbs the whole time. When I first moved here I worked in the city and took the train everyday. You live and die by the train schedule. Living in the burbs is perfect for my family lifestyle.
The city is close enough to take advantage of everything but far enough away to not deal with the negatives of a big city.
You can definitely get more house for your $ in the burbs. But it all depends what's important to you.
Bristol is a city located in Hartford County, Connecticut, USA, 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Hartford. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 61,353.[1] Bristol is primarily known as the home of ESPN, whose central studios are in the town. Bristol was also known as a clock-making town in the 1800s, and still boasts the American Clock and Watch Museum. Bristol's nicknames include the Bell City, because of a history manufacturing innovative spring-driven doorbells, and the Mum City because it was once a leader in chrysanthemum production and still holds an annual "Mum Festival".
bristol is boring i'd cross it off
unless you're looking for boring (and safe, i think), then bristol's for you!
and if you ever get sick of the mum festival, you can just cross the border to southington, ct (where i grew up) to the lovely apple harverst festival, and eat apple fritters. it's quite the spectacle. i think they even have a ferris wheel

i'm moving to the luvverly south west because i am starting a new job in october! it's at a sort of big arts cinema (with a bar/cafe/event space etc etc) at the harbourside.

No way, I had lunch at that place when I went to see the uni! It's pretty cool, the whole arts scene and the harbourside were a big reason for me going there. I applied like a year ago, have been on a gap year so I'm moving into my halls on the 20th. Should be cool, I'm sure I'll see you at some point if you're gonna be working with the customers and shit.

you really kept that quiet that you were going to university! or maybe i am just stupid.
i'm sure you'll see me around. i'm not front of house staff or anything though. i'm the deputy communications manager so i'm mostly behind the scenes. i do however get free cinema tickets and cut price food and drink off said bar/cafe so give us a buzz if you are too broke to afford organic ales with gourmet burgers n shit ;)
