Another example of the uber-rich wanting to suck off the tits of the American People and sadly the will get it.
http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/daily-news/080908-Auto-Industry-Asks-Congress-for-50-Billion-Insists-This-Isn-t-a-Bailout/
The Big Three Detroit automakers have begun lobbying Congress for up to $50 billion in loans that would help them adjust to a market that demands more fuel-efficient vehicles. But the automakers insist the loans would not amount to a government bailout of the struggling auto industry.
These companies were so totally absorbed in their SUV craze they didn't even bother to look to the future, their development of new technologies to continue consumer interest failed them.
Interest in fuel efficiency is not a new concept. But sadly the rich had to have their gas guzzlers supposedly increasing demand and eventually gas prices, fucking over the mediocre drivers on their way to fill up their Tank's gas tank.
The U.S. auto industry has fucked over the environment, their workers, and the consumer by making poorly rated vehicles when it comes to fuel...why should anyone bail them out?

Why not bail them out.. Bail out Freddie, Bail out Fannie, bail out everyone. Who cares about responsibility or accountability. This shit is out of hand. America needs to shake itself, take the spanking and get it over with. That's the only way these companies are going to learn.
On the other hand wouldn't these loans qualify as "investing in alternative fuels"? Will be interesting to see how the candidates spin this one.

I would say they had their chance to make change but they killed the electric car, didn't pay close attention to their foreign competitors and the type of markets urbanization created and went with the Hummer, Denali, the 300, and countless other gas guzzling behemoths
They are reaping what they sowed. I have a midsize car that is paid off and I plan on having it for years. My next car will be smaller and used.
The market is completely saturated and foreign development is far out-pacing american standards! Obviously the commuter car is evolving and becoming more in-tune to population growth.
More pollution comes from the making of the car compared to the whole life of the car. Buy used, buy within your means, and buy what's efficient and suitable to your driving environment.
Edit: And no...I don't think I should bail out these car companies, I don't own "American" and I never owned an SUV.
All the SUV owners should bail these losers out instead of getting tax breaks on their Hummer purchases, wtf!

Lee Iacocca (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Iacocca#Career_at_Chrysler) did this with Chrysler a few decades ago, it was cheesy and quite controversial, but the government had been bailing out airlines and railroads so WTF they took a gamble. He actually paid us back seven years early. I do not know if we have anybody as sharp as Lee working for the Big 3 today.
How does one miss Toyota's gigantic profits selling hybrids and small SUV's? They've been doing it for years, the small SUV's for over a decade. Big, Giant profits!!! And starting 2010 the Prius will be built right here in Blue Springs, Mississippi USA!
How does ignorance get rewarded? Will they guarantee a living wage for US citizens? Will they tool up using US labor? That's our money, the US taxpayer they want to tap. What is in it for us?

Lee Iacocca is still chugging along at age 83, he reminds me of my grandpa, same age as Lee with many of the same thoughts and a WWII vet. I love this excerpt from his latest book (http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/05/08/1056/), Where Have All the Leaders Gone
Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."
Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!
My Grandpa bought a toyota prius 6 years ago and would never support a republican after living in Ronald Reagan's California.
